Yahoo Push Mail...what am I missing?

I feel really stupid asking this, but how do you set up Yahoo push email on my iPhone? I already have an existing yahoo mail account. I set up the account using the yahoo shortcut in the Mail setup on the phone, but it doesn't push my mail to me. I looked around the yahoo mail page to see if I could find some settings to turn on, but to no avail. What gives?

Try restarting your phone entirely. Sometimes that helps mail on mine a bit snappier.

i think you need to upgrade to Yahoo Plus for $20 a year to get real push service. i may be wrong though.

you don't need yahoo mail plus to get push service. as it's been pointed out, it isn't real push technology (i don't know how it's different), so you won't necessarily get it right when it appears on yahoo's servers. but it does come fairly quickly.

I don't know about fairly quickly, at least for me. It varies from a nano second to up to 7hrs and only then did it work because I manually updated.

even when the message isn't pushed, my phone is set to check for new messages every hour, and i've never been more than an hour away from a message. i have heard of people not getting their messages for hours, though.

Yeah, I have no idea whether or not it's "true push" email or not, but as long as it works in the same manner, that's all i care about. But my question was whether or not i need to turn on any settings in Yahoo to activate the push service.

Push does not poll. You would need a POP or IMAP account to be able to set the poll value. I only have Yahoo Mail so no way to set a poll value.

I just fail to understand how Apple can release "the most technologically advanced smartphone thats 5yrs ahead of anything out there" yet cant get real push email to work properly.

Even the Tmobile SK email delivery is WAY better than the iPhone. And dont even get my started about the iPhone compared to the Blackberry.

You will find that sometimes it works very well. Within Seconds. Other times it will have longer then 15 min. Other times it will not work at all until you do some tricks to get it to restart pushing email.

Most of the problems with Yahoo

I also believe that most of the problems are related to Yahoo. One problem I have seen a few times is that mail that I know I have deleted re-appears (confirmed by looking at the Yahoo Web Interface, not just iPhone). When this happens and the iPhone is "Checking for Mail" it just hangs. Once I delete the old mail (again) then the new mail is then downloaded to my phone and push starts working again.

This is why Apple needs to support other Push Technologies. My understanding is a lot of IMAP Servers support IDLE. Another Push Technology.

I would like it to support Active Sync (Microsoft Exchange). I would also like it to support the Microsoft Live Services. Nokia just announced support for Live Services.

Either Apple should open to 3rd party developers or get busy. With all the hacking going on without any help from Apple, this stuff should be easy to do either my Apple or the 3rd party community.

Ok so for kicks and giggles I made a brand new Yahoo! account and set it up on my iPhone. Push worked wonderfully. I read somewhere that Yahoo's older servers are not up to speed with the push thing. Anyone else tried this?

I was skeptical about this but figured Id give it a go. The only yahoo email account I had tried on my iPhone was one from a long time ago. Just made a new account, sent an email to it, and so far its been 5min and counting for a new mail notification.

I didn't exactly bust out the stopwatch, but I'd say it may have even been less than 1min. Definitely less than 5 mins. Then again, I only tried one email. Not very scientific, but it worked.

With my existing Yahoo account, I have yet to receive a single notification, and we're going on 3 days since I set up the iPhone for it.

I sent myself 5 or 6 emails to this new account I created. NONE came through on their own. I gave each a minimum 10min from the time I sent til I opened the mail app and manually fetched.

I give up on real push email.
