Hmm, I didn't notice that. It's very strange (and probably not legal under the US Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act). But
it really makes no difference (to me) because Newegg will
replace a defective unit for a new one for 1 year.

I guess I'm still concerned because Newegg's mail-in rebate policy says products offering mail-in rebates are not returnable once the rebates have been filed and only the product manufacturer can replace any defective item missing the UPC code.

If you're worried, call Newegg and/or IcyDock; they're both
in Lenoland. I can't believe Newegg would demand to have
the original packaging with defective merchandise returned
for replacement. Who keeps old packaging for a year?

OTOH, I would expect them to refuse a refund without the
original packaging -- including UPC.

Bottom line: if you're not comfortable with it, don't buy it.

Using a WD My Book Premium (discontinued model I think) 750gb here... USB 2.0 and FW400 (using FW connection). I caught Best Buy on sale for $149.00 last year and could not pass it up.
Fortunately, it does have the fast 750gb SATA drive inside it so it's a quick drive (same model I installed internally in my iMac). I benched it connected via USB 2.0 and FW400 and surprisingly, FW FTW by a decent amount. :D

That said... I still prefer building my own external setup. As many have mentioned, get to hand pick the components which is nice. There are some very sweet 2 drive raid boxes out there. Too bad the iMac does not have eSata. :(

500 GB WD studio Fw800. Sounds like a dishwasher when doing backups.

Luck of the draw:

Q: What kind of hard drive is inside a Western Digital external hard drive?

A: Depending on availability of parts during production, the internal hard
drive in an external enclosure could be either SATA or EIDE. As such,
we can only guarantee drive capacity and not a particular model, data
interface, or cache size in the external enclosure.

...a good reason to avoid "ready-made" external drives,

NewTech Guardian Maximus RAID1 enclosure, connected via FW800, using 2 750GB Barracudas works for my MP.

Use a bare bones (no HDD included) enclosure and then buy your own drive(s) based on good research and recommendations.

Well guys, my new hard drive seems to be working out ok. I think it is plenty fast, so I have no complaints about that... but I do feel like it is plenty loud. I've got it hooked up to the iMac via Firewire 800, but the cord that came with the hard drive is only about 2.5ft long, so I can't get the hard drive far enough away to make the sound 'bearable'.

It's making me wish I had a Time Capsule instead. What is everyone's first impressions on the speed of the Time Capsule? How about the effect it has on the wireless internet connection?
