I suppose this works as well, the only thing is wouldn't the progress bar still be black and therefore not visible on the black background? Also does that change the initial boot up screen color (before the efi picks a partition to boot from)?

Also isn't your rmbp supposed to have the black boot screen by default in Yosemite?

White progress bar. I believe it should have a black screen by default, so I'm not sure why it was grey instead.

I decided I wanted to use your technique on Mavericks, but I can't get it to work . The background changes color successfully, but the boot logo doesn't change. Does it have to be specific dimensions or something? I extracted the Yosemite white apple logo from appleLogo.efires.

I believe it must be a png

FWIW, I've installed PB1 on my 2010 Mac Mini and my 2013 Mac Pro and the former boots with a grey screen, the latter black. Black definitely rules!

I have a blank screen with white progress bar on a 2014 (i guess 2013 model) iMac. Scared me when I saw it, glad it's normal!

If you ever boot to an old version again (10.9 or so), you'll boot totally blacky (no apple logo), but after that, EFI will show gray background for the next boot on.

PS: Yes, I had the same doubt and risked myself for science. I own a 2014 macbook air 13"

This is not true. I downgraded back to Mavericks, but my booting process is still black. The startup manager, which we access by holding the option key, has the black background as well. By booting process I mean that the screen during the first few seconds, including the startup sound, is black. After that the grey screen with Apple logo comes up, which is typical for Mavericks. Before we used to have the grey screen during the startup sound and the startup manager had the grey background too.

Don't know why the Yosemite updates the efi or smc automatically, I have never had any problems with the previous configuration on my 13 inch rMBP, mid 2014. Actually, it bothers me because I like bright colour much more!

Yosemite Boot Screen

Glad to hear it isn’t a glitch in the install. I saw that little Yosemite startup loading bar and thought OH NO! a firmware update that won’t go away.

I recently installed Yosemite on a 2nd partition on my Late 13 MBPR to mess around with it. I noticed that after install, my screen boots up black for about 2 seconds and then proceeds to the gray loading screen for Mavs (I removed Yosemite already)

Is there any way to get rid of that 2 second black boot up screen? I want to revert it back to the original gray screen that used to appear from the initial boot all the way to the login screen

thanks for any help

Attention to firmware after removing Yosemite (orientation)

… boots up black for about 2 seconds and then proceeds to the gray loading screen … I removed Yosemite …

A guess: you removed the operating system but there remains the associated firmware.

Please see my first post under Did Yosemite Update Boot Firmware?

Thats exactly what happened. Now im trying to revert the system firmware back to the one I had

Which would be "Macbook Pro Retina EFI Update V1.3"

Try running the Mavericks installer, this should revert it back to the Mavericks firmware. Doesn't have to be installed on your main partition.

What's not possible?

(Please note that the discussion is spread across two topics following a triple post …)

I think he's referring to the firmware downgrade -- which is possible

Ive done a full wipe twice already through internet recovery and reinstalled mavs. Nothing reverted it

This worked on the DPs, and it thinks that it has changed the picture (like when you run it a second time it's the picture you chose), but the logo is not changing when you boot up.

It works 25% for me. When I boot up my MacBook (2009 model) with Yosemite, my new image shows up. When the progress bar gets about 1/4 of the way across, the apple image comes back.

Gee whiz. Haven't seen that one. There is a lot going on during startup, though. You can see the background color change slightly a couple of times (I think one of them is the gamma setting kicking in). On a monitor at work, which is actually a Samsung television, when I bring in my mini from home to do updates, the progress bar gets to about 25% then it changes into a narrower progress bar imbedded in the middle of the first thicker one, then thin bar finishes going the rest of the way. It's the only monitor where the progress bar changes height.

Anyone wanting to set a black boot screen needn't modify boot.efi files or anything. Simply open: /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist then add:
Code:
<key>Background Color</key>

<integer>0</integer>

Has anyone tried this on 10.10.3?
