Yeah i was thinking the same thing... it is mighty strange that it has been so quite the past few weeks...as in we have heard nothing... I really hope that this WWDC isnt going to be as dry as the new PowerMac Specs.

k here r what I believe to be the most probable products to come out of WWDC:
Higher Mem iPod Shuffles
Color iPod Screens accross the line
High end iPods to allow video playback of music vids

Powerbook upgrade, how much i dont know
ibook upgrade-which is badly needed

PowerMac- Same line but new higher end dual, dual-core processors
iMac-stay same
mac mini-upgraded video, 7200rpm HDs

New PDA? i think so, apple is popular with portables icluding laptops and ipods, and so they will likely come back to the PDA market with great success

My guess is that we will see notebook updates as well as a new high end macs (Xstations as some call it)... Anyway I wouldnt be surprised at all if Apple introduced a new line of portables and/or workstations... Powermac name is almost 10 years old...
...and we will probably see some iPod upgrades

I agree. It's not like Powerbooks were only updated yesterday. Plus that would stop the arguments of iBook being too close to the Powerbook.
bye yesterday u mean about 100 days ago

They'll introduce a new iBook form factor. :)

They won't do updates. Updates are a random Tuesday sort of thing. An update is not newsworthy. An iBook updated look is newsworthy. :)

I think they'll make the iBook widescreen. They'll also make the 12" Powerbook widescreen as well, but maybe a bit later, possibly in Paris in September when they introduce a new Powerbook with new processors and everything! :)

Processor War

I don't know but apple better get their shi* together with their future dual core processor considering Dell now has Dual Core Processors on the midrange desktops. And they released them without a big show. Why does Apple always have to wait to release a product at some big expo?

With WWDC only about a week away, any predictions as to what Steve will unveil?

My prediction: A top end PowerMac G5 running dual-core @ 2.5Ghz dual processors.

Also, new dual-core G4 PowerBooks shipping in the Fall.

How do I guess this will happen? Because Apple's home page has not changed in over a month since Tiger's debut, so you know it'll change soon. And they are saving the change for something BIG. Expect dual-core announcements within 10 days! I'm so excited. :D

Something is gonna be announced, something quite big. But where are any likely rumours? Unless Steve just wants to talk about the success of Tiger, update the retail side....
I think maybe:

1) Some kind of Airport Express two, perhaps a wireless 802.11g kinda tablet/remote (bonjour ready) so you can change playlists/control iTunes without having to go upstairs

2)An Update to various other accessories, maybe a scroll wheel mouse....

3)Mac front i doubt much, i would love to think a updated dual-core G4 Powerbook (Why the hell else would Freescale be developing them if not for Apple??!) because i will be buying one end of September.

Apart from that i don't think anything else, i don't think they will announce new iBooks till a month or so after WWDC in a quiet speed bump (or even after the Powerbook are updated), besides the iBooks won't get anything more than perhaps a 64mb gfx, 512 ram and maybe even 1.5 ghz G4's.

err, you know the powermacs were just updated?

as i have said many times before dual core g4 powerbooks are not going to happen, the G5 is the future and apple is not going to put the R&D into the redesign of the powerbook that a dual core g4 would require.

lancro have you ever though about posting half as much and thinking about what you post twice as much?

I'd love an Airport update with video streaming and the kind of TV interface Apple would nail. Or just a flat out set-top box that would play nice with Quicktime. Most of the other streamers available (D-Link, etc) are said to be either unreliable and poor quality, or incompatible with Macs.

So? They could add a top end model to the existing line-up. Apple sorta did that with the Rev. A PowerMac G5 1.8Ghz. They updated the single PM 1.8 to dual 1.8s within a few months of introduction.

The problem with adding a G5 is that the PowerBooks cannot accomodate more than 4GB of RAM. So having a 64-bit G5 is totally useless. Adding a dual-core G4 only needs a modest change in mobo design, something that would need to be completely overhauled for a G5. The G5 is the future, but the power and heat requirements make it very difficult. I see the dual-core G4 more as the next logical step.

addinga dual core g4 requires a new from scratch logic board, they are not drop in compatible with the 74xx, 74xx are about 360 pin and the 8416 is like 900 pin and has a completely different FSB (rapid IO) and PCI express, how would it look if the powerbooks had pci express before the powermacs did?

the 970MP will have pci express and a few other improvement they just updated the powermacs with the same logic board design, when teh 970MP comes the logic board will be revised with PCI-e and hopefully more space for HD's.

Exactly. With 1 GIG of DDR 2 RAM. Video card PCI-Xpress.

And I'm gonna buy it.

Hmmm. Does ANYONE(?) run a G5 with less than 4 GB of RAM? Oh wait ... um ... that's right ... EVERY G5 Mac in the lineup is configured with less than 4 GB ... err, 2 GB ... err, 1 GB of RAM. I guess that every G5 in Apple's lineup is TOTALLY USELESS then. Sheesh! Does the fact that a Powerbook only accomodates 4 GB of RAM (in the present, non-redesigned state) mean that the computer can't utilize the chip? 4 GB of RAM is not required for a G5 chip to function. If it was, I would think that every G5 shipped would come with 4 GB of RAM as a default configuration. No?!?!

Additionally, with the amount of R&D money that Apple spends, redesigning the Powerbook to support a G5 is something that has been in the works for years now. It's like with automobiles ... they are designing the future cars years before they are ever manufactured for shipment. It's not like they release a few generations of a computer and chip, and then say ... "hey ... let's NOW start redesigning computers to support the new and/or present top generation chips" and start thinking about the future. The design of new computers (desktops and laptops) coincides with the development of new chips. Many designs are tried, created, tested, and many are scrapped and/or redesigned before we as consumers ever see something in the stores.

Sometimes, I wonder where people come up with these comments!

Those are some good predictions, but allow me to elaborate on those with more detail.

Updates that would happen AT WWDC:

- New High End PowerMac - 3.0GHz
- New High End PowerBook - 1.8-2.0 17" PB
- Dropping of the "photo" brand and having the normal iPods with color screens, with possible video features. No higher capacity drives.

Updates that would happen DURING WWDC (as in between the 6-10, but won't be formerly announced at WWDC):

- Higher capacity shuffles - now 1GB for $99 and a 2GB for $149, with possibly higher battery life (15 hrs) and the rumored mini LCD screen (not likely on the last one).
- Speedbump iBook G4 update - now with a 32MB nVidia GeForce FX Go5200, 512MB RAM standard, and running at 1.33GHz (12") and 1.42GHz (14").

As far as a Mac mini update (being Apple's key hardware for attracting more Windows users to Mac), Apple would likely make it a big deal (aka will be announced at Macworld Sept); I could see it to have a 1.42GHz G4 across the board, a 32MB (or 64MB) nVidia GeForce FX Go5200, a 5400 RPM HD 40GB and 80GB, 512MB RAM standard (max 1GB), and maybe even that built-in iPod dock? (not likely that last one)

And Apple looks like its headed more towards the tablet market, than the PDA market. A tablet would likely be announced at Macworld Sept.

Somewhere out there
My Prediction ( tounge in cheek )

-New PowerMac with Dual Opteron
-New PowerBook Carbon Composite with AMD64 dual core
-Tiger IA-64
-Production Suite IA-64
-Radeon 9000 for all above mentioned machines.

-Mac Mini G5 with hotplate on top.

Max. :D  :D

Closer that you might expect!
I've speculated on this before, but I'll repeat it here, 'cause I'm surprised that noone else notices it. On Apple's website, in the hardware pages, there are only 3 product pages (or mini-sites, or whatever you call them) that are not updated after the release of Tiger - Powerbook, iBook, and Mac mini. Now, I know they all ship with Tiger and everithing, but their pages still say Panther (see under software "sub-page"). Mind you, I'm not talking about the store.

All this makes me suspicious of eventual updates to these products, which are the reason for the over a month delay of putting up new "mini-sites" that say Tiger.

Or I may be a loony conspiracy theorist! :p

I think

Most likely
-dropping the single 1.8 G5 and lowering the prices so the dual 2.0, which will match the old single 1.8. The PM lineup of 4 is too much. Not simple enough for apple.
This theory is simple and plausible.
But Steve could just drop a bomb and introduce three dual core G5's, with 16GB ram support with the same amount of slots just having the slots handle 2GB’s each and 512MB of Vram.

-lowering the price of the Mac mini line and adding a "good, better best" sequence
Best will have a 64mb video card, stock super drive and being slightly larger for 2 ram slots.

-upgraded iBooks, same video card as low end PB’s, better resolution.

-Airport express with 2 way communication, so you can plug in--iPod dock--external HD--or maybe the addition of fire wire.

:D
