As some of us had thought, no 10.15 for MP5,1. Support starts with MP6,1.

Apple now blocks MacPro5,1 from running 10.15:

Can't say it's shocking. CPU is likely one of the main issues. Lack of microcode updates and EOL'd by Intel makes it kind of dead on arrival.

Somehow my late 2013 MBP11,3 will outlive my mid 2012 MP5,1 with OS support. Never would have guessed that in 2014. Time to evaluate in the next few weeks path forward. The MP7,1 looks great for expansion and everything except starting price point...

Yeah not surprising considering Intel ended support for the CPUs and we have the 5,1’s true successor now. I’m glad my 2012 MBP will get the new OS.

Same laptop here and also glad it's still on the list for OS update... My 5.1 is a great machine and eventually the 7.1 will be on the used market for those of us with shallow pockets.

Still, I'd say a leeeetle bit surprising, since we have gotten such a flurry of recent upgrades via firmware, recommended GPU options for Mojave, etc. Seems a bit strange to kinda get a "bump" for one OS rev like that and then already dead on the next one...

This is a bummer to be sure. I had a feeling Mojave was going to be the last release we'd officially see. I'm hoping this can be hacked on top of our existing 5,1's. The hardware should be able to support it.

If not, maybe I'll sell my 4,1 and grab a Mac Mini. It's honestly enough power for me.

Yeah, there’ll no doubt be savings on used & refurbished ones by this time next year. Maybe some sale prices by the holidays too. Time to start saving. :)

Apple still send High Sierra firmware updates to Macs that don't run Mojave. Maybe we will see more MP5,1 firmware upgrades yet.

Perhaps Apple started to require AVX support, if the kernel needs it, I doubt that we will see 10.15 on MP5,1.

Edit: Catalina DP1 and DP2 still works with MP5,1.

Pretty clear the MP5,1 tower was being used in at least some capacity for at least PCIe testing with macOS when developing MP7,1.

Do wonder if the lack of Intel microcode updates from this point forward for MP5,1 (and older) issued CPUs played any factor in the decision. Apple could easily say they intended to support MP5,1 for one more OS but due to Intel they are not. Good on Apple to at least be semi-transparent with availability and starting prices for those looking to early adopt MP7,1. This makes the decision for the holdouts a little more difficult.

Perhaps.

How much do you think I can get for a 4,1 Mac Pro? I'd say at least $300

We will have to either "hackintosh" it or better yet use virtualization Hypervisor 1 and fake the CPU using different SMBIOS and passthrough the PCIE cards.

...Any chance Apple did not bother to specify the "Metal capable GPU required" part on their webpage ?
This answer any doubts about it:

How do I go about that? Got 2015 MBP and 5,1 to my disposal
The URL is not public and I'm not going to post it here, but you should find it easily.

El Cap was getting some firmware updates until mid 2018, so there is hope for holdouts, at least for a time.

I'm sure there will be some hack or workaround for those interested, but this is the end of OFFICIAL latest Apple OS support for MP5,1. Likely can get regular security style updates through 2021 or 2022 if you choose not to hack machine ID.

All mid-2012 and later Macs support AVX except for MP5,1. If Apple requires it, will be a whole new game.

10.15 DP1 still works with MP5,1 Xeon, read here:

MP5,1: Catalina works, more or less…
