The boot process is actually exactly the same in Yosemite. What was happening when you saw the spinning wheel in Mavericks is exactly the same as what's happening in Yosemite when you see the progress bar: the kernel is loaded, file system is checked, and certain system services are started.

But yes you're right -- the progress bar just makes it feel faster. It's an illusion. :)

No it makes me worry that somethings wrong with the filesystem and its rebuilding files to boot up. I'd like to see it go away.

With Yosemite they've flipped the boot process.

Before, you would turn your computer on and forget about it until it was time to use it—you would then log in and you would be shown the desktop immediately.

With Yosemite, they expect you to login essentially right after turning the machine on. I think it makes the boot process feel faster, or perhaps it's a more subtle technical aspect that made them change it.

That means you elected to enable FileVault 2 when you installed Yosemite. Yosemite itself without that turned on still requests a password AFTER it has booted.

It's a Driver Issue!

Following extensive phone discussions with Apple Tech Support, it turns out that my dual screen problem is down to the graphics card driver.

As ATi Graphics Card drivers (mine is a Radeon HD 5770) are part of MacOS it's down to Apple to resolve. The Tech guys have forwarded the issue onto Apple for further investigation.

In the meantime it's either put up with the problem - for me it's a start up problem that's ok in the short term - or revert back to Mavericks! Hopefully Apple will find a solution quickly.

I bought a band new 2014 Mac Mini a couple of weeks ago and I get that black screen with the white Apple logo and white progress bar every time I reboot. Is this normal? Other than that, my Mac Mini works perfectly well
