macOS Xcode

Hello,
I'm a med/biology student interested in learning some programming. For the moment all I know is how to compile my code. I wish I would be able to see what the actual program does. Would you, please tell me, what is the next step(s) after compiling? How do I proceed from project window further on?
P.S. I have no patience for reading the Xcode user's guide instructions

I really doubt that you will find anyone here that is willing to hold your hand and teach you how to use an IDE. You may want to reconsider reading the documentation, or purchasing a book.

Many of us have been completely self-taught and would expect people to at least do some searches on the subject.

I think thats the point though, its a simple question with an easy answer in many of the free available documentation resources on Xcode.

Although one of the things I like about MacRumors is the lack of the RTFM attitude you tend to get on Linux-related sites, he does have a point in that the best way you are going to learn is to read up on this yourself. Learning to program is a complex and difficult task, and you are going to have a lot more that you don't understand, and if you try to restrict your questions to the more difficult ones that really need clarification, you will learn faster and generate less bad will.

That said, I would have responded by telling you the answer, then provided a link to where you can look up such questions in future.

My attitude was in response to this guy sending a PM to me, my wife and 2 of my friends. I'm not sure why someone would start out by PM'ing people the exact same thing that he posted.

Even more annoying is that neither my wife or I have ever posted in this forum. We are not developers. My wife is a teacher and I am an IT manager.

Send a PM to an administrator. Doctor Q is likely your best bet...he's not on right now, but is around a good part of the time.

That wasn't an attack. You mentioned that you're lazy, errr impatient, but everyone has to start somewhere. If you don't want to read the documentation, I'd suggest getting a step-by-step book on Xcode.

Switch your studies

Some unasked for advice to the original poster, from a fellow doctor:

If you plan on going into med studies 1. with an attitude of "I'm too tired to learn that" and 2. so fragile that a simple (justified) reprimand causes you to hurtingly unsubscribe from the forum, you won't get very far in the field.

Med is ALL about studying on your own (and there is a lot to study), and is even more about your seniors harping on you, berating you for not knowing as much as you should (and they'll love doing it out in the open, in front of the patients...).

Develop some thicker skin, my friend, or your med career will be fantastically short.

I bought a book that takes you through step by step using Xcode, and I recommend it.

The Mac Xcode 2 Book, by Michael and Dennis Cohem, ISBN 0-7645-8411-1, and you should be able to get this at any of the larger book stores. It does a good job of explaining the basics up front, with good screen shots and everything.

I had a feeling that he was PM'ing EVERYONE that was online at the time. I think the amount of time he wasted PM'ing people could have been used reading over the basics of xcode.

I’m sorry for posting PM’s to members of this forum. First of all I did it because I’m young, naïve and spontaneous. Secondly, I didn’t think that in forums where knowledge is shared, people are that homophobe. Thirdly, I wasn’t selling anything or doing any religious propaganda. Some members are saying that I have a very thin skin, however I’m not the only one having it. Dear Transeau as well: he or she has been complaining so much about PM after I told him/her I did regret for 3 times!!!
Furthermore, I’m not a lazy bones. Sincerely, I think that if someone has travelled, read and had as many various experiences as I did (at his early twenties!) he:
1)WOULDN’T HAVE PREJUDICES;
2)WOULDN’T BE A FOLLOWER;
3)WOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND OTHERS.
P.S.: I have figured out the things I needed to know about Xcode myself and I will in future all alone!

hi all,

i guess some of you know a thing or two about xcode. i know nothing about it, but i've done some programming before using Macromedia Director (with some hard core lingo - not just glorified powerpoint).

are there any similarities b/w xcode / director ?
is xcode easy to learn? (high level language)
i learn fast, but dont have a lot of time. mostly i can do what i want in director, but if i can make faster apps that look more "mac like" with xcode that'd be cool.

Listen, I think I've made it clear that I understand perfectly I wasn't supposed to sent PM's like this AND I SAID I WAS SOORY(hoping that you'll read it). So why do keep reminding me of the same thing again and again?
Later on I tried to explain how I was thinking at that moment and of course, I KNOW NOW IT IS NOT THE WAY TO GO IN THIS FORUM.
Look, I've admitted it. It looks like nobody reads whatever I post, but picks a random phrase an continues this argument because he has no other way to let his frustration from everyday out.
By say "homophobe" I didn't mean gay(I'm not an english speaker)I ment a contact(via internet) between two persons(humang beings).

Download Xcode and read the free books on Objective-C. That should give you an idea of what is involved. Then take a look at the Apple Mac OS X SDK documentation.

Basically do a lot of reading . I'm not sure if it will be easier as I have never used Director but it is certainly a better rounded solution as you can do anything you want with Xcode.

There are lots of sample applications and code within the Xcode download. Just download and look through the documentation.

Just to give you an idea you can program just about anything you can imagine with Xcode (I believe that Adobe has switched Photoshop development to Xcode after the Intel transition). So if Photoshop is doable in it I'm sure you will be able to do anything that you want.
