hmm.. my i5 runs WoW fine. I'm not sure what people consider low frame rates, as I'm not a hardcore gamer.. but I've been receiving 60fps on max settings at native res?? However, before I updated to 3.3 I tried max settings and the screen went blank (no picture) and I couldn't restore the settings.

I have the same performance on my 27" C2D at native res, but I have shadows turned all the way down.
 
Just a quick comment: the patch runs fine on my old PowerMac, see my signature. Also, it has a 6800 vid card.

What, exactly, is Blizzard doing in the new patch that is breaking WoW for some people? Did Blizz add OpenGL or take it away?

Perhaps it is a dumb question but I work in CAD/CAM/CAE which relies heavily on strict OpenGL standards and implementation. Not trying to upset the gaming crowd but one of the numerous differences between gaming cards and workstation cards is how OpenGL is used. Let's just say that gaming card do not exactly have a stellar reputation when it comes to OpenGL standards.

Let's see it this way, how many people have Macs vs PC, 5-6%? How many of those play games on their Mac, 5%? How many of those are eventually playing WOW, 5-10%? Like potentially 0.0125 person per 100 Mac owners potentially playing WOW. So you need 8000 Mac owners to have one playing WOW.

Even if on Windows the WOW player base percentage is not greater, the machine count is 19 times bigger, so potentially for PC you may have 19 WOW players vs 1 on the Mac (and I am sure the ratio is a lot bigger than that).

Now, knowing how money greedy Activision is, you can imagine that developers spend a lot more resources on developing Windows WOW vs Mac WOW. Plus for sure most resources are currently oriented towards developing new games vs maintaining old ones.

I'm not saying that the Mac WOW developers are not dedicated to their work, just that they are not given the resources to do a good job.

Just look at the fact that Call of Duty WAW 2 is not even released on the Mac yet, that proves how much general interest there is for investing in Mac gaming.

With Windows and console gaming, MS and hardware manufacturers give $$$ to help develop the games to support their own sales, I don't think Apple is helping out any gaming studio with $$$ right now. They are interested in gaming on iPod and iPhone.

If you go into windowed mode (<command>m) with the old OpenGL engine the middle yellow button in the upper left corner of the window is grayed out, with the new OpenGL engine it's yellow and functional. I think this means the old one was written in Carbon and the new in Cocoa.
 
From my experience the performance difference of WOW between Windows and OSX is abyssmal. Do yourself a favor, play WOW in bootcamp and get the full performance and eye candy. I doubt that OpenGL WOW will ever be much more than an half-assed job.

That's interesting – I've done some non-scientific tests by running WoW on a MacBook Pro (2.5 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia 8600 graphics with 512 MB VRAM) in both Windows and Mac OS X. To me the performance was about the same in both OS's.

I also did a performance test on a Hackintosh (Core i7 2.66 GHz, 6 GB RAM, ATI 4890 graphics with 1 GB RAM) and performance was about the same there too (Leopard vs. Windows 7 RC 1).

The MacBook Pro test was done about a year ago and the Hackintosh test maybe 6 months ago.
 
ive been having issues with my mac pro and wow .. i recently got a 4870 apple card and i get kernal panics all the time .. it just hard locks and i have to power down .. apple suggested it might be a bad card and i exchanged it and i just got another kernal panic .. this is getting beyond annoying .. and i have no idea what the problem is .. any ideas ?
 
Not sure if this helps you, but let me add the following:

I used to play WoW fine on my Mac Pro with 4870 until 3.2 - then I quit because I lost interest after 4 years. Never had issues or hiccups with my configuration.

When 3.3 came out, I took a look at WoW again and I noticed that I get weird distortions when launching the game, like a garbled screen with artifacts, sometimes it would even display for a second or two the last frame of a previous game I played and finally I got some Kernel Panics, but rather rarely.

Anyway, I switched last week to a GTX 285 because I needed more graphics RAM for different applications (and games on Windows) and I noticed that all the strange artifacts are gone when launching WoW, also no more hiccups and the Kernel Panics are gone.


Just my little story on this :p

Actually, in September last year, about 10% of WoW players were Mac users, and that number was constantly growing.
