With the education apple event next week, and maybe announcing a cheaper 9.7 iPad with pencil functionality, but not pro somehow (no ASK connection port? Trimmed down from P3 screen like the 9.7 last year being more like air 1 than pro or even air2) I got to thinking we’re almost at the year mark fo the 2017 pro iPads, 10.5 and 12.9

How do you feel about it? Gonna stay put this year?

I’m really happy with my 12.9 gen 2 and think ill be staying put

Especially bc i have ASK and pencil

If i have to upgrade either of those, this endeavor gets even more expensive since I wouldn’t wanna forego them
Hoping Apple updates the 10.5 iPad Pro tomorrow. I'd really like to upgrade my Air I.

Had the 12.9 and then went to the 10.5 when it came out. Tried the 12.9 gen 2 and gave it back within a day. Too big, and at that size I'd rather carry a MacBook.

As for the 10.5, its my daily go-to for nearly everything. I'm a fan on the Apple Keyboard, use it for VDI at work (Windows 10 touch screen works surprisingly well). Honestly hoping for FaceID, but it's plenty fast. The only downside is the battery does seem to go faster than previous iPads. It really could be just me and heavy use too.

Love, love, love my 12.9— it completely replaced a traditional computer for me. I won’t be upgrading it. BUT, I want to upgrade my Air 2 to a 10.5 or equivalent. I use the two individually and also in conjunction with each other, for overlapping but somewhat different purposes. I’d love to add pencil and keyboard support to something Air 2-sized (i.e. purse-sized), for running around town or for travel where I don’t plan to work much but want the capability to work or write a long email in case I need to. If I’m going to work a lot, I will probably always prefer the 12.9 size. Big screen is niiiiiiiiiiice.

I have been using a 10.5" for about 8 months, and think it is a terrific piece of hardware but that is hindered by its OS, which is still just a glorified smartphone operating system.

Performance-wise, I have absolutely no complaints with my 512GB Pro 12.9 (2017) and 256GB Pro 9.7 (2016). Considering upgrading the Pro 9.7 to a higher capacity model (still 10" class) but I don't wish to lose TouchID so may end up getting last year's 512GB Pro 10.5.

I'm probably going to sell off my 12.9 (2017) and pick up the new cheap one. I thought I'd use the Pencil/Pro features more, but I don't use the iPad for much more than eBook reading and gaming.

Having 12.9 2017 one. Not a single regret - I’m rocking it with ASK and pencil, so pretty much full house. For me it ticks all the boxes. No intent to move to anything else.

Lol, I only bought mine for the screen size and storage capacity, not the Pro features. The screen size is really great for comics (can easily read even the doublepage spreads in landscape). :p

Kinda regret getting my 10.5 at this point. The only reason I use it nowadays is for taking notes in class. Besides it being nice that all my notes are in the cloud and the iPad is lighter than the notebooks I carry, I actually prefer taking notes on paper and miss it now. Any work I need to get done, I use my laptop. Any quick researching or media consumption is now fulfilled by my phone, which has a large screen and a better screen than the iPad.

I always said that after iPad 4, I'd never get an iPad again because it wouldn't be used for much. Then, I fell in the trap and now I'm having an iPad that's barely being used... again. Such a waste.

I am in a similar position using the 12.9 for school, I use the iPad to organize weekly assignments (compiling class PDFs and then drafting my responses before exporting that to my iMac). Otherwise, I use it for drawing, reading comics, light surfing and movie consumption. I use it more than my iPhone though. For me, the ASK was a waste of money. I also thought I would not buy another iPad after the Mini 4 and many times I wish I did not buy the 12.9 or my 7+, but lesson learned.

I can’t wait for an X style iPad and will grab one ASAP.

10.5 iPP is the best iPad I've owned. It's the best "multi tasking" iPad so far but the software still needs work. I got it for a deal during the holidays so obviously my experience will be skewed than if I had paid full retail price.

I too will be grabbing one ASAP!!! I have the 10.5 and love it but I know I’m going to be tempted by that new design!! And it will be nice to have the upgraded speed and whatever other upgrades they decide to throw in there, if nothing else then just to future-proof it...

Had my 10.5" for about 6-7 months now and it has replaced my old, slow HP laptop. I only fire that up anymore for full iPhone backups via iTunes. I have slowly learned how to migrate things to iCloud and access them via the Files app. Daily, I use iMessage and FB Messenger for communication with friends and family; using both apps side by side on iPad is great. I've also forced myself (but in a positive way) to learn Pages and Numbers to get away from Word and Excel. I'm very happy overall, but if Apple creates it's next round of iPads to include the new gold color that is my iPhone 8 Plus and Apple Watch Series 3, then the OCD in me may try to figure out how to get one and sell my current rose gold iPad Pro. ;)

I pretty much called it, a new iPad with air1 display like the 2017 iPad, pencil compatibility, and of course A10.

I’d still want a 10.5” on sale with that A10x over the 2018 iPad 9.7

And maybe slight speed aside (who knows? My 9.7 pro is still on iOS 10 too— a9x vs a10), my 9.7 pro is still superior to it

I expect the biggest feature is the $329 price point (likely less when retailers start discounting). If I had to buy an iPad now, I'd actually opt for this instead of the Pro 9.7 (except, of course, 128GB isn't enough for me). I'm still hoping for a Pro 10.5 326 ppi with TouchID but I don't think I'm gonna get my wish. :(

If I'd waited, I probably would have tried this new 2018 iPad. I'll have to play with one at the Apple store the next time I go. As a replacement for my mom's iPad 2? It's perfect.

I have hesitations especially since no promotion or laminated screen and less RAM, but who knows? It could very well wind up being my replacement for the 7+ if Apple announces an SE2.

The iPad 2 didn't have a laminated display, either, although it used thicker glass so the screen didn't feel as "plasticky" as the Air/5th gen display. But yes, the 2018 iPad should be quite a nice upgrade from iPad Air or older.

I have all current iPads and iPad Pros. All I could say is that iPad Pro simply is the best. I love the screen and the speed of the iPad Pro. Nothing else beats iPad (on the tablet side of things). However, i am thinking to return my iPad Pro 10.5 inch and getting the MS Surface 4 (The one with Core M) processor, currently running 600 dollar (including keyboard, Surface Pen). Still debating about it, I have until May to return my Costco Purchased iPad Pro 10.5.

As somebody that has owned many Surface devices I can honestly say......."DONT DO IT".

If you think you are getting the best of both worlds with the Surface (laptop and tablet), please think again. You are getting a mediocre laptop and terrible tablet.

Exactly. I really like my 10.5 IPP, but the way Safari defaults to mobile format and doesn't even give an option for defaulting to desktop is primo annoying. And the management interface on IOS is terrible for a large screen device. Just awful.

The hardware is great, though. I can't see moving to any other tablet than this one in that respect.

It is lunacy the default to desktop lack of.

I’ll give ya that

And how hard would it be to add a “magic iPadmouse” accessory too?

Like the magical Pencil. Give people options.

I have the 2nd gen 12.9 and have actually just been toying recently with going to a 10.5. I can’t honestly say why, other than the fact that while I LOVE the 12.9 as a computer replacement, I just don’t use it as a portable device. It pretty much sits on my table and gets used with the ASK, and I use my 8+ otherwise.

I think if I had a smaller iPP, I might get more use out of it overall, but I’m concerned I’d miss my screen!

Decisions, decisions.
