Hi,

Note: Creating a separate thread because the 2 other threads make a general comment on Safari scrolling whereas I'm facing it only on YouTube website.

I have a 2019 iMac 21.5 inch and after updating to Big Sur, I am unable to scroll down freely on the YouTube site(by gesturing down in the mouse). Only pulling down the 'thin bar thingy' on the right corner of safari helps me get down the page smoothly. I don't find this problem in other websites.

I got my new M1 MacBook Air delivered just now - same problem in scrolling down comments in Youtube site.

Anybody else facing this? Is this a known Big Sur bug/any suggestions?

Note:
1. Both devices on 11.0.1
2. This issue is not there in Firefox browser; Scrolling down YouTube site is smooth.

Hi, I'm facing with the same problem. It's annoying as f. When I first update the Big Sur, there is no issue like this. But the last 2 days somehow this problem came up from nowhere.

PS: There is no extensions, 3rd party plug-in etc. I didn't even install any new application.

Hi, in another thread, forum user SmOgEr suggested trying Safari Technological preview version.
It can be installed parallel to current version of safari and YouTube site scrolling works fine in that.
So am hoping a future release of safari would fix the issue.

Yep, only within a video is scrolling borked for me. In this video, you'll see the page trying scroll until it reaches a certain 'threshold' point, then begins to scroll. It looks as if 'starting scrolling' is stuck at first, both ways. Using a Magic Mouse, if that's important.

No issues on any other website.

Same problem here - You Tube vs Mac mini (2018), Big Sur 11.0.1 (20B50), Magic Mouse.

The same issue has appeared to me (BS, Safari 14.0.1) just earlier and I have figured out that StopTheMadness app caused that problem. I had an option turned on that prevents webpages to mess with my scrolling and that was an issue. I have just created an exception for YT and its business as usual for me.

Same problem, Macbook pro 2020 Intel.

This is some major bug or memory leak in Big Sur, plenty of other topics about this.

I have this issue as well

Safari also sometimes hangs while opening a new tab, I only have 7-8 tabs open - on 8GB M1 MBA

I have the same problem as well in Catalina with the YouTube scrolling.

Firefox and Brave scrolls with no issue. And the temp goes way up when watching or just scrolling.

Running Big Sur on 2019 MBPr 15.6, 2020 MBPr16, 2020 MBPr13, 2017 iMac27 with no scrolling issues in Youtube or anywhere else. I use Brave Browser (95% time) and Safari.

Exact same thing for me

I found a workaround for this. Looks like google mess around with styling that made Safari unhappy.

Install Userscripts extension, add a new CSS with following content:
CSS:
// ==UserScript==
// @name        FixYouTubeScrolling
// @description Stop improper styling, Google
// @match       *://*youtube.*
// ==/UserScript==
ytd-page-manager {
  overflow-y: unset !important;
}

#page-manager.ytd-app {
  overflow-x: unset !important;
}

Save and refresh YouTube, you should now have Apple-like butter smooth scrolling.

This solution (i.e. changing the threshold to NULL) is functional. Thank you!

Hello!
Just want to ask can I run this script in Tampermonkey?
I'm getting this error

Should I modify some code so it will run?
Thank you for your effort!

This is css injection not Javascript that Tampermonkey expects.

But it should work by defining the CSS injection process as a function then apply it.

I did not test this with Tampermonkey(as it's not free for Safari), but the following should work, as it works on UserScript:
JavaScript:
// ==UserScript==
// @name        FixYouTubeScrolling
// @description Stop improper styling, Google
// @match       *://*youtube.*
// ==/UserScript==
const addGlobalStyle = (css) => {
    let head, style
    head = document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0]
    if (!head) { return }
    style = document.createElement('style')
    style.type = 'text/css'
    style.innerHTML = css
    head.appendChild(style)
}

addGlobalStyle('ytd-page-manager { overflow-y: unset !important; }')
addGlobalStyle('#page-manager.ytd-app { overflow-x: unset !important; }')

Sorry but I do not find how to add a script. Where to go ? To app extension on Safari ?

If you installed Userscripts extension, you should see an Icon besides your address bar:

Click that, and click the + button in the opened page, then click new CSS

Perfect! Works like a charm - thanks!
And... I learned about a cool extension I didn't know about - great morning so far! :)
