#So humorous..:apple:

I don't see anything funny in not being able to use this $1,100 computer anymore.

It takes 5 minutes from the Power button all the way until I can (barely) use it.
I can't run more than one application at once.
If I right-click anywhere, it takes about 3 seconds before the contextual menu appears.

The only OS that made sense on this machine was Snow Leopard.

I'm sorry but 5 years in the tech industry is a very very long time. OS updates every year mean that tech goes out of date quickly. If you want to update to the latest OS then you have to buy a new machine.. or just don't update and stick to the OS that it was designed for.

It's like buying a car then complaining that it doesn't perform the same after years of use and that it doesn't have the features all the newer cars do. If you want new then buy it.

Plus $1100 is the lower end modal. You can't expect the cheap modal to last as long as the high end modals.

sorry.. I am not English native..So I find some phrase unusual...
I just bought my new Macbook 15' and replaced my VAIO bought 2010 mid. That's useable after I add 4GB RAM and a 120GB SSD ..but I want to begin developing iOS.
Maybe you should upgrade a SSD ? Or get a new one?

Yosemite DP5 runs smoothly here on a 27 inch iMac late-2012 (bought March 2013) with 32GB RAM and 750GB SSD.

Have to wait for Carbon Copy Cloner developer to release a beta of his next version to work with Yosemite :/ Decided to bite the bullet and setup scripts with rsync 3.1.1 to tide me over. Using SuperDuper! to clone main system drive to disk image every couple of days until CCC 4.0 beta is released to those of us on the testing list...

Minor cosmetic glitch in Mail is only thing I've noticed.

Mavericks on my mid 2012 macbook pro would occasionally slow down and have issues. I have installed the Yosemite public beta on this machine, and it is night and day.

This baby flies now, and it feels like I got a new computer. I've noticed a huge performance increase in Safari. On Mavericks, whenever I would use the trackpad swipe gesture to go back to a previous page, safari would hang for a bit. On Yosemite it has been so smooth and quick. I can only hope it stays this way.

Loving Yosemite over here.

Same here on my 2010 MBP upgraded with 8GB RAM and SSD. I hope the lags will be removed for the final release.

Same here on Mid 2011 MBP, 4GB RAM. I have also tested on a Mid 2011 MBA and it is almost the same. Gets worse when attached to a thunderbolt display. I have some faith that it will get better as I have seen people with newer rMBPs also complaining about the visual lags.

If it didn't run smoothly on that beast it wouldn't run anywhere. :p
I think you have one of the best gpu power to number of pixels ratio, probably only beated by the Mac Pro.

Yes, $1100 is the lower-end model MacBook Pro. I simply can't imagine people having regular MacBooks.

I don't expect it to work as smoothly and beautifully as when I bought it, but I expect it to at least support a function that I've used since the last 20 years old on a computer : multitasking. The way it is when I am in Yosemite, I have no app opened and it's already taking 100% of my 4GB of RAM...

In all honesty, I may have to regress to Snow Leopard to make this laptop usable once again. Its downward spiral to hell started with Lion and Mavericks is worse than Mountain Lion, even with all these performance tweaks.

A five year old computer is not worth $1,100 anymore. Do they not teach you economics over there?

It's not worth $0 either. Talk about being arrogant...

Installed Public Beta today over Mavericks. In general, it is rather fine so far. Though, need time to adapt for the new design as was with iOS 7.

Where did I say it was worth $0? It's still useable, right? Technology progresses and half a decade old hardware can't be expected to keep up with current software. I'd be happy just to be supported still, let alone expect it to run the same as with the OS it shipped with.

Not sure what's going on with your machine, but my sister's 2009 13" MBP (also 4 GB RAM) runs Mavericks without a hitch. Have you booted Mavericks into a new user account? Also, when you say Yosemite is using all of your RAM without any apps open, is it "active" RAM or "inactive" RAM? Because if it's "inactive" it shoudln't necessarily be the culprit.

Strange that Mavericks did not run well and Yosemite does. They share the same underpinnings and memory management etc.

I suspect you had a bad install of Mavericks.

Mavericks brought my Early-2011 MBP to life!

Did you do a clean install of Yosemite? I can't see why it should be that slow!! Lion runs very well on my 2008 White Macbook so there must be something up with your Pro... Have you considered going to 8 GB of ram and possibly a SSD? its a possibility that your Harddrive is dying....

Runs great on my early 2009 Mac mini (with 8gb ram and ssd).

A lot of slow performers on this thread seem to be laptops with ? Integrated graphics. Is that the issue. My Mac mini has 8400m and plays 1080p without any probs, but can'tanage 4k v well.

I had the same problems and I think it's because Apple doesn't care about people with a 5 years old device. They just want to SELL new ones, that's how their business works.

Just think about why they don't even charge now for the OS updates. They release a new OS every year with (some cool) new features that we want to get in our computers. But they don't care about performance because they just want you to buy them their latest macbook ...and eventually we'll all do it. :)

In fact I ended up buying a new SSD and 8 GB of RAM. For a total of $250 CAD, I did a pretty solid revival of my computer, and gave my money to somebody else than Apple. Thought it was the best solution available...

Yes, fortunately those models allowed to replace some parts, I did the same. It's a pity that newer models are not that easy to upgrade.
