You Can Enable Multitasking on the iPhone 3G

sweet! This is great news so far... Lets just hope apple doesn't complicate things on release. And that it will at least be usable on a 3G
I don't agree that this means apple will officially support it - they've already announced they won't. Consumers won't be going into any files and changing the multitasking value to “TRUE”.
The title of this thread is "YOU can enable multitasking on the iPhone 3G", no one said Apple was going to support it.

You were saying that you didn't think Apple was going to support it but no one even implied that, again, the title says that YOU can enable it, not Apple.
brilliant.. a few of my friends were PO by the fact they would be a little over a year in their contract and they can't multi-task...

The same thing held true for the iPhone 3G and getting the numeric battery thingy and apple didn't patch that.
Very interesting, but I would imagine that they might make it a bit more difficult to do in the final version. I would expect them to remove the multi-tasking APIs from the final 3G firmware (there would be no need of them...)
Friends with 3g have enabled multitasking, and they report no significant performance loss.

Your friends have not really "multi-tasked" as there are no apps yet out that take advantage of the new APIs. All your friends have done is use the new saved states and the new quick-launch toolbar. The features use no resources. It won't be possible to get an idea of performance until they run several background processes at once.
To be clear, I am not saying that Apple is right (I suspect that it is, in fact, an artificial limitation). I am merely saying that your friends haven't disproved it until they've actually used it.
Are you kidding?! My 3G doesnt have enough memory to even remember the number of the song i left off on in shuffle, what makes you think that multitasking on the 3G would function well at all....
My question is how the heck did your friends get root access to be able to change the system file? Are they dev team?
It might be possible once 4.0 is JB.
Also there is a few people that have already JB 4.0 betas thru various methods so its not impossible and like they stated not that hard to enable it on 3G iphones.

Sure, it's not surprising you'll be able to enable it if jailbroken, but don't expect performance to be that great. This doesn't change the fact the the 3g is severely short on RAM, so while you may be able to stream audio in the background, I wouldn't expect much more. It's not like you are going to be able to run a Nav app in the background while playing music or web browsing, and I'm sure this is why Apple isn't giving the 3g full support.
