MicroSoft should have bought them (for say $20B) - Steve Ballmer error.
Google must be over the moon.

I remember using Yahoo Music/Radio back in 2002-4ish. It was ahead of its time (we had just gotten DSL here) but very good.

I'm at least glad a US company bought it.

Anyone else could have bought Tumblr and ended up with the same outcome.

I used to love Yahoo Messenger. Lol. Oh and yahooholigans (SP). Yahoo mail used to be the go to mail client. Now, they've fail apart. Sad.

Wow. Just read that yahoo turned down a 44 billion dollar offer from Microsoft in 2008.

"...this combination with Verizon and AOL.."

Sounds about right. No tally of acquisition is going to keep these companies relevant or repair VeriSUCK's customer "service".

Does anyone know whats happening to Yahoo's valuable stake in Chinese firm Alibaba? if Verizon aren't getting that.
Also what the value of Yahoo's Alibaba stock is - I seem to remember a figure of $20B mentioned?

From the TechCrunch article:

As of Friday July 22nd, Yahoo’s 15 percent stake of Alibaba represented $31.2 billion, and its 34 percent of Yahoo Japan was worth $8.3 billion. Yahoo’s patent portfolio, which is worth around $1 billion, isn’t part of the sale either.

YHOO has lots of technologies that AAPL would die for. E.g. search, mail, ad business, etc. Which is more value? Beats or YHOO.

I'm sure Apple wasn't caught by surprise on this, so they had their opportunity to consider it and evaluate the ROI it could provide
Given that they apparently weren't interested, I'd say they looked and passed on Yahoo as being a value add to their core business
Can't say as I would blame them for passing on this dumpster fire

Given they /bought/ Beats, I'm not so sure. Steve would never have bought Beats but I could imagine him looking at YHOO as a strategic buy for its technology. I mean, look at how integrated mobile services are with YHOO. You don't have mobile without YHOO services.

I'm genuinely intrigued as to what yahoo services you're referring to - as far as I'm aware, I don't have any on my phone apart from stocks which is only there because I can't remove it

Verizon seems like a odd suitor to me. I don't see the two integrating very well, and Verizon isn't getting the patents, so I don't know what they are trying to accomplish with this purchase.

Agreed, Yahoo is a dumpster fire, and there's really nothing that I can see that would be a good fit for Apple.

It was no secret that Yahoo was shopping itself around, so presumably, Apple doing its due diligence may have looked at what was being offered. I'm actually surprised by Verizon and what they hope to accomplish - I don't see this as a logical fit for what they do

We probably won't know what was part of that deal. If the only way to get Jimmy Iovine, Dre, Reznor and their field of enfluence with the recording industry may be worth more than the cost of Beats. Seeing as they are Apple employee's I'm sure something like that happened behind closed doors.
The relationships the people at Beats are able to continue and create were most likely the driving force behind that, not so much the hardware line.

It's probably more along the lines of just getting the userbase and connecting it to some of Verizon's "media"-like undertakings like go90.

And they had a CEO Marissa Mayer who has been reportedly on the decline for the last three years and on her way out. In any case, her severance package will be net worth of $60 Million. Weight is off her back and she is on a permanent vacation.
