Someone mentioned that you can join the IUP and delegate monthly payments from your Apple Card so you get 3% back.

IUP all the way for me. I used to pay in full for phones and sell them on swappa etc etc. Not worth the hassle anymore just to make a few more bucks. Yes you are forced to pay for AC, but definitely worth it. Also 3% back monthly when using your apple card.

So, blackchi, you signed up for the program and selected your Apple Card to be the account that the payments are charged to?

Aren’t Apple Trade-in and iUP similar in value?

I mean, you buy iPhone for $1100, then at the end of the cycle, Apple offers you $500 for it, which is almost 50%, which is similar to iUP’s 50%.

Does the IUP require you to go into an Apple Store? If yes that would be a huge disincentive to me this year if I wanted the phone close to release day. In my local Apple Store in the UK which I have visited 3 times in the last month there have been lengthy queues to get in every time even though I was careful to always visit in the middle of a weekday afternoon which is the quietest time. It's all due to Covid-19 restrictions where very limited numbers of customers allowed in the store at any one time (only6 customers into a store with over 150 display stations).

I think this year's iPhone release day(s) have the potential to be chaos on a scale never seen before at Apple Stores unless a lot of people are already wise to this and avoid any in-store pickups during the first few days of availability for the new iPhones. In fact in at least some locations Apple might have to do something like banning in-store collection because even now with not much going on the queues at my local Apple Store were already using quite a lot of space outside the store because the queue was 2m socially distanced. I don't think the mall could actually accommodate a socially distanced queue of the length sometimes seen on iPhone first availability day, it would probably have to stretch round the whole mezzanine level which is where the Apple Store is, go down the stairs, and then start wrapping round the ground floor concourse!

But no Applecare plus and 45% instead of 50% plus Applecare plus is actually quite the difference.

No, it does not. You can sign up online. You have the option to go to the store and trade in your phone but it can all be done online.

They don't make you go to the store in the USA anymore. I've read posts on here about people saying it's still in-store in the UK but I would double check.

OP you are like me - a new phone every year.

I can't do the 30 month carrier offers.

I just paid off the 24 month Citizen's loan in a year so I'll be trading her back into Apple....

Apple Card is 24 months but I can pay it off early so that's what I am doing.
Plus Apple Card gives back 3% cash back immediately.
I didn’t pay mine off, so do I get a box to return my iPhone 11 now that I just preordered an iPhone 12 Pro?

If you are on the AUP and trade in, you can use shipping that Apple pays or do in the retail store.
Thanks so much! This is what I’ve been looking for. So does shipping and box comes with the new phone? I might take it to the Apple Store anyways since I’m close to a few, make sure they get it without issues.

Depends:
If you have a subscription / lease program like JOD, Next, then no -you send it back and turn her back in.

If you chose to do a financing thru the carrier or Apple by a trade in, you will have to return the phone, and keep paying the old phone until you satisfy the terms of the original contract.

Mine was financed thru Citizen's One loan (not the iUP) and paid it off early so that I don't keep paying monthly for the old phone.

My new phone was paid for using Apple Card 24 month.

I financed though Citizen One iUP

You get the new iPhone in one shipment and then Apple sends a separate box to return old iPhone.

Used to seek my old iPhone on eBay to offset the outright purchase of the new (3G > 4 >5 > 6), but grew tired of the scammers, bad actors, fees etc. Found that selling the same device into CEX got me the same money (6s) as ebay, so took do doing that for family phones. Then sold a pristine X to them, unused accessories, fully boxed with original plastic wrapping for the phone itself - they insisted it was B grade and paid accordingly.

Figured for the few quid difference it makes, I bought the 11 Pro on the iPhone Upgrade Programme. Going for the 12 Pro this year so will be handing the 11 Pro back in. Yes I could probably be better off with a private sale, but at this point I’m passed being interested in the listing, selling then dealing with returns/damaged goods claims and everything else that goes with it.

My iPhone has long been my primary music listening device, my ebook reader, my banking & home finances device along with the usual smartphone stuff. I don’t mind paying a little over the odds for the ‘new car every year’ experience without any attendant hassles. For what I get out of it, it’s worth it.

The IUP is financially beneficial to Apple, not the customer. However, I chose to convert to the IUP this year for non-financial reasons. Dave Ramsey wouldn't be pleased lol.
Like you, I got ~ 60% of the value of my 11 Pro back by reselling. I might have gotten more by selling on eBay, but not worth the hassle this year for me. I went with IUP because I wanted (1) to go case-free this year which (2) meant paying for AppleCare. (3) I will be upgrading next year because we all know they're gonna cram this year's Pro Max camera into next year's Pro and (4) the Max is just too large for me.

UK is in store only... sucks bananas.

I am ready to book my appointment on 6 Nov.

So I started last year with the iPhone upgrade program. Before I was using the AT&T next program, and it was a mess. No thanks going back to that. This year was the first year of upgrading without keeping I had before (in this case the 11 pro). Super easy process, and I got use to the $50 and change charge each month and didn’t mind continuing that for a new phone. I did the resale thing before and just hated the hassle of it. Maybe it’s better now, but the iPhone upgrade plan just works for me.
