I'm not sure whether that command does xbmc only or not. My addons are set to update automatically anyway. I only run update/upgrade whenever I feel like it. I don't want to fix what's not broken. ;)

As for the file, what audio stream does it have? AC3? DTS? With the latter, [I think] you need a beefy machine to decode the audio. Even my HTPC has trouble with DTS-ES audio.

is there a way in the xbmc app for it to update itself automatically?

as for the file i had trouble with, I saw that there is a problem with some xvid or x264 files encoded in some type of 720p that xbmc stutters on. It looks like the newer builds havent fixed this yet so updating isnt as critical for me now

How do you add the "movies" folder on my macbook as a source on XBMC on my ATV2?

Ive tried all day and cant get any movies on my ATV2 using XBMC. Completly useless right now.

Can someone please provide a step by step tutorial on how to set up xbmc on my ATV2 to see my movie folder on my MBP. I'm completely unfamiliar with setting up network configurations, etc. Thanks so much!

Also, do I have to use SMB being that Im using a Mac computer?

Go to sharing under system pref. Enable file sharing. Under share folder click the plus and add your movie folder. Click on options(or somwthing like it). and mark it as a SMB server. You should get an SMB ip like SMB://10.0.0.0 etc.
Open xbmc on ur atv2. Under network enter that smb ip number under smb client. Then go to movies in xbmc, click on add source and choose smb. And your movie folder should be there. Add it as a source.

You sir are the man. I don't get an SMB like 10.0.0.0. Mine is like a regular ip address. 192.168 yadayada. Is that ok?

Done and done! Thanks for that great tip!

Now, how do I erase the movie folder source that I had there before, with the old SMB setting (eg WORKGROUP)??

HELP! Add-ons and scraping won't work any more!!!

My XBMC no longer lets me install add-ons. If I go to the add-ons and select one, like IMDB and hit install it takes me back to the list of add ons available, but never installs IMDB.

I tried a few others - no success.

Scraping is no longer working.. When I hold down the center button over a movie in the folder, it queries themoviedb and comes back with a result (i.e. "Conviction (2010)" so I select it and it says "loading movie info" but then it comes back and says "No info found! Conviction 2010 BlueRay 720p DTS x264 CHD"

These used to load just fine, so not sure why it's not letting me add anything to my library any more...

I notice when I select an add-on like IMDB it says "Downloading 0%"

I've tried both ethernet and wifi, doesn't seem to want to download the add-ons... but the weather updates still work, so I know at least XBMC is still able to access the internet!

So... I've been using Plex for a little while now.
I have to admit, It wasn't what I was originally hoping for. I wasn't expecting that it would take up my computer's processing power.
However, It's grown on me, so I'm a bit skeptical abou thtis whole XBMC thing.
Does XBMC bypass this issue? Does it read the files directly from the source and transcode them inside the Apple TV?
Because if that's the case, then I'm definitely sticking with XBMC!
Also, another question: Can I plug in a drive to the usb port in my ATV2 and have it read off of that?
If not, can I plug in the drive to my time capsule instead?
What I'm trying to avoid is having to have my computer on, serving as the host.

The question has been answered many times in the post, and is made quite clear on xbmc.org.

Yes, xbmc reads and decodes the file on the atv2 itself - A PC/NAS/whatever is only needed to provide a share to your media.
The plex app transcodes the media on a PC on your network, streaming the file as a natively supported atv format, which is why it's eating up cpu time (as well as reduced av quality and increased network traffic).

You can't plug a HD into the ATV2 (you can in the original ATV) - the hardware itself does not support USB host, there's no way around this.

I don't have a time capsule, I'm unaware how these work. If they supply a 'standard' share to your network, you can leave your pc off and stream directly off it.

Time Capsule

I, also, would really appreciate instructions on getting Apple TV2/XBMC to read the (non-apple format) movies stored on my Time Capsule.

Can someone who is using XBMC on the ATV2 tell me if DTS Music CD files (44.1kHz) play OK on it or not? They play fine on the ATV1, but I've read that ATV2 resamples everything to 16/48 before outputting and therefore would mangle any 44.1kHz DTS tracks.

But then I've read ATV1 sends most stuff out as 44.1kHz (save DD passthrough). That doesn't seem to be the case on mine, however when running XBMC. My receiver reads DTS 24/96 on one of my albums (so clearly XBMC can output other rates). That same album won't even add to iTunes, however.

Basically, I don't really want to switch to ATV2 right now if I cannot play my DTS music albums through it.
