But for some other things, it (a Mac) has gaps. Gaps that don't exist in the Windows environtment - when compared against PC "entertainment class" machine. Something I learned over time....

Absolutely!! How I miss the regular thrills on a Windows machine, like malware, viruses, trojans, the "uninstall programs", the ever-growing registry etc, etc!

Happy days.... :D

I guess this is more a rant then a real post, but you will soon understand. I was a diehard PC fan for 20 years, last year about this time; I was given a brand iMac 27" from a friend for work I did for him..... Guess I was scared, for the unknown; but, quickly I was was totally blown away..... And still to this day, I am impressed more and more day to day with Apple and the Mac's...... OMG, I think I LOVE this thing more today then the day I got it; I dont worry about it becoming out-dated, because it is years ahead of PC based machines. Sorry PC gang, but you guys are living in the dark age; Mac is years ahead....

I ordered a MBP today, I guess I am building my loyality to a company that is years ahead of everyone else.... LOVE ME SOME MAC!!!!!! But me LOVE my iMAC best, I have to keep my loyality to my SWEET baby!!!!!

I have a 27" I5 machine myself, and they are great.

I wouldn't go so far as saying they're years ahead of PC's though. The CPU's in them are at least a year behind upon release, and that's being generous. They use slow Ram, compared to the higher speed DDR 3 you can get with a Desktop PC. The video cards in them are at least a year outdated when they release them.

The displays are amazing, unless you're like me and have a yellow tint problem making it hard to white balance photos on the bottom half of the screen.

The limitations above are what really cause some of the positives to shine with the MAC. Using older proven hardware, and limiting the amount of differing hardware is going to have the affect of a more stable system, so its a trade off, one I decided to make. Windows has to account for an incredible amount of different hardware, and an incredible amount of different quality of drivers being produced for their systems.

Keep loving your Mac I do, but know the advantages and disadvantages of each system so you're not blindly following anyone.

If you spend $2k on a windows system, you will have a much faster running system, for pretty much everything. For that price you could have an i7-950, 3 5770 video cards, 12 GB ram, yada yada. This processor alone won't happen on an Imac for at least another year.

That being said, it would not be as stable or easy to use as your Mac, and that's why I have chose Mac for now.

I forgot to add that to my previous post for the advantages of a Mac, lack of viruses.

I personally have been on PC's for years, and been affected by 1 virus, and I don't use any Virus protection. My wife, however, was constantly getting them until I bought her a Macbook, now she doesn't.

She has a friend who was literally getting viruses on a weekly basis, which I was cleaning for them. They just bought a new computer, hoping this would help . They have already got a new virus after a month. I suggested they buy a Mac, but they instead wanted to save the $300 and buy a Dell. These people need a Mac, if anyone does.

Dont' tell her I said this :), but unless you're extremely careless it's pretty hard to get a virus in my experience. But for the people who fit above, a Mac is great.

MonkeySee...

Luckily, I'm not brand specific in anything. Ford, GM, Dodge, improrts? Luckily, I drive different brands and realize that each have their pros/cons. Same with computers. Windows has some great features and Mac has some great features as well.

As a suggestion, make a columized list of different tasks (that you do with a computer tool). For example, Photos - display and editing, Movies - display and editing, Music - play and edit, CD burning, DVD burning, DVD to File Converting, watching Movies, Downloading movies, Print, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Presenations, Email, Web Caming, "ease of reading", etc. etc. Within this page, make MAC, Windows and "comments" columns, For each matrix, apply a 1-10 score. 10 Being the highest. Now... Perform your own review - for what you do with a computer. When completed, overlay that with cost. My current iMac costs 3 x more (yes, 3 times more after taxes) compared to my current Windows system. For what I do (re: mostly internet surfing, internet forums and email), I find my Windows "entertainment class" machine much better then our new iMac - from a grand total column comparison score. For photos and iTunes, our new iMac blows our Windows machine out of the water. But for other things, our Windows machine is much better.

Like a glove, one size doesn't fit all. And, Windows or iMac does NOT "fit all" either. It all depends on the specific tasks the "tool" (computer or vehicle) is used for....

Good luck on your new iMac. Like many, I also hope that Apple Corp fixes "more feature gaps" with their future Mac OS releases. Especially since their systems cost 3 times more then a Windows machine. To me, Apple should make their iMac 3 times "better" - which I know they can... .

Sorry that wasn't specifically aimed at you but i'll respond anyway.

I'm into my photography and Windows is the bane (sp?) of my life.

I have a Quad PC and i know the Mac wont multitask as well as the PC but i also know it will fit to my requirements alot better.

The only reason i say i'm going to rub his face in it (and i wouldn't normally) but he goes out of his way to critisise my phone (iphone) and tell how overpriced MACS are and how much he hates Apple blah blah blah.

I see this MAC as an investement and try not to think about the outright cost. :)

I will let you know how i get on though.

I've yet to get nailed from a Virus. Then again, I practice "safe computing", don't click on FREE stuff and don't open attachments from folks I don't know. I also use MS Essentations instead of "CPU HOG" Norton.

For Virus protection checklist cell, sounds like you enter a 10 score for your iMac. If you need to connect / play BluRay DVDs "clean and simple", what would your scrore be then? A little "0" or perhaps a "1" - since you have to add 3rd party H/W to your iMac? How about headaches from 27" inch models because their font / menus sizes cannot changed "without" distortion. Read the threads - there is a few folks who are getting headaches because Apple fails to resolve "their gaps".

I love the folks who get onto forums and feel their MAC, Windows or xxx vehicle is perfect. The "just buy, plug it in and it works" attitude folks. Tunnel vision folks who purposely don't want to see gaps (lack of features or lack of ease of use - that can be done). For these folks, I feel sorry for them... Luckily, I can see both Pros and Cons in either platform. And because of this, I can honestly say, "apple can be much better. Especially since their product costs 3 times more".... At 3 times more cost, I expect their product to be 3 times better in ALL scoring cells....

sorry to spam this thread but why doesn't this thread, or any thread i post in show up in my User CP??

Any help would be good as i don't know where the hell i've posted at the moment. haha

Interesting... Read my post again. I said Macs is better for pictures. Did NOT mention your iPhone and I didn't say I hated apple. Please... Slow down and read what I wrote. I said Apple's iMac (Mac OS) has feature gaps. I stated where and stated how they can fix it. And, hoping they fix it with future releases. Please read my upper posts again. If you feel Apple does NOT have "gaps" to my items, please tell me their native "resoltuon". NO - I don't want to hear about 3rd party solutions. I want to hear about Apple "included / supported" soutions - to my stated feature / ease of use gaps.

Spike, I'm not talking about you. I'm talking about a guy i work with. :D

Sadly most macs never seem to die and run like "new" forever. Which is killing my reasons to buy a new one.

I have the same issue, my BMB with 6GB of Ram, and speedy new HDD is fast, it runs lid closed, powering my Dell ultrasharp 24' monitor. I am using my Bluetooth keyboard, Magic track pad and Magic mouse for input.
I just LOVE this system and set up!

Thats ok. Your post was helpful and it will be interesting to see what tops what. I think Windows 7 Is a good OS i'm just looking forward to OSX.

Like you, I too was tired of Win xx systems and their gaps. And since my one kid will be attending future university, he'll need a future laptop. Who am I to tell him what specific machine to get? Thus, we run both Windows and Macs within my home. Each of my kids use both and when my kids do attend future college / university, each of them gets to pick which OS is better (for their studies and environement). re: Will each of them pick Mac OS or Win 7 platform? It will be "their call" - based on theiur current usage (and gap awareness) within each platform they are using today.

Now that our mid 2010 iMac intial "WOW feeling" is over, we're starting to see gaps (areas that can be improved) in Apple's specific OS. In time, I'm sure you too will start to realize that Apple "can do better" in certain areas / features as well. But... Only after your WOW factor has settle down as well...

Where did you get the idea that Apple computers cost three times more than an equivalent PC? If a PC costs 3 times less than a similarly equipped Mac then you do not want to buy that PC. Anything that cheap is going to be crap.

In my country, iMac mid model = $1799 + 13% taxes. Same Windows system = $650 + 13% taxes. Do the math and remember to include "after taxes" totals. And yes, same Intel processor, same CD/DVD, same 4 GB Ram, etc. etc.

For 2 times "before taxes" and 3 times "after taxes", I expect my iMac to blow any Windows OS system away. Blow it away in all features and user controls... Just to name a few features that iMac lacks.. Global Font settings (without text / screen distortion), native BluRay, auto dismounting of removed USB items, iSight camera with adjustable settings, faster Internet downloads, sound volume controls in multiple locations, etc. etc. If Apple has these features in my iMac, please advise where I can find these controls. As I say to many, don't dismiss these gaps. Why not focus on these gaps - so Apple will put more focus into resolving them - in their future patches or Mac OS releases... If wondering, I'm not bashing the iMac. Just pointing out "they are NOT perfect - Apple Corp can do much better"!!!!

In my country when your cheap PC breaks or gets a Virus I give you big bill to fix + 5% taxes. And then after you paid me I laugh, cause you should have bought a Mac

You know this brings up something else I'd like to weigh in on. Maybe I have a bizarre way of looking at the web experience (and maybe my age is showing), but I have this expectation that (as long as I'm not downloading pirated anything via torrents or whatever, or being stupid on porn sites), my web-browsing experience should be fear-free. I should be able to bounce from site to site, digging deep into links here and there, exploring the web, without having to stop and wonder if I might cause irreparable damage to my computer.

The Mac has ALWAYS given me the experience closest to that ideal. That's why I've only spent my own hard-earned money on Macs since 1994.

Now that Limewire has been shut down, I have to wonder what the Geek Squad and the like will do to survive when it comes to virus removal.

Well, I guess there's always Facebook.

Extremely careless is an understatement! I bet there is pr0n involved.

If you can really get the same hardware as the mid level iMac, monitor, and graphics chip for $650 plus tax then you should look into selling them to other countries. I can't get that price in the USA.

See? There's always someone waiting in the wings to ruin the web experience for us!

Oh? Do you not enjoy it?
You can search by file type, which can make downloading safer

Pc viruses come in through java and adobe exploits

He is probably complaining about the same thing that all of us old guys complain about: the ability to alter dpi to suit older eyes.

We'd like to be able to have the benefits of our brilliant ultra high resolution screens, but we need a Windows-like "Large Fonts" option (+125%, +150%) to be able to read what the text while enjoying the brilliant images.

Changing resolutions doesn't work because then we lose the brilliance of the native resolution.

Have you all seen the new extension "All Pages Zoom"? You set the font size on one site and it remains the same throughout other sites, and stays that way until you change it. It works fine for my old eyes.
