Can't say it's shocking. CPU is likely one of the main issues. Lack of microcode updates and EOL'd by Intel makes it kind of dead on arrival.

Somehow my late 2013 MBP11,3 will outlive my mid 2012 MP5,1 with OS support. Never would have guessed that in 2014. Time to evaluate in the next few weeks path forward. The MP7,1 looks great for expansion and everything except starting price point...
I mean, it's been a great run. I don't know how many Apple products ran for a full decade. MP5.1 + Snow Leopard was a perfect match of great hardware and great software.

happy to report that all I needed was the -no_compat_check boot arg

hopefully it stays this easy!

(I was booting from my MBP9,1 in TDM, so i did not have to patch the installer etc)

luckily as it currently stands AVX is not a requirement, but as this is a beta everything is subject to change sadly

It will be interesting to see if MP3,1 can boot it.

Have you tested all the built-in apps and utilities ? maybe the new music app requires AVX ;)
What about support for the "not supposed to be present" devices like the original Wifi module ?

im hoping its like the MP1,1/3,1 situation, where despite other unsupported macs needing a multitude of patches

all the unsupported MPs needed was either a boot.efi file or the -no_compat_check boot arg :)
Past releases show that the first one or two DPs have the most compatibility, but as the beta goes on…

10.8 with X3100 64bit driver is a classic example.

With the exception of the first 10.14 DP that had less compatibility than advertised as it did not work on 5,1 MP's

Apple clearly warned at the time that Mojave will be later supported on mid-2010/mid-2012 Mac Pros with METAL supported GPUs, this time is different.

MAYBE don't publicize the install workaround too much right now...
It's the same as ever.

No problem at all, all MP5.1 users can buy the new tower... oh wait. They had 5.1 because was cheap.
If you want all the features of your $500 used Mac Pro 5,1 in a supported tower, Apple has a solution: buy the $6,000 Mac Pro.

Dropping support for the Mid 2012 5,1 is the stupidest thing Apple has done since Mountain Lion killed support for the 1,1 Mac Pro. I'm really getting sick of the forced obsolescence tactics on Mac.

Well had the most recent Intel CPU sh!tshow not happened I think Apple very well would have supported it. I think that's the only model they dropped between Mojave and Catalina, and recent tradition is that they only drop Macs from the compatibility list every other year.

Intel is not issuing microcode updates to mitigate these latest vulnerabilities on ANY CPU that could be installed in a MacPro5,1. And I don't think it has been definitively stated that disabling hyperthreading fully cures those CPUs from the threat. Therefore, my hunch is that Apple wanted to send the signal that it's not safe to use these machines (at least, not connected to the internet) going forward.

I'm sad and bummed about it too, but I also sorta see where Apple is coming from here. My ire is really with Intel here, as they are making the choice to obsolete a ton of perfectly good silicon that has otherwise has plenty of usable life in it.
