The real reasons not to buy a new Mac Pro

This is a silly, troll-baiting thread, but there are only three main reasons not to buy a nMP.

1. You don't need it. Don't try to talk yourself into it. Look at those benchmarks again. That maxed out iMac for that price point is looking pretty good right now.

2. You can't afford it. Looking hard at those financing options? If you can't pay it off or can't see how it benefits you financially, don't buy it. Also, if you're thinking of hiding the real cost from a spouse, don't. I know from experience.

3. It's not for you. Whatever you do, you don't need all that the nMP offers. You may have no use for a second graphics card, or the configuration just doesn't work for you. Maybe you have nightmares about daisy-chaining devices all over your desk. Whatever the case, it's just not for you.

Those are the three major reasons not to buy one. If you want to complain that it looks like a trashcan, that it's too expensive, that it doesn't come in different colors, those are not really valid complaints. This is for professionals, and the thing could look like a giant dildo and people would still use it if they needed it. Everything else is secondary to those three reasons.

Huh? You joined MR two weeks ago, made a total of eight posts, five of which roughly concern the nMP you ordered in January. Who's the troll again?

So having few posts on this Forum means that one does not know what one is talking about?

The whole post, not just the sentence that was lifted out of context, seems to me to be a well reasoned discussion of the topic...posted by a newbie or not.

Having read some posts by members with thousands of posts, I would suggest longevity on the Forum is no guaranty of wisdom.

+1 It's an amazing machine, not perfect, but it's the best Mac ever.

Does it have a built in battery, monitor, and keyboard which allows me to use it on an airplane? By some definition of "better," portability is key. I guess it sucks then! Macbook Pro is the best ever

And what if your definition of "better" is gaming? Well my Hexcore 5,1 Mac Pro with dual GTX780 in SLI will mop the floor with the nMP. I guess the nMP sucks then!

And what if your definition of "better" is PCIe expansion, the ability to swap video cards, add a 4 port Mini SAS controller, upgrade the GPU (as above), have greater than 1TB of Internal storage, run more than 64GB RAM.... Then I guess it sucks!

"best mac ever".... when you're comparing it to what is basically a machine that Apple has been neglecting since 2009, ignore the ability to upgrade the video cards, and put emphasis on the niche things it does well... then yes, have your "best" moniker--just don't forget your mountain of qualifiers.

Please.

Knowing what one is talking about and trolling are two very different things.

No DVD drive? But however will I play movies mastered with the state of the art technology of the 90s on my multi thousand dollar pro computer!

I mean, I could buy an external drive, but c'mon, why should I have to do that for such high end technology?

I went through the same thing when my new car didn't come with a tape player, and boy, I was mad about that too.

Yes multi thousand dollar *Pro* computer that should include a free external dvd burner for that price. With a computer having Pro in the name it should be able to do a lot especially still being able to burn cds and dvds.

MacBook Pro can only be said to be the best notebook computer up to today.

Gaming is not what the nMP is designed for. Even an oMP was not optimal for gaming.

You can still swap video cards if you want when Apple or 3rd-parties make them available since you will be able to exchange boards. 128 GB RAM can be put into the nMP when appropriate 32 GB RAM modules are available.

Apple is to be blamed on this.

I'm sorry, did you just attempt to tell somebody what they value and don't value? You must be a keynesian economist! Value is subjective, my friend. Saying something is "best" without qualification, especially when it has markedly different characteristics than something else is as silly as it is juvenile.

Laptops are outselling desktops, I dare say they will continue to do so even after the nMP is widely available. Is everyone an idiot? Don't they KNOW that the nMP is "the best" computer ever? Why are they buying a computer that's not as good? Is your name Phil Schiller?

Gaming is not what the nMP is designed for. Even an oMP was not optimal for gaming.

This is just a cop-out. You claimed this was "the best." I love gaming, if I think it's the most important thing I can do with a computer and there's a computer that can do it better and cheaper, therefore guess what? The nMP is not "the best."

Again, "best" is an arbitrary term. Especially with the nMP, there are a heap of qualifiers.

You can still swap video cards if you want when Apple or 3rd-parties make them available since you will be able to exchange boards.

Oh really? Is anyone even talking about making 3rd party boards? OWC's CEO off-hand shrugged off the idea.

Here is the last time Apple made a "replaceable" custom PCB GPU. It's from a Beige G3. You want to guess how many 3rd parties made a replacement?

128 GB RAM can be put into the nMP when appropriate 32 GB RAM modules are available.

Again: Source?

Didn't you hear? Professionals no longer burn media. Nor do they use BluRay Technology. If you need an optical drive, you're not a professional--this is one of the litmus tests people on this forum use to distinguish between "professionals" and the unworthy. /s

On a side note, if they started including DVD drives with the nMP, it would be hilarious. They might as well start including Thunderbolt PCIe chassis and external Hard drive arrays. Before long, that whole "compact design" myth would really come into focus.

Ah, poor guys at Apple. They think they are going to sell lots of nMPs and MBPs, without an optical drive. What a bunch of losers.

So, let me add to the "Bury the nMP" crusade, with more reasons for not to buy nMP:
- It has no analog RGB monitor support

- It has no RS232 port (omg, what are you doing Apple ? Where am I going to connect my dot matrix printer for my professional DTP needs ? )

- It has no floppy drive

- (enter your own reasons like incompatible with amiga, spectrum and amstrad computers and many other professional features)

Bottom line: If you are a professional and you want to have the...hm...latest and greatest: Invest your money on a discontinued old Mac Pro.
