But doesn't the mac have an autodetecting ethernet card?

At work we have a nice of straight and cross over cables that we have connected to the mac. The IT guy said it doesn't matter cause the mac auto detects the communication method and changes to suit the cable.

It very well can be, but I really don't know, so I would use, well, make, a cross-over cable in this instance.

The mac's networking card takes care of the Rx and Tx switching. Thats why the cross over cable isn't necessary or will work, It's just doing the same thing the mac is already doing.

Just to clarify The cable them selfs are fine, what I think is total crap that the People selling them charge 2-3 times as much for the same cable.

You're going to need a cheap router. One without wifi shouldn't be that much.

Ive done it with My windows based PC using the ethernet cable that came with my xbox 360 premium bundle. If i remember I selected both the ethernet connection and the wi fi connection and bridged the two. Not sure how you do this on a mac.

hmm... do you know the make and model of the pc? Since this is confirmed possible, im starting to think it's an issue between the chips that control the xbox and mac network cards. Like the early days of firewire items not working with each other.

I went to best buy and they said that you could make this connection without a router as long as you have a wireless internet recieving computer within cable length of the 360. They said that macs may require some IP tweaking on the xbox live settings, but they said that they have had customers return routers because they made this connection by themselves between their mac laptops and the xbox.

I got my xbox 360 today and connected my macbook pro using the INCLUDED (not crossover) ethernet cable to it to get xbox live. No luck by just changing the network settings on the mac. In order to make this work, follow the directions listed in the "slightly remarkable link" exactly as they say and you will be on xbox live in about 10-15 minutes. I am just telling you guys this because I am sure that a fair amount of people got xbox 360s for the holidays and I am trying to save you the money of buying a wireless router or the overpriced wireless adapter for the 360. Any mac model should work assuming it is recieving wireless internet. Thanks for all of your suggestions and God bless.

Hi. I have been searching the net for the past few hours looking for somebody who could help me with my xbox live problems and this looks like the right place.
I too am using my Powerbook as a way of connecting my xbox to live, but for some reason I can't get past the MTU test for some reason. I have both my ethernet and airport extreme set to 1500 mtu, but I still can't seem to connect. I've tried changing those values too, but nothing seems to work. Could it be firewall related (all of mine are turned off) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
