They're definitely not going for the "Apple markup" approach.

They are using an opposite strategy.

Low margin / high volume model. And want to make profits from "service" instead of "hardware."

They are succeeding.

http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/02/xiaomi-1h14-phone-sales/

The fast-growing Chinese Android devices startup Xiaomi has put out a new set of sales figures for the first half of the year, revealing exactly how fast it’s now selling phones. Xiaomi shifted 26.11 million handsets in 1H14, an increase of 271% from a year earlier — and more than its total phone sales for the full-year 2013 (18.7 million).

Xiaomi has previously stated it’s aiming to sell 60 million handsets this year. Its phone sales in 2012 were 7.19 million, underlining how fast this business is blowing up.

1st quarter 2014: 11 mil
2nd quarter 2014: 15.1 million

2012: 7.19 million
2013: 18.7 million
2014: projected 60 million
2015: projected 100 million

Soon to be the third biggest in the world?

I like THREE things Xiaomi did other than turning the business model upside down.

- Hugo Barra. The Brazilian-born ex-Google exec was a huge coup for Xiaomi. Every keynote, there was a look in his eye that made you believe in anything he said. Unfortunate Sergy Brin had to steal his gf, but it was a huge hiring for a company that needs to overcome the language barrier. Every Facebook post, Xiaomi always have these neat little contests and tell us when the next flash sales are.

- Mitu bunny mascot. Every company needs a face attached to a company or something to identify with. Nintendo have Mario. Xiaomi have bunnies.

- They are now expanding into other markets and industries. Unlike HTC which is limited to smartphones and a tablet here and there, Xiaomi is now producing accessories and selling plush dolls.

The Most Successful Tech Company You’ve Never Heard Of

Why Xiaomi, the “Apple of China,” might help make your iPhone a lot cheaper.

As Xiaomi spreads its brand around the world, it will exert significant pricing pressure on the likes of Samsung and, eventually, Apple itself. The net result: Five years from now, your new iPhone might be significantly cheaper. You’ll have Lei Jun, the man who wouldn’t be Steve Jobs, to thank for that.

I don't think Xiaomi will help make iPhone cheaper. Look at the price of Mac vs PC.
