Do you have reading glasses / bifocals / progressive lenses? That should help a lot. Presbyopia is a biotch.
Trust me, I have explored all possibilities. I think it is possible to get the ZOOMED feature. I think Apple can do it. Thru accessibility zoom is possible, but it it too unwieldy to use on a regular basis. Apple can fix this. I hope they do.

The chance is zero that the X/XS will get Zoomed Display. The reason the X & XS don't have it is because there is no corresponding smaller resolution to zoom to.

The iPhone 6 can perfectly zoom to iPhone 5 resolution, so there is a zoom option.
The iPhone 6 Plus can perfectly zoom to iPhone 6 resolution, so there is a zoom option.
The iPhone XR can perfectly zoom to iPhone X/XS resolution, so there is a zoom option.
The iPhone XS can perfectly zoom to iPhone X/XS resolution, so there is a zoom option.

The iPhone 5 cannot perfectly zoom to iPhone 4s resolution, so there is no zoom option.
The iPhone X/XS cannot perfectly zoom to iPhone 8 or 8 Plus resolution, so there is no zoom option.

Interestingly, as mentioned, both the XR and XS zoom to the same iPhone X/XS resolution, but since the XR has a smaller screen than the XS, the effective amount of zoom is less on the XR.

Default text size on the X is larger than default text size on the 6s.

See my post here:

For both my wife and me, standard mode at 163 ppi on the 6s and XR gives text that is a bit too small for our preferences.

However, my wife likes XR zoomed mode at 148 ppi on the XR, but I prefer bigger text. I personally like the 138ish ppi you get in zoomed mode on my 7 Plus and on the XS Max.
I have been clicking around and have almost achieved the desired effect. 1.2 magnify under accessibility/zoom magnification. So I must respectfully disagree that it is not possible. We must INSIST that Apple fix this. It is a horrible oversight.

They could theoretically do zoomed display on the X but they won’t because it would be a bad idea. The math simply does not work. To do it, it would require Apple to introduce a new resolution to support, forcing all developers to account for that new resolution. This would be a big waste of time, since no iPhones actually natively support that resolution.

XR, here I come :(

To maximize zoom mode text size, the one to get the is the XS Max (or a Plus). Also, small text quality on the XS Max is better than on the XR, although a lot of people wouldn't notice the difference. My wife doesn't notice.

I bought my XR in part to get longer battery life AND zoomed display. It really makes my iPhone 7 looks tiny.

The XS Max could be an option but between the higher price (ugh!), the lack of a better camera (than XS) and not so great battery life... I picked the cheaper option and I am really glad I did.

That's why I got the XR for my wife and nothing for myself.

The XR's zoomed text size is perfect for my wife, and the 326 ppi screen is fine for her. She was coming from a 6s so it was about time she upgraded, esp. since using zoom mode on a 6s really reduces the effective screen real estate, and she preferred bigger text than the default non-zoomed text size on the 6s.

For me, I wanted bigger zoomed text size, and I prefer the higher pixel density screens of the OLED and Plus iPhones. However, since the XS Max is horrendously expensive, I decided to just keep my iPhone 7 Plus at least another year. I could even consider keeping the 7 Plus until 2020. The 3 GB RAM in the 7 Plus seems to help keep it running smoothly.

Nothing smoother than this new A12... just amazing how the interface flows... I'm amazed how they switched away from the home button and actually enhanced the interface (going back and forth between apps, etc) just a swipe... a real joy to use.

Have my new IPP using the same gestures... simply great !

I have sent back the XS. Two reasons, maybe 2.5. One: small icons. Makes zero sense with a bigger screen. Two: It is substantially heavier than my 7. 2.5: The size is borderline where I need two hands to use it. I can do one hand with my 7. My 7 lives! Best phone ever! I MAY try the 8, as it is the same size.

Then perhaps the pending rumored iPhone 12 mini’s smaller resolution explains why my iPhone X suddenly has support for Display Zoom?

@EugW Are you able to update this with iPhone 12 ? Your post made so much sense then. I now see that what I get as display zoom on iPhone 12 is much better on what we got on iPhone XR even though it is same screen size. So something must have changed.

I never got iPhone X and got iPhone XS Max. I would like to go back to iPhone 12 based on what I see is a comparable/better display zoom but not sure how it works.

Thank you !

Points per inch numbers indicate text size: The biggest numbers have the smallest text:

5/SE Standard mode: 163
6/7/8 Standard mode: 163
XR Standard mode: 163
Plus/X/Max Standard mode: 153-154

5/SE have no Zoomed mode
X/XS have no Zoomed mode

XR Zoomed mode: 148
6/7/8/Plus/Max Zoomed mode: 138-139

Why?

Cuz the XR is essentially a smaller version of the Max, with the same amount of information displayed on screen. So, in Zoomed mode, the text needs to be smaller to fit on screen. Think iPad mini vs iPad, but not to that extreme extent.
