Used my mini retina today. To setup just to use as a music player with Apple Music connected to our sound bar. Wow it feels so old all of a sudden. Plus I kept trying to use the pencil :)

Although the new ProMotion is great, the dpi is way old. Very pixelated on the ipad pro close up

Putting my ipad mini next to the new pro puts it to shame where thr sharpness is concerned. Plus the animations for the UI seem a bit less stuttery on my mini. Its unusual, like the pro is dropping frames already

Gotta agree that although I am thoroughly satisfied and impressed, I still have the lingering disappointment in the back of my head that they didn't go full monty and do the 12.9" 2732x2048 on this thing. It would have been the ultimate icing on the cake. Although I completely understand why they didn't, as they would probably sell only about a third the number of 12.9" machines if they'd done that...even though it would have been better for everyone, developers and users, IMHO...

I'm the opposite, it was a relief that they kept the same dpi as the mini gets a little tiring over time with the finer elements of the UI. I do hope that more developers start embracing the new screen resolution though and it would be nice if Apple started to make better use of the increased space on the screen on both the 10.5 and 12.9.

I'm wondering if that is something that might be addressed a bit with the new dock structure and all with iOS 11. They definitely could use some work on utilizing that screen space. Lot of potential here.

You know what I find fascinating through all these iPad threads? Is how many forum members are considering or have considered of selling their MacBook/MacBook Pros to go full on desktop with the new iPad Pro's. This is Cooks vision as he stated and clearly it's working considering the new hardware and iOS 11 in the fall.

It's happening. I've been considering it. Unlike Microsoft who thought they could do it with a big bang, Apple is taking the evolutionary approach. It's slowly getting there, but not quite yet. I'm sill ultimately looking to ditch my MacBook Air.

the mini is a device mostly used by young people, with good eyes. Bringing that kind of UI to their flagship iPad, IMHO, would have been a terrible mistake. I'm 30 and, although my eyes are still pretty good, using the mini makes them feel very tired very quickly.

And honestly, it just makes sense...different sizes, different resolutions: the mini thing was mainly a workaround used back when iOS and iOS apps were tied to a set of fixed resolutions. Nowadays, luckily, things are much more flexible and apps are able to adapt and don't need to be rewritten to accommodate new resolutions

That and the Mini was Apple's response to the explosion of mini-sized Android and eBook readers. Guess they've stopped updating those, leaving the current Mini 4 still a worthy tablet in the 8' space.

I'm in my early 30s and my eyes just aren't good enough these days, so I sold my Mini 2 for iPad Pro.

Overall it's great. Worth the purchase.

Only complaints:

  • No 3D Touch
  • No raise to wake
  • Speakers seem weaker than my old 9.7. Will be discussing this with Apple before my 14 days is up.

Well, I bit the bullet and picked up 64GB 10.5 iPad Pro. Funny thing is, as I'm waiting for them to get my iPad out from the back, I was playing with the 10.5 and 12" iPads and I started to question my choice, the 10.5 looked diminutive in comparison to its bigger brother. I took it home, and realized it was larger but not too large, so I think overall I'm happy with the size. I ordered the Pencil but it wasn't instock at the Market Street Apple store so its getting shipped. I'll have to wait for that.

Here's my thoughts, though I've only used it a little last night and a little today.

Screen - the more I look at it, the more gorgeous it is. Tack sharp, unbelievable clarity and crispness. I am finding it to be a bit of a fingerprint magnet. My kids were using it earlier today and I couldn't believe how much finger prints ended up on it.

Performance, very fast, everything is snappy and animations/scrolling is buttery smooth.

Size - this is a big jump for me, given that my iPad of choice for these past few years has been an iPad Mini and I'm still adjusting to the size. The bezels are small on the side so, I'm having to adjust how I hold it. Hand fatigue set in a little bit last night, though I'll probably figure out what works and what doesn't

I ordered a nice Jtech case, that will arrive a week from Monday (amazon was out of stock). If I find something better or comparable, I'll cancel that order and get the other.

Overall I'm very happy with the purchase, its been several years since I took the plunge and bought an iPad. I'm heavily tempted to install iOS 11 on it, so I can get the full benefit of its power.

Questions for the 9.7inch upgraders:

How much of an improvement overall would you rate it? 20%? 30? I am basically hesitant to upgrade unless it's more than 30% but I would love the extra storage and speed..

I’d give it a 40%. The A10X improves what already was a monster. The screen is pleasantly and “quietly” bigger. It doesn’t look it at first glance, but once you actually start doing your day-to-day on it, it feels more immersive. Screen looks sharp and buttery smooth. Due to the smaller bezels its size doesn’t have an overwhelming presence. Admittedly, it’s borderline too much for me. Portability is a top concern in all my device purchases. Overall, I don’t regret my purchase. Now the sleeve on the other hand, can’t justify keeping it. Make my own pouch for that cost

I have to agree here. I didn't expect such a small physical difference to look so much different. I think part of it is just that it's physically bigger, but I also think the minuscule bezels create a sense of "more space, less waste". The ProMotion screen is absolute witchcraft. I have no idea how they make this stuff happen while keeping battery life the same as before. And I really don't think I need 4 GB of RAM on an iPad right now, but in the not so distant future, it's going to be a necessity.

Also, on the old Smart Keyboard, I felt like I had to angle my hands in a bit to type on it correctly. On this new one, I can type at a more natural angle. Though I will admit that the keyboard is the item that I think feels least upgraded. I already loved the 9.7" keyboard and had no problem typing as fast as I do on my full sized Magic Keyboard on my Mac. So the 10.5" Smart Keyboard is just what I already loved but slightly bigger and more comfortable.

Lol “Absolute witchcraft”. I just became the awkward guy in the room laughing hysterically for what seemed like no reason. ProMotion is amazing. On the first scroll I could see the difference. Amazing.

All the iPads will support iOS 11s multitasking. What the person was referring to was the amount of useable apps that can be used while multitasking. If you’re in split view and pop up a third app, it renders both of those split view apps unusable until you close it. On the pro 2s (and 12.9 gen 1) all 3 apps will remain open and useable simultaneously. Not really a big deal but is a slight limitation when compared to the new ones and 12.9 gen 1.

For what it’s worth, on my 10.5 iPad Pro I can have three active windows and a Pip at the same time. Pretty amazing.

The speakers seems to be of talk abut how they are bit measuring up to the 9.7 Pro. Some have speculated the placement.

3D Touch I believe will eventually be a feature on the iPad. However, it would require placement for the Haptic Engine. Also, Tim Cook quotes the implementation of 3D Touch was difficult for the iPhone 6s, which would lead me to believe some other significant changes would be needed internally to make this happen.

My thoughts/trying out the new features:
2 very short clips:

All good so far. Very smooth, although using the beta on ios11 means not all apps (flipboard) work well
