I pleaded my case with 1800-my-apple.

They set me up with a meeting with the store manager and put me on hold to speak to his superviosr while he was doing it. I told him the truth and he and his manager (relayed form manager) said that they would speak to the manager on my behalf regarding the incident. I dont hold any high hope for them to say, "hi buddy, you F'ed up but, you're a cop and here's a new iPad" nor do I want it that way.

.......this blows bad. I know its $500 but hey, $500 is a lot to normal dudes with mortgages and kids.
 
SIDE NOTE - That "object" which looks like an iSight, looks EXACTLY like an iSight. While I was holding, I mentioned it to the cust service rep who laughed and said " ha ha. You know...Apple secracy". It looks like the perfect divit covered in a peice of plastic. Dosent look like there is anything behind it that would be a light sensor as someone posted. It looks like an empty space for a camera!!
 
Do you think any of the people you showed it to while you had it will buy one for themselves? Maybe you could explain to Apple how many sales you generated for them. :)

As most of us are, I am an advocate for Apple. I said this to them and they said "Thank you Sir. Apple as a comp. are advocates of you. "

Regardless of the outcome. The two guys i spoke to were completly cool about the whole thing and very much respectfull and sympathetic. It doesent change anything. Worse case scenario, I wait a coupe months and buy a new one.

for the record, THIS IS A PERSONAL ITEM IN A POLICE CAR NOT A POLICE ISSUED ITEM. No one is paying for this but my ego and wallet.

Yes I know it sucks, but you'll get through it. Every coin has two sides. You could have slipped when hurrying up to respond to that call and ended up with a broken leg. Would that be better? Probably not. These things just happen. :)

So...unless you're fortunate enough to get a replacement gratis, are you going to get a 3G version sometime down the road?

Obviously, in the grand scheme of things, this does not register as an "issue" but hey, its a MAC blog. This is the time and place to bitch and moan about petty stuff.

OBTW...anyone who takes a job in LE and makes what you guys are paid (not enough IMHO) AND puts up with the kind of crap you have to...deserves respect from normal folk...cause y'all don't do it for the money. (and I'm sure your customers give you a lot of respect :rolleyes: )

I liken it to a bad trip and fall. You know when someone falls, it may look hilarious but all laughter is held until the extent of the injury is discovered? Thats what it was like. People outside of the job waited till about now. Cops gave me 10 min which is a super long time for them

No, you don't deserve it. Bad things don't happen to good people because they deserve it. You made an honest mistake and got badly burned.

When Apple does replace it (for a fee), perhaps you might consider leaving it at home next time. I use an iPad Touch as my "mini iPad" to take to work with me.
 
This is gonna sound weird, but: I am so sorry for your loss.

I hope you end up with a new one, somehow. (One that hasn't been run over.)

True, who knows, since it's not that bad maybe they won't notice the damage and just exchange it...

Try taking it to the Apple Store and see if you can at least get a refurb for a cheaper price. Just be like uhh... "It came in the mail like this."
