Other Your iPhone keeps a detailed list of every location you frequent (without you knowing!)

That's not really new information. I've seen many Facebook/Twitter posts telling people they can check their cheating spouses location history by looking in that section. LOL.

I like leaving it on because it helps Siri suggest apps and what traffic will be during my normal drives.

That’s old news. The artist also explains what it’s used for and that the information lives on the device only.

The article is highly misleading in that it states that "Apple tracks and stores" this information but does not actually present any information suggesting Apple ever has access to it. Another statement in the article suggests that third-parties may have access to this information, but there similarly is no reason to think this is true. In fact, as the article elsewhere concedes, Apple has stated that the information is encrypted and stays on your phone. Business Insider is a sloppily-written publication, and this article is no exception.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to know about this feature, or to delete information you don't want another user of your phone to see, but nothing we actually know about this feature suggests it is "intrusive."

Agreed. Literally says on the Significant Locations settings page: "Significant Locations are encrypted and cannot be read by Apple."

I guess some folks can't accept Apple's word on this? That's kinda what the article suggests.

If it's encrypted and apple can't read it, then what useful purpose would it have? Of course Apple can read it and use it and obviously the data gets sent to them. Duh.

Been in iOS for ages now and its recently been changed so its hidden behind touch ID to get into it as well. As a CarPlay user its great when between this and my calendar i just get in the car, hook up the phone and it pretty much knows where i want to be going.

No idea why all of a sudden its a story and folk are pushing it as creepy again!!

See my post above, great for Maps being able to provide directions to where i want to go without me having to set it up is just one fairly major example of it working well.

I have this feature turned on since I got my xr in October but the history is always empty?

Guesswork at best. Common sense is to apply “in dubio pro reo “ until you can prove your claim.

Except they explicitly state they don’t, which means they’re liable if they do. Also, they have little if nothing to gain from doing so.

As per Apple, it’s called Significant Locations:

  • Significant Locations — Your iPhone will keep track of places you have recently been, as well as how often and when you visited them, in order to learn places that are significant to you. This data is encrypted and stored only on your device and will not be shared without your consent. It is used to provide you with personalized services, such as predictive traffic routing, and to build better Photos Memories.

Old news. Everyone does it, but Apple lets that data on your device (so Siri, Maps et al can access it for suggestions). Google however uploads that data into the cloud, and Lord knows what they're mapping with it. To each their own.

Exactly what I'm saying. Where's the "consent" button? There isn't one. The consent button is the button that turns the damn thing on. Wise up iPhone users.
