Yosemite Restart Screen - Progress bar?

Just wanted to confirm if others are seeing this as well.

In Mavericks when you restart your computer or simply turn your computer "on," you wait a few seconds and you are taken to your password screen.

In Yosemite, whether you are restarting your computer or turning your computer "on" there is:

1. black screen w/ white apple logo
2. white progress bar going left to right

Looks very similar to the software update screen, when your computer restarts to execute an install.

Just wondering if this is normal behavior and if others are seeing this as well?

I see this too, I only see a grey screen and not my blurred wallpaper behind the login. Looks very out of place.

I have the same problem except the screen isnt black its grey with a black progress bar then it goes to the login screen.

The first 1/3rd is the actual loading part; after that the rest of the bar just flies through for the transition of color. It can be confusing because at first it looks like it is going very slow but later it finishes instantly/

My mac used to have that progress bar on snow leppard, but it went away when I upgraded to mavericks. Looks like the progress bar is back when booting.

The boot process is actually exactly the same in Yosemite. What was happening when you saw the spinning wheel in Mavericks is exactly the same as what's happening in Yosemite when you see the progress bar: the kernel is loaded, file system is checked, and certain system services are started.

But yes you're right -- the progress bar just makes it feel faster. It's an illusion.

Same problem, the solution is Hard Disk utility, Verify Permissions, once it's finished (tons of errors), Fix permissions... Done, now wakes up normally. I was really mad at this. Seems the Yosemite OS installer is the culprit.

Thanks for the info, but Iʻm confused by what you were able to fix. Could you tell me what your boot screen looked like after you fixed permissions? Do you not have the apple logo/progress bar animation?

Iʻve also fixed permission, and the boot screen progress bar seems normal to me. As I, and others have mentioned, there is a "white apple logo" on "black background" with a "progress bar animation," quickly followed by your password screen.

Actually I have not rebooted, only woke from sleep. Before fixing permissions I got the black screen and progress bar before waking (no apple). Now it just wakes straight to desktop as with Mavericks.

On booting, I did have the white apple on black and progress bar before. Now I still don't know. I can't restart right now, I'm in the middle of something, but I will post later.

I did look at some online Yosemite boot screen videos and it does seem that the apple logo/progress bar is the way Yosemiteʻs boot screen is supposed to look.

Right, I think the white Apple on black is the equivalent to the dark Apple on light grey screen plus spinning wheel in Mavericks. Sounds logical. Before fixing permissions though, it took way too long before username screen and computer response was weird, kinda slowish/sluggish and just felt weird; and the sleep/waking black screen with progress bar was really annoying. Now it "feels" smooth and "normal". So I think it's fixed now, considering the large amounts of permission errors it found. So I'm hoping all is OK now.

If you have a gray screen with icons for login id(s), it's probably FileVault was enabled during install.

So, once logged in, select your main drive and do a "Get Info" to see if format is "Journaled, Encrypted".

It is supposed to be like that! It is completely normal! You are stuck with it because it is supposed to be like that.

If anyone is experiencing the problem where the progress bar gets stuck at 50% and the computer will not boot, try this quick fix. For us this appears to occur after a power surge, and unplugging the power cable from both ends will often fix it. Before Yosemite it appeared as just a gray screen with the Apple logo, now it shows as a progress bar stuck at 50%.

Well, it flips if you have Filevault enabled....if not, it's the usual boot-login sequence.

Yosemite and Two Screens

Anyone else having weird issues with dual screens which worked fine under Mavericks but not Yosemite?

My progress bar starts on my main DVI display (1920x1200 - which I always used to log in under Mavericks and every OS before) then stops, the screen goes black then starts up again but this time the progress bar and logon screen ends up on my slave screen - a Panasonic TV in PC Mode which should be 1280x768 but actually only wants to works in 1024x768 under Yosemite!

Intriguingly according to the mouse pointer the slave screen is on the right of the main screen until I complete logon when it returns to the actual position which is on the left???? Even more bizarrely, my screens then swap wallpapers and create extra spaces every time I log out / in?

I've tried mucking about with Mission Control settings (everything off except "Displays have separate Spaces") but the system DOES NOT behave as it once did - it is now completely illogical!

Anyone got any ideas?

Open the displays pref pane, click arrangement, and drag the white bar to the display you want to be the "main" one
