As for the overheating. why I bring it up as a concern is that it's far worse than the previous XPS's. I have never had my i7 XPS overheat the same way this thing will. I've had to turn it off at times and put it on my AC Vent just to get it to cool down after a sustained load. Never had this problem on the previous XPS I used. I'm not the only one. Everyone who has received one of these laptops has reported the overheating problem and the fans ramping up constantly.

I don't know if this is Dell's fault or Intel's 11th series CPU's are just blowing past thermal limits. But I honestly cannot recommend the 13" XPS at this point of time. Unless these issues really don't bother you.
After using it for a few days I can say heat is a concern. I was watching some videos last night and the machine got hot, like real hot. It was to the point where I had to remove it off my lap as it was uncomfortable...

I'll keep an eye on it and hope it was a one time occurrence. If it's an issue then back it goes! I really like the machine so it will be a shame if they didn't properly cool it.. I don't mind some heat and fan noise, especially in a machine this thin, light and compact but last night's heat was overboard to what I'd find acceptable...

Having said that, IF I need to send it back any thought on the Latitude line. I've started looking into the Latitude 9420 (non 2in1) this morning as a replacement if I need to send the XPS back due to heat. I can't really find many complaints with that machine. It's more expensive but I also get a bigger discount through my old employer on it, since it's a business laptop...

I have a bad feeling that you're going to have to send it back. if it's similarly outfitted as mine is, heat is a constant problem I have. I am almost always docked, so doesn't directly impact me. But the fans are almost always running pretty loudly.

I don't have the most up to date Lattitude to report on. I did just finish deploying some that were i5-8600u's. They seem to be far better devices for heatin and actually perform just as good as the XPS, probably since they're not throttling or overheating.

But that said: They're plastic body instead of metal. well built, but still plastic. display isn't as bright and the keyboard not quite as good. There's definitely some flex in the chassis due to plastic. It's also thicker by a CM or so. However, it's user servicable and I believe the storage and RAM can be user upgraded. The extra thickness also allows for better cooling.

Not sure the latest model, but the previous ones, while supporting USB-C, only have a single thunderbolt port. Supports charging and docks fine, but you still get a cheap feeling tumbler power brick instead of a USB-C power brick with this lineup. other than the USB-C port, it's well outfitted with SD Card, USB-A, HDMI and headphone.

they're decent "fleet" laptops for work.

Yeah I'll test the XPS out agin later with the same videos and see if it goes bananas again..

re: the Latitude 9420.. It's all aluminum build, best I can tell, and has a ton of ports.. The only thing upgradeable on it is the SSD..

Looking at the internals it has a much larger fan and better piping for cooling..

Shows a photo of the 2in1 but I would get the clamshell.. After chatting with the bizz team rep assigned to my former company, I can get it for right at $2K shipped and with taxes included...

It comes with 3 years next day onsite repairs and 3 years accidental damage warranty...

those look like good upgrades to the Lattitude line. the ones I had just deployed were the Latitude 3301's.

Those look similar to the Inspiron 2-in-1's I just bought my neices this year for online school. decent computers. They're essentially plastic versions of these lattitudes I believe.

had to return one for RMA, but once we had good ones everything was fine.

Ran some more testing on it and same result with the videos.. Figured I try a smallish 4K video from my GoPro and it got so hot is struggled to do anything.... I am going to re-install Win 10 and not tweak anything in registry or powershell and see how it behaves then.

While I doubt my edits caused the issues, it's worth testing before I give up on it... I have the Latitude quote in my email so it's a one click order if I decide to do so...

Back it goes.. While I expect some heat this is to much.. While doing tasks that I'd describe as medium duty, the machine gets hot enough to where it's uncomfortable on the lap. Heavy tasks turn it into a flame thrower and slow the machine down to a crawl..

Awesome machine, great looks, gorgeous screen, good specs killed by inadequate cooling..

I pretty much stick to Dell or Lenovo for orders as I can get pretty good discounts through them. I ordered the Latitude 9420 (clamshell) yesterday and it should be here Friday...

Bummer you had to send it back - it's certainly a pretty machine. Fingers crossed your Latitude works out better!

So my X1 Yoga (6th gen) is a brick... This is the 2nd one in a week that's arrived bad... C'mon Lenovo!

Anyways, instead of trying for the 3rd time with the Yoga I am seriously considering the new XPS 13" (9310) with either i5 or i7. Either will be ordered with 16GB RAM and a 512 SSD... The new XPS13's are 16:10 aspect ratio which is nice...

Anyone have the new 9310? I've read they run hot which is why I might consider the i5 instead of the i7. I am a basic home user that does web, email, watching video and light 4K video and photo editing..

Also I am debating between the 1080p matte (non touch) screen and the 4K OLED (touch) screen..

Any insight would be appreciated...
I have been using my Dell XPS 13 9310 since Feb of this year and its nice. I have the 4k Touch model myself i like it. I have the i7 model and while it does run hot i wouldn't say its terrible. I love it but I think I want to go back to using a macbook so looking to trade for one or sell this and just buy one. I do say I like the keyboard on this more even then the new keyboards on the macbooks but its a preference.

Latitude works out better!
I had a Latitude back in the day, a solid computer, no frills (at least what I bought) but it got the job done. Personally, if I were to opt for a 14" form factor, I would go with the razer but that's just me. Of course my 15" Razer is more then enough for what I use it for so I have no desire to get a new laptop

Yeah, that's my plan. I'm going to hold off until I see what Apple does in the Fall, but unless they really blow me away the midrange 14" Razer will be my next machine.

I was using my Razer Blade yesterday and the screen was so crisp, and fast, I was really enjoying the use of the laptop
