I'm sure your intention was good, but that thread is ancient in terms of widgets. Last post was 2014.

I still like the idea of trying to get the ios8/9 thread we've discussed moved. That's an excellent thread.
Well it's from iOS 8 days like the other thread. And many of the widgets from there still exist. Although now there are updated and newer ones as well.

Better we focus on pacorobs thread instead of multiple threads. It's better and more current.

The Transit and Dark Sky widgets are great -- the silver linings in the dark cloud that is iOS10.

Dark Sky has an excellent widget that matches the rest of the iOS 10 widget look and provides hyperlocal 'next hour' conditions which is aweseome.

Interesting. Haven't touched this app in months. Didn't think anyone used it anymore as it seems unreliable and only good for the current day (forecasts are wack)

Having to go back to the home screen is still a lot less convenient than being able to hop into the settings page of your choice from the notifications shade. I used launcher to access my Bluetooth settings a lot.

But you CAN get into it from the notification shade... Swipe right and the widgets are still there, at least on my phone...

But the widgets aren't allowed to link to specific sections within Settings anymore in iOS 10.

Hmm. Works very well here in the NYC vicinity, it's my go-to for forecasts, very accurate.

More like they have their own idea and implementation of them.

Right. The problem with that however is that Android really brought the widget idea to the table and created something. Apple comes along, after all of this has been figured out, sits down, and says, yeah, we will have widgets now as well.
The problem with that is that they really don't do anything close to what they do on Android.

They do their own version of them. Some might certainly not like what they offer for one reason or another (perhaps simply because Android's way is better for them or because of something else), while others are fine with it or even like it, as they are with what else iOS offers in the way it offers it (even if Android or another system might do it different and perhaps better for some).

You're trying to be too even handed. Widgets in iOS are fine, and I'm glad to have them, but let's be honest, they are far more powerful in Android. They are not just "different".

They are more powerful in Android because the implementation is different (of them and of how things are done in Android). As far as what's better or worse, that's basically in the hands of the user as far as what they like or works better for them (for whatever reason) and accordingly their decision to go with a particular device and OS.

It's interesting that you bring up better vs worse in your reply. Making that kind of designation is far more difficult. Everyone uses their device differently. I'm glad you agree with my post that Androids widgets are more powerful. It is likely iOS widgets will eventually reach that same level of interaction. But it will be on Apple's terms.

I brought up better or worse basically in relation to how this aspect of it all was brought up earlier, where although the actual specific words weren't used, part of the implication seemed to be that Apple didn't do as good of a job in copying and accordingly their implementation was essentially worse.

Coming from Android, this is correct. They are absolutely subpar when it comes to functionality and availability along with implementation to be honest. It is almost like Apple incorporated it into the OS as an afterthought instead of a front running idea.

Dark Sky seems like a decent app and all but it isn't available in my region. Any other similar apps to recommend? With a widget of course.

I still use launcher, albeit with less functionality. I do like how launcher is streamlined for the view, I made them the smallest and have 7 per launcher.

Wish Apple would let launcher have its old functionality or create their own version.

I use Magic Launcher but we all suffer the same fate. All we can do for now is hammer Apple with feedback asking them to bring back the functionality. And hope the launcher developers don't decide to just give up. I've encourage the ML developer to focus on Magic Launchers (memory, battery, speed, etc) for now.

Copied and Cheatsheet both have pretty decent iOS 10 style widgets. They look good and work well.

Widgets are still very limited at the moment. They are nice glances sure, but they are basically just glorified app links. They need to be interactive.

For now and since the beginning of introducing them it seems that's how Apple sees them and wants them to be--glanceable information which can perhaps offer some links/shortcuts to particular functions, but not really mini-apps or something else closer to that.

That is not what a widget is. They took the idea of a widget, and got really lazy with it, but said hey, we have widgets now. No, you really don't.
