100 reasons to not buy the nmpro

The lack of worthy Mac Pro since a long time plus my Mac Pro rev 1.1 pushed artificially to obsolescence by new OS not compatible, are why I'm considering to buy the new mac pro, despite there's certainly a billion reasons to not do it and finally switch fully on Windows side.

So I wonder if the forum couldn't help build the list. It's not simple or fully objective because it can depends of the context, usage and user. But anyway.

1 - Too expensive up to be ridiculous.
2 - Just one crap internal drive with a ridiculous capacity.
3 - Shutdown button in the back, probably the first computer to ever do such idiot thing.
4 - Forced 2 graphic card and no clue it will ever be really useful a day, just vague possibilities.
5 - No dvd drive.
6 - A box supposed to be put on your desk as if it was more handy than under the desk, ridiculous.
6 - No delivery date engagement.

....
 
I love my 6c nMP.

My homebuilt 4930k Win8.1 machine is faster and cost half as much and has the legacy connectors and internal drive space I could ever want.

Do what you need to do.

1 - Most pro's can afford it!
2 - Amazingly fast drive! so not crap
3 - yea a bit silly but moving your hand an extra 6.6 inches is not to hard, Try it!
4 - 2 GPU's are already useful!
5 - This is just getting silly, havent used a DVD for 3 years! if u need one you can buy for £18 I bet you complained when they got rid of floppy.
6 - ridiculous comment!!! - it's now mobile I could put this in my rucksack and take to work, your missing the point.
6 - you wrote 6 twice! it's taking 6-7 weeks deal with it!

basically there a lots of reason why to buy one. If it's not for you buy an imac!

+1 It's an amazing machine, not perfect, but it's the best Mac ever.

Hmmm I am unsure what you call it the best Mac ever. The choice of going ATI GPU puts off a great deal of potential buyers. Then again, having one proprietary internal drive (though SSD) also can put off some people. The computer may be small but by the time you add all the externals, the footprint grows rapidly.

I think using the wind tunnel approach (not really innovative since there have been several GPU/CPU type of fan systems on the PC side over the years) is a nice approach.

IF* Apple had offered the following - they may have had a larger population of people purchase the Mac (mini) Pro -

Choice of ATI or NVidia (even if NVidia would cost more)
Choice of either 2 drives and one GPU or as is - 2 GPU and one drive


While the above may not seem like much to some, it would have reached a far broader audience. As someone dealing with photo work, I would have opted for a single NVidia and 2 drives. Several graphics and video programs can't presently take advantage of ATI / open CL which was a huge hit.

While the nMP presently is not for me, I still have hopes that either Apple or third party will address some of the challenges above.

Sounds like someone wants one but any afford it so s/he is trying to convince himself why it "sucks"...
 
I recommend registering at YouTube, watching some of the Unboxing and Review and Comparison videos of the new Mac Pro, and get yourself involved in the lusty debates below the videos.

You will feel much better, and more people will be on your side, though for other reasons, mostly lack of knowledge.
 
Well, when you assess the worthiness of something with adjectives such as "ridiculousness" and "crap", I can imagine the weight you must think your 6 item list of "100 reasons not to buy the nmpro" carries. I mean, why bother explaining why the internal drive is "crap"?

Change your thread title to "6 reasons I do not like the new mac pro & please help me find 94 other reasons." It will be a bit more accurate.
 
I think the word obsolete (or obsolescence in this case) is way over used in the computer and cellphone industry.

Just because a newer version will come out months down the road the current version doesn't stop doing what it was designed to do. Just because you no longer want the computer because you want the latest and greatest. It's only obsolete to a small minority of people with some sort of obsessive compulsive disorder to have the latest version of everything.

If the current nmpro fits your needs buy it, if it doesn't wait for a version that does.

Thank goodness it's so unappealing. Shipping dates would be June instead of April if anyone actually liked it. :rolleyes:

Tell that to my pismo powerbook that used to work on the internet but now that software has changed it won't load crap plus its stuck on OSX 10.4. I really hate when people use this argument because its lame.

A computer that is nearly 20 years old may be obsolete. My argument still stands. There is no ways a computer is obsolete in the first few years minimum.
 
In the past computer speeds would double / storage capacities would double and RAM etc. would do too.

This is still the case today, but except for storage most of the increase is hardly noticed. I mean, back in the days any upgrade from a 133Mhz Pentium to a 450 Pentium II was massive. The same goes for RAM speeds.

But today you can still work on a 2008 MacPro with 8GB RAM if you bought SSD's.

It's still usable.

I believe that computer speeds will continue to go up due to more complex multicore designs and special purpose chips like CUDA, but for most daily work you can still get away with a machine that is a few years old.

I think we are at an interesting juncture where even smartphones don't need to double in speed anymore. Power consumption and interesting sensors are far more important.

His Windows PC crashed after he typed the first 7 reasons. You can see it starting to go wrong when he has two number 6 reasons instead of a 6 and 7. Clearly word processing is beyond his PC. :)
 
The Mac Pro isn't crap but it's not for everybody. Where's the anti troll spray ;) I kid, your opinion isn't crap but it isn't the same as everybody elses :p

Don't forget the classic compact Macs... they all had a power switch in back. And, as mentioned, iMac and Mac Mini. Frankly, I don't see a need for a power button on the front; I haven't touched my Mini's power button in months.

The nMP is very new. You'll have to drop some of these outdated concepts in order for it to make sense to you. Otherwise, build a PC and enjoy your DVDs and serial ports.
