The past few days, I've been having issues sending and receiving texts. All would seem to be well, except people wouldn't be receiving some and vice versa. MMS also randomly started working at one point (Have a modified carrier file.) To test it wasn't my jailbroken phone causing problems, i switched SIM cards. I still had the same problem. I also went to "reset Network Settings." This re-disabled MMS, and it's still not working right.

So I decided to call AT&T. They said it would be a two minute wait. I waited nearly ten minutes before someone answered. I told her the situation. I was put on hold for five minutes to be told I'm being transferred to somebody else.

This guy has me send a text to 151 saying "Test." I got a response from AT&T saying my text messaging was working fine.

He doesn't know what to do now, so he wants me to KEEP A LOG of texts I send, who they're to, whether they get them or not, and vice versa.

What does he expect me to do? Call everybody I text to see if they received my messages and ask what they've sent me to see if I got them? This is ridiculous.

So... Since AT&T is no help, anybody have any advice to help me out? Thanks.

once again... you cant really complain about service if you have a jailbroken phone.... you broke the service agreement. They should have tolf you to go pound salt

I'm confused....

You installed modded/hacked carrier file...
Changed your network settings...
Jailbroke....
Swapped SIM cards in and out....

And somehow this is AT&T's fault?

Not trying to be argumentative, understand... I must be missing something.

The reason I switched to SIM card to another phone to test if any of the issues I was having had to do with the modifications I made on my iPhone. Seeing as I was having the same problem on the other phone, the problem couldn't have been caused my my phone being jailbroken/modified carrier file. Also, I RESET the network settings, I did not change them.

I agree. You are pretty much on your own once you mod the iPhone software/hardware.

But if I had the exact problem on a different, unmodified phone, how would it make a difference?

You didn't say you had this problem on two phones.... At least, I don't read that in your OP.

I see two main areas where the problem may lie -- there are probably others....

1) A change was made to your account, somewhere, somehow..
2) A change was written to your SIM.

Does the problem follow the SIM, from phone to phone?

Are there any other phones on your account? Can they text OK?

Logically, what do YOU expect AT&T to do?

If they can't tell when a txt you've sent hasn't been recieved, how else can the possibly troubleshoot this if you can't give them some specific date and times to look for on their end?!

Yes, I have the same problem on my old Nokia phone using the same SIM card.

I never changed the plan on my account either.

Restore the phone to out of the box status. get a new sim card. then send a sms.. if its still not working call AT&T. untill you do that..... It's user error, either by jailbreaking or changing the settings on the phone.

Entertain the possibility that your SIM has been altered, then. I don't know what would do that, but it's not unheard of. Contacts, for example, are routinely stored on SIMs. I'm speculating wildly, as I don't know, but I would think it possible that with all the modding you've done, something has been either written to (or deleted from) your SIM.

Try completely restoring your phone and setting it up as new. That will eliminate any conflicting and reset all settings. Fresh start.

Also, don't try carrier file hacks, as those end up screwing you up instead. Also, insert the correct SIM into the phone before you proceed to restore.

In that case, shouldn't AT&T have offered to get me a new SIM card if my current one was malfunctioning? The only things I've downloaded off of Cydia have been SBSettings and mAdvLock, and nobody else seems to be having these problems.

Seems to me they are troubleshooting it with you, in order to determine what the problem is.

And those two JB apps are specifically designed to alter the functioning of your phone, are they not?

It sounds like a bad SIM. Go to the at&t store and have them check it.

Mine went bad a year ago and it was giving me all sorts of weird, unexplainable problems. I went in, they checked tested it (which it failed) and gave me a new SIM. All of my problems went away.

Yes they do, but this should not affect the SIM card.

Yes, and JBing should bring about world peace.... it's a gamble. Kinda makes one understand why :apple: is so keen on keeping things under control...

There is no way to tell from remote. Take it in to AT&T. Myself, I'd DFU and factory restore first, just to avoid any devout AT&T-er from shouting "HEATHEN" and trying to burn your evilly JB phone at the stake.

The boys n girls at AT&T will sort out your problem. Bet you a beer it's the SIM card, too.

how do you know they don't affect your sim card? The program could store something on the card or could have burped while using the sim card. If you are on Macrumors looking for answers I take it you are not a iPhone programmer nor an electronics expert. Your venting and thats cool but if you search thru most issues here its because someone tried somethign goofy like a hack or mod or jailbroken. I would have had sympathy for you if it was a stock OS.

And it does sound like AT&T is working with you. They cant magically snap their fingers and you have a new sim card. If you go into a store they will gove you one for free. Try that.

Again

Restore back to original and start there.

Trouble shooting while Jailbroken is just asking for issues.

I'll probably bring it in tomorrow to AT&T. I'll put the SIM card in my old Nokia so they don't give me crap about jailbreaking. Thanks!

They know you have an iPhone, right? They will ask for your number, look up your account... and say, "where's your iPhone?"

Also, if you take a known good SIM, and insert it into an environment which might be responsible for eating the last SIM... and the new SIM gets gnawed on as well... what then?

Just something to consider.

Did you tell AT&T you've jailbroken? I'd imagine not, though it makes it harder to figure out what the problem is when they don't have all the info.

This is called "troubleshooting". It's how you solve problems. AT&T wants you to do this so they can eliminate variables in the situation and narrow it down to only a couple of things that could be causing the problem. That way they fix what is actually causing the problem.

If they just replace your phone or sim, it may or may not fix it for you, and regardless, they've done nothing to address what could be an underlying issue on their end. This doesn't help them figure out what caused it in the first place.

By taking the time to ask you for further info, they are working towards a REAL solution to your problem, and not just some band-aid solution. This is GOOD customer service, not bad.

First...just because you've remove your sim card and put it in an old nokia phone is not going to work. The reason why is because your Data Plan is still tied to the Iphone plan. Did you called and switch it to a non NON-Iphone Data plan to see if it will work????

SMS and MMS use data to send information...this happen to my friend's JB iphone....It's usually when you JB and install different apps and dashes that causes the issue...I know this and seen it first hand...that's why I'm going to wait...and keep mine stock....

You've JB your iphone and than blame someone because things didn't work right...don't you see the problem in that? It's like you just bought a car and try to put a turbo in your car....if you mess up it's your fault...Take ownership man....Why didn't you just call AT&T and said I JB my iphone and now my SMS and MMS doesn't work...maybe than they can have a better understand on your issue....think about that next time before you B....about something.....

My car just broke down wtf att thanks a lot

AT&T isn't great, but they get a lot of hate for no reason

You mean... take... personal responsibility??? That would be odd, strange, and unusual, wouldn't it?

Sadly, yes, it would, it seems... All too many of these iPhone threads are filled with various versions of "how can I get away with _______"...

So, guys, thanks for helping keep the price of my stuff and data plans high. Appreciate it.

My point was, what they asked me to do is nearly impossible. What do they expect me to do? Call everybody right after to text them to see if they received it? I send and receive hundreds of texts every day...
