As of about 2 days ago, it started working again for me on every video and still does (just tried again). Go figure. I sure hope it stays this time!

YouTube for iOS is now at version 17.26.2 (was 17.14.2 when I started the thread back in April).
I’m a premium YT user myself. And what I’m curious about is how Youtube plans on using ads within PiP when they implement the PiP feature for non-premium YT users.

Because if non-premium YT users do not get ads when using PiP… I just might drop my premium account.

I don't see why the ads wouldn't play the same as they would when not in PiP mode for non-Premium users. But even if they didn't, I would personally still keep YT Premium for the background play feature (I use this every day to keep my phone locked while still hearing the video audio) as well as the ability to download videos for offline play.

Reason why I mention ads being played in PiP is the action of skipping ads and could ads be skipped in PiP mode?

Are you referring to the "trick" I've heard people talk about (though I never tried it myself) that if you drag the slider to the end of the video and then back to the beginning that the ads will be disabled?

PIP working again for me and I notice the option to turn it on and off is back in settings. Not sure what Google were up to but seems that for now at least they plan to keep supporting it
