I think 4K on YouTube only works on HDR videos such as this one (see the screenshot below) using VP9.2 codec which is used for HDR videos on YouTube. Unfortunately, they do not appear to support normal SDR 4K videos on iOS or iPadOS yet. At least, I couldn't get them to work yet on my iPhone Xs running iOS14 DP1.

PS: You probably need a HDR capable device to watch it.

I wouldn’t be holding my breath, several years later it still isn’t supported on the iPad.

Only way to get PIP now is to use YouTube’s mobile site, enter full screen, and hit the PIP button.

Funny how you can select 4K even when the device isn’t native 4K resolution, haha. There’s really no point in going past 1440, unless you’re using airplay to a 4K tv.

True still will take using it on safari for sure. I will use this everyday I reckon

Spilt screen would have been nice but I would use this more on iPad than phone. Use this everyday on my 12.9 pro
 
I predominantly downloaded the beta to try this out. A little sad that I haven’t been able to test it out yet. Wonder if I will be able to soon.
 
So guys? What’s the deal? There is 4k on ipad or no? :)

I have iOS 14 installed and the iPhone YouTube app works flawless but on the iPad Pro 2018 3rd generation, it only shows 1080p any reason why? I played the same video with latest YouTube app. I heard the 2020 iPad Pro can do it so why cant the 2018 one its basically the same

same issue 4k youtube not working on my ipad 7 after upgrading to ipad os 14 :(
