You mean you can't do split view with YouTube? What about Facebooks messenger app?

You can, but pretty useless when there are so few apps you can use it with.

I really wish developers would update their apps for these things. Google should have updated all of their apps by now for the new multitasking features, but still haven't.

Maybe if and when Apple adds split screen multitasking to the iPhone we'll finally see them on the iPad for most apps.

That's correct - you can't do split view right now with the YouTube app. You can slide over another app, but you can't enter split view.

Well that sucks, i hope google will update it fast.

If they haven't updated it to work with these features by now, I don't see them ever doing it. There must be some reason they're not...I'm curious why. Maybe they feel ad revenue would suffer?

Pixel C? i can see them waiting until Android gets native support until they update its compatibility for iOS. One things for sure there's no functional reason for why it hasn't been updated yet.

It is probably the same reason why you can't do push with gmail based accounts... Google and Apple hate each other... Maybe they will play better together after this DOJ case, since Google is standing behind Apple (at least they give the appearance that they are standing behind Apple).

The lack of PiP is really frustrating. I would use the youtube app more if it supported PiP or side by side mode. It's extra silly because if you directly play a youtube video within safari, PiP does work. So I find myself staying within safari rather than going out into youtubes own app.

As an aside, I'd also like Apple to add top/bottom multiview. If you're using an iPad Pro (or iPad Air) in portrait, having a widescreen video in the top half would be almost perfect. As it is now, left/right just doesn't work with most videos - you're just wasting too much space.

it is possible to use youtube as pip, when you use this site in safari http://ctrlq.org/youtube/pip/

There are a few third party apps (ProTube,YouPlayer, Tubex) which do offer this Slide Over/Split View, Picture in Picture (PiP) and even have other great features (play audio in background, remove ads - ProTube only). CornerTube, Moldavite only offer Picture in Picture (PiP).

My favorite is definitely ProTube.

Only problem with pro tube is that the UI is kinda ugly and the comments system is totally screwed up. You can't reply to comments and all you can see now is "shared by a user on google plus". Kinda ruins the YouTube experience when you can't see comments

Yep. I agree.

Still no ETA on fix. :(

The UI is much better then the YouTube app I think especially because it doesn't have the huge red bar on top of the videos, maybe not as good as other third party YouTube app indeed.

I never look at the comments within any video app. It does show the comments in ProTube but what is exactly the problem with it? The order of appearance of the comments?

I still hope that ProTube adds an option to remove all the standard categories which I don't use.
I also hate it that YouTube in general comes up with suggestion of channels which are so not related to my bookmarked channels. You can keep removing them but they come back each time within the YouTube app and website.

The main draw back is protube doesn't work with youtube's history feature. The 'history' in protube only shows what you watched in protube, not those you watched on other platforms. Without this, protube barely updates 'recommended' section.

Official YouTube app may NEVER support PIP because of YouTube red

I'm not convinced by the argument that YouTube will never support PiP because of ads.

Twitch has ads and their app supports Split Screen/Slide Over and PiP.

PiP doesn't stop ads from playing.

Ads have nothing to do with it. YouTube offers a subscription service called "YouTube Red" which they charge $10/month for. One of the features it offers is PiP on the iPad. So the YouTube iPad app DOES support PiP, but it is only enabled if you subscribe to YouTube Red.

Google also finally updated their "Inbox" app to support iPP resolution today! Great day for ap updates!

Oh: and Youtube DOES support PiP: just sign up for Youtube Red.
