upandown,
I don't see Ublock origin on the App Store....(or its buried as a 'search' turns up everything but)...is that where you downloaded it from? 'Search' on the App Store is sometimes a joke....
Unfortunately it’s not available for Safari anymore. It’s an extension for Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Pale Moon. Always make sure it’s developed by Raymond Hill to ensure it’s not a fake.

For safari I use 1Blocker. It’s the only blocker I haven’t found evidence of nefarious intentions. Although I can’t prove they don’t leak user data, it’s the one I’ve chosen to trust over all others. (For safari)

UPDATE: I found out that this is a known problem with uBlock and to some extent uBlock Origin.

I also discovered that uBlock is a forked version of uBlock Origin that has been stripped down and made lighter (fewer filters and features). Anyway, I tried removing uBlock and installed uBlock Origin instead, and that seems to have done the trick. No more 'skip ads' notifications that I have to manually click off, or blank pages.

Thanks to everyone for their info and advice.

Yup. posted all over this thread, uBlock Origin is the adblocker to use.

I google it and the name of the browser.

uBlockO is available for all browsers except Safari which Apple restricts add-ons from tampering with the browser. I will mention this again, Chrome and Edge are going to implement something new very soon called Manifest V3 that will limit ad blocking and hence uBlock Origin. Therefor to enjoy ad-blocking switch to Brave browser as an alternative to Chromium based browsers.

For Safari I kind of like 1blocker and feel they are honest but there is also AdGuard for Safari which is basically the same thing for free. AdGuard for Safari I think is open source and that basically makes it the safer better adblocker. Not to hate on 1blocker developer, I think I will install it just out of support for the decent indie guys.

Also on iOS, there is no add-on ability to install ublock Origin but you can use Brave which has built in ad-blocker. Brave is an open source browser, safe, and privacy friendly.

I have uBlock which has worked great against any and all ads on youtube for at least 6 years. That is, until about two weeks ago.

Now I notice at the beginning of every video, the screen goes blank and I have to click off 'skip ads' in order to start playing the video. Then, at a random point during the video, the screen will go blank again with a notification countdown saying I can skip ads in 5 seconds.... which I have to click off to resume the video.

So it's not forcing me to actually watch the ads, it's just forcing me to manually click off the skip ad notification, something I've never had to do before. It's extremely annoying, especially when I am in engrossed in the middle of a video and the screen suddenly goes blank.

Does anyone know what is going on? Any workarounds? Or should I try a different ad blocker?
I use ublock origin and I have not seen any changes in ad blocking.

I use to put up with YouTube advertising until all of a sudden approx. 3 months ago, YouTube kept playing the same advertisement over and over every (approx.) 45 seconds. After seeing the "Aspen Dental" advertisement approx. 500 times, I searched for a blocker. The blocker worked for several weeks then all of a sudden I'm getting advertisements again. The only positive is that I don't get the "Aspen Dental" advertisement anymore. These advertisers need to rethink their advertising strategy. Because after seeing the same advertisement "Aspen Dental" over 500 times, I hate Aspen Dental to no end. I will NEVER EVER use their service if they were the last dentists on this earth. I hate Aspen Dental. I hope they go bankrupt. On top of that, they don't even have an location within 50 miles of me.

A former colleague who used them was extremely unhappy with them. Such as it is with chain dentists.

I have not had problems with ublock origin and YouTube. If I did have problems, I would download videos and watch them offline.

I've just dumped Safari for YT as it stopped loading comments months ago for some reason. You can see the first few but trying to expand the hidden comments just fails.

use ublock origin adblocker, if you are safari user then use AdGuard for Safari

Thanks all, recently started using FF, private window only and Total Cookie Protection with YouTube in order to limit Google's gross overreach on cookies but I was using AdGuard instead of Ublock Origin, now corrected.

I haven't had problems with ublock so this got my attention. Glad to see you resolved this.

I use Brave on iOS and I get a small add in the upper-left corner and it looks like just another video. I can live with that.

This is probably an unpopular comment. I do understand the annoyance of ads. The purpose of the ads is to provide funding for the platform. I personally don’t support the ”I want something for nothing brigade”. YouTube and websites like this forum survive by having adverts that support the platform. Ad blockers just deprive the platform of revenue and if everyone did it then you are going to see more subscriptions and paywalls. With YouTube, you have a choice, you can subscribe to premium to avoid the adverts. Just saying …
I will give you that, but the 300th time the same ad comes up for the same company who I do not care to do business with doesn't endear me to them (or YouTube).

Also, getting a 30 second ad or two for coming up every 2 minutes during a blues backing track I am trying to play along with isn't really helpful either.

And for a certain Texas power company trying to clean up their image after the ice storm debacle, do annoying ads persuade YOU to buy the product by popping up in the middle of anything you try to do like the digital equivalent to a Jack Russell Terrier?
