I understand that, but as much as I love X-Plane I'm not getting a PC for it.

As there still are some rumours regarding a new Mac Pro, I'm holding off getting a maxxed out iMac 27". Once I'm sure no new Mac Pro is coming out, I will get the newest and fattest iMac... ;)

My good ol' 2008 Mac Pro (8 x 2.8 GHz, 16 GB RAM) with Radeon HD 5870 still does pretty well in X-Plane 10.
I might even get a HD 7950 (if it's compatible with the 2008 Mac Pro...) X-Plane 10 with HDR lightning will take advantage of that card, I'm sure.

I would love to set the grfx settings higher and be able to fly smoothly over the expensive scenery I have purchased the last couple of months... :(

You are going to be hard pressed getting a maxxed out iMac to beat the latest Mac Pro.
I don't know what's going on with the Mac Pro but I don't have a good feeling about it.

I'm glad you like the iMac but gaming PCs have more powerful CPUs and GPUs.
The iMac uses moblie GPUs which can't compare with the desktop GPUs of PC gaming machines.
The iMac has a very nice Intel Core i7-3770s. But PC gaming machines are using Intel Core i7-3820s and i7-3930s and i7-3960s.
I'd take an iMac over a PC any day of the week except for running X-Plane.
.

It's true that a Pro would beat an iMac...And I waited, and I waited and what did we get? Nothing. Like you, I think a small spec. bump followed by "goodbye" is the road for the Pro now...Apple take the view that towers are dead. I DO expect to see a more powerful iMac, slightly larger in form factor, with more powerful CPU / GPU options...Probably next year. I could not continue to wait, as I wanted to get the best re-sale value on my 2011 iMac. Same applies with my new one...If Apple do release a significant update, then maybe.

Must say that IF the Radeon 9750 really is coming to the Mac Pro, and it is compatible with the Mac Pro 3.1... it does give me another reason to be able to wait!

After a discovery that the UK adds an additional charge to the shipped DVD scenery packs.. ( £13.22) and after asking why, turns out the the wonderful UK customs are the only country out of the 300+ That X-Plane ship to, the most apologetic sales team said that although the charge was beyond their control, they would like to give me a freebie. COuld have had the 787, but not being a big fan of the heavy stuff, they recommended the brand new Challanger in the attached photo.

This is the most detailed plane I own....Everything works, and the detail is astonishing, I've been busy today, so still have 9 DVD's to install of the 15 that makes up the UK scenery pack, but took time out to have a flight in the newbie. Highly recommended plane if a tad expensive!

I would have gone for the 727. ;) But, that is awesome of Laminar Research to do that.

$29 isn't expensive for a good payware plane, IMHO. $59 for the 777 Wordliner is a tad bit expensive....... The plane is great, but I can only fly it in X-Plane 9. For some reason it chokes up in 10. I can only get 7 FPS...... Not getting much help from the people at .org either. :/ I've seen people with weaker systems than mine run the 777 without much issues.....

My new pedals are being delivered this morning! Really going to add in more realism. It will free up the swivel on the yoke that I had been using as the rudder axis. That in turn will free up the middle ( Blue) slider that I had been using for view zoom.

Much configuration to be done today!

I bought the 727 as there is a deal now on it.
So, I got the complete package and the complete set of liveries. The plane looks awesome!
But, it does hit the FPS quite a lot. I load EHAM (the lovely payware version) as my home-base and that airport hits my 5870 heavily already.... adding the 727 hits my 5870 hugely!

I so hope I can get the 7950 for my Mac Pro '08 over here in Holland soon...

Have fun, Macman45! Sounds cool!

I get about 29 FPS on my Late 2009 27" iMac Core i7 which has I believe a 4850 with 512 MB of VRAM with the 727-200F( only one I bought). Then again I killed most of my rendering settings to what I value most( airport and aircraft detail).

My CH pedals came this morning...Am about to configure them...going to need to change some of the mapping on my yoke too...:)

Just a heads up folks, there is a large update available for X-Plane...a word of warning, after installation, it sets your home airport to Hermatige Alaska, I have no idea why, but it was funny watching my buddy take off in the Cessna thinking he was at EGFF ( Cardiff) I didn't notice as was making coffee until he yelled about mountains:D

Just released....World Traffic module for X-Plane 9-10....Looks good, and not too expensive either:

http://store01.prostores.com/servlet/x-planestore/Detail?no=463

May well install this today...BTW it's 64 Bit ready.:)

Well, got myself updated the past few days.

Radeon 7950 is in the Mac Pro and also bought the World Traffic module. :)

The World Traffic plugin is cool, but I'm waiting for the update so that the settings can be "randomised".
ATM it's too much work to get the desired traffic at your favourite airports.

Yep, I found the same thing after using it for a while...A random or maybe time of day setting would be better than all the fiddling around each flight.

A buddy had a little trouble landing....:) We also took it in turns to attempt landing on an aircraft carrier with various planes...The old Stitson managed it after a few attempts, and I succeeded with the Baron...But not one of us could do it properly with any of the military fighters using the hook!

LOL!
Nice pic :)

Must admit I'm a more lazy type of flyer. I use the autopilot a lot including ILS.

Tnx for the heads op on the update!

Welcome to my world!

I wonder if that guy builds for other folks? I'm doing some mental figuring....I was left a modest inheritance a while back...been sitting in the bank...NO NO resist...I would actually wait for a new Pro anyway...Those Dell Ultrasharps are really selling well....I haven't seen one in real life as yet, but know folks who have them and they sure cut down on the monitor side of the price.

Lets see:

Mac Pro: ( Maxed out new model...) around £4K

6X Dell Ultrasharps with a little haggling from my supplier=£400 each

Whatever GPU that guy's using in his Pro...(£ Lots)

Sundry shelves, wall mounts etc. another £1K

Maybe could be put together for around 7K

...err....I'm out:)

...err....I'm out:)

I am kind of in the same dilemma.
I really want to get the highest rendering possible and I want to add lots of custom scenery.
That means getting a powerful video card with 4GB or more of vram. My Mac Pro only has two 6 pin connections which means I'd have to buy an external power unit.
or
I can wait for the next Mac Pro, but, as you point out, it will cost a minor fortune. Nope, I'm wrong. A major fortune.
or
I can buy a PC just for running X-Plane and use my Mac Pro for everything else.

I like the idea of buying a PC. I can get one with an Intel core i7 processor and a NVIDIA Geforece GTX Titan video card for $3,000.
That Titan video card is to die for. ..6GB of vram and rendering power beyond belief. But it should be powerful for its thousand dollar price tag.

I refuse to go down the Windows route, even though I'm perfectly capable of putting together a very powerful system with discount on all components. My iMac runs X-Plane very well, and I would have replaced my 2011 model with a new Pro. We don't even know what Apple have planned ( if anything ) My 2GB VRAM 32GB Ram 3.4GHZ 27" works well....But I sure would like that all encompassing video setup....I have mirrored X-Plane to my 46" Sony...of course you can't fly like that, but boy is the image impressive.....

It's my birthday next week....

Now...all I need is wealthy relatives...Of which I have err....None:D Mustn't grumble, a buddy is running FSX on a Celeron system initially with onboard GPU:eek: I gave him 2XNvidia 7600 GTX cards with the SLI bridge...not new tech, but has improved his detail and frame rates a lot. A celeron:eek: And I'm using a top end Intel quad....:)
