"That Scrabble app shows the whole board without your zooming or panning: a free companion app for your iPhone or Touch is called Tile Rack; it lets you fiddle with your letters in private, then flick them wirelessly onto the iPad’s screen."

It must then be possible to use the iphone as the steering wheel or countless other ways. Totally cool :)


Edit: makes me rethink ditching the iphone and going to dumbphone/ipad

I paused when I read that and pondered the possibilities for a moment. This is the beginning of something huge.
 
This shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone...iPhones have been able to talk to other iPhones and iPod Touches using the built-in SDKs (primarily aimed at multiplayer/peer-to-peer gaming) so there is no reason to think that the iPad wouldn't also work as just another peer.

Can't argue that that Scrabble idea sounds like a particularly inventive use of the functionality though.
 
If next gen iphone had a sensor that detected movement in all directions, you could use the iphone like a Wii controller, no?

Dual Use Apps

In part, this is why I'm not so concerned about not having a camera on my iPad. If Apple allows it, you could just wirelessly connect your iPhone to your iPad and jointly use the same camera on both.

Developers are going to come up with some great cross-device apps, and I can't wait!

Is that's essentially what the accelerometer-gizmo does? I recall reading it's actually much more sensitive than the iPhone actually needs for swapping portrait and landscape mode.

Can you imagine using your iPhone's camera as your Skype/iChat camera on your iPad? Not now... but someday.

Wow, yeah, just like that guy above me posted. :)

The accelerometer(as far as I know), only detects movement in 2 dimensions, it can't tell if you turn in a circle while holding the phone, only if you turn the phone rotationally. Some of the software is already there is my point, they just need a better accelerometer. *wink wink nudge nudge*

Of course the Wii controller has a strap for a reason lol...imagine the flying iphones into ipad pics.

I say lame, you need a $200 iphone, $499 ipad, and a dock likely another $80 just to video chat? I'll wait for V2.

1) Most iPad buyers are likely to be iPhone owners
2) You don't NEED the dock... you could just prop the items up anyway you want, or use two existing docks.

So it's really just software

I agree. I would guess that 80+ % of iPad owners will also own iPhones. So, that's taken care of.
 
this was my number one thought when the ipad was announced. all I could think about was them working together a zillion ways. can. not. wait.

The accelerometer detects acceleration along 3 axes. There's always some force in one or more axes from gravity, so it can detect which way is down, but if you accelerate it sufficiently in some direction, it will register that acceleration in addition to gravity. If you spun it parallel to the floor fast enough like on carnival centrifuge, it'll read 1G down and some component >1G towards the outside of the spin; if you're holding it screen facing you, it would think it was laying on its face from the centripetal force, not rotating.

If you want to detect rotation correctly, you have to have a gyroscope for each axis, not just an accelerometer.

Exactly...there isn't some magical connection between the iPhone and iPad, it's just a matter of two WiFi and/or Bluetooth devices communicating with each other.

I'm sorry, but using two devices to videochat? It's 2010. No.

People just need to accept that the iPad doesn't have a camera. It's really not that big of a deal folks.

The difference is that having one (or more) iPads serve as a game board or hub makes a huge difference in the overall experience.

I think he just meant that technically there is nothing special going on here, even if the effect is pretty cool.

I wonder. Take a photo on the iPhone and wirelessly transfer to iPad?
