The XS is a much better deal. Anybody here that says they would rather pay $1,000 for the X over the same for the XS is crazy.
My whole point went right over your head. Of course if they were both offered at the same time anybody would buy the XS over the X.
My point is I’ve already used my $1000 phone for almost a year and the new one isn’t that much better for the same price so there’s no need to buy the new one for another grand. Therefore I’m getting 2 good years out of my one time $1000 investment and I don’t feel I’m missing out on anything by sticking with it for another year.

For me, it was quite simple:
256gb XS RRP = AUD$1879 (US$1343.30)
256gb X RRP = AUD$1829 (US$1307.55)

I Ended paying AUD$1385 (US$990.14) for a new 256gb X. I personally can't justify the AUD$500 between the two models, the upgrade to me coming from a 64gb 6s is marginal whether it is an X or an XS. Also still managed to sell my 6s for $300 makes it a no-brainer. The fact of it is this 's' refresh is really lacking compared to the 5 and 5s, or the 6 and 6s. Honestly, there are so many great deals out there on the X it's hard to justify the XS.

Whoever buys the XS will also get a better phone and enjoy the same thing for 2 two years. The S cycle has always made more sense to buy.

My friend has bought X last year. Now I will have XS. I got better, newer generation phone in nicer color.
Deals at the carriers were also much better than last year (in the UK). Last year offers were madness.
I skipped the X, we were all speculated that this year will be S realize. And I prefer all of my S iPhones rather than originals. They have longer, better support, better CPU-s and if the first model had like antenna gate (4) or bend gate (6) they fixed it in S cycle.

And the best deal for an iPhone were 6S, 6S Plus and SE. Why? Cos 7 was the worst upgrade for the whole iPhone line-up and SE was the cheapest way to get to the iOS for years.

So, iPhone X owners... don't be so happy and don't feel better about your investment. You are not better. But the XS is.

As long as you can justify it to yourself it's all good. Lol.

Really, this is what it comes down to. Its All perception based on what the user wants to either upgrade or keep their current X. Both phones are great devices, but I think for those who have X, really won’t find that much of a reason upgrade to the XS this year, at least for the average consumer.

But I feel better getting the newest phone :) don't like used things...

I’m about to buy an iPhone 8 so having the newest model isn’t a need for me. It’s about being pleased with your purchase and if the newest makes you happy then great. I know i’ll be happy knowing I’ve got an awesome iPhone for nearly half the price. :)

Last year when the X came out all you heard was how expensive it was and how it would be 'cheaper next year'. Well, here we are next year and the XS is the same price as the X was. The upgrades aren't that earth shattering to want the new model. So hindsight being 20/20, the X is the best money I've ever spent on an iPhone since I will get at least 2 years use out of it.

It's cheap considering what would you rather buy and carry around.

An mp3 player
A video camera
A camera
A BlackBerry
A Nintendo Gameboy
And so on.
It's well priced and has the best features.

An iPhone X and 8 is still equipped to do all those tasks though. In fact iPhones have been able to act as cameras, media devices and gaming machines since they costed £600 new.

A heck of a deal you say? A heck of a deal is people buying the iPhone X now for $600-$700 and they can keep it longer. That's a hack of deal. You sir got screwed deep with that brand new apple lube I'm afraid.

An Expensive phone is a Social filter. Like a Honda Accord is a good car. But some people like to drive a Lexus or a Cadillac. They are social filters
If the iPhone Xs MAX is expensive there are other options. Like an Xr or a used Galaxy S8 Plus. Both good devices.
Apple is the king of social filters.
Macbook for the low end
Macbook Pro for the High end
iPad for the low end
iPad Pro for the High end
iPhone Xr or 8 for the low end
iPhone Xs or Xs Max for the High end

Someone even commented or I read somewhere 2 years ago, that market research was indicating that Wealthy customers were Upset that the 17 year old working at McDonalds could afford the same iPhone that upper middle class customers could afford.
I can only consider the way Apple has shifted its iPhone strategy into a confirmation of that market research. And a shift to make iPhone into a Luxury brand in some ways.

Wow, you compared a consumable to a durable good.

Well done. Fail on so many levels.
While a phone is technically a durable good, it’s increasing an object not designed to last.

A phone is consumer electronics- not built to last for long run, depreciates fast and each year it’s in effect replaced on the by one or many cheaper device that can do the same or more.

Apple is just that good.

And it doesn’t make it any less true that Apple, first and foremost, is a for profit business and answers to shareholders.
Even for profit business answer to many more stakeholders and profit is not the only goal. That’s a myth that’s well debunked.

That's part of my point. You still have to sell a kidney and your firstborn and more this year for the new phones that aren't that much different than last years model. I'm glad they aren't that much different so I'll happily use the X for 2 years. If, by some chance, Apple comes out with some awesomely different new phone next year, I'll at least have 2 years use from my X whereas the XS owners will be wanting to upgrade after only getting one year out of their phones.

Using the phone for multiple years does not constitute 'repeatedly' getting bent.

Well kind of. The net is that you bought the X for 999 and then whatever phone next year. The people that bought the Xs this year spent 999 and then whatever the fees are next year.

Basically you spent the same amount...

That doesn’t really apply where I live as you can get an XS Max for £45p/m on contract over three years now. I’m sure there will be low earners carrying this device around this year, to the horror of the snobs no doubt.

You can never judge people’s wealth on what phone they use as any market research will confirm its absolute bollocks.

I’m still using the 6 plus...I buy my phone upfront and change when I start to notice it struggling.

(Touches wood) and it’s still fine :D

What is interesting are the price rises in those few short years from 6 plus to now and the fact that people are cool with that...sure someone will have the figures but it feels like prices have almost doubling here?

Quite the achievement!

Can we stop moaning about how the Xs is "only" an incremental update on the X?

Many people on this board are a minority. The average person on the street don't upgrade phone every year.

Anyone moving from an iPhone 6 or 7 will see a meaningful jump in performance and camera output.

I would never describe £1000 as a ‘heck of a deal’ for any phone, but it is what I willingly paid for an X at launch. I knew full well that XS would appear within 10 months & that it would obviously have better specs than the X. The X was my first iPhone not on an ‘S’ cycle, so I did wonder how I would feel when the specs for XS were released/when the XS went on sale. In all honesty, my reaction to the XS has been ‘oh, is that it?’ - spending £1000 last year now seems less extreme...I don’t feel like I am missing out on anything, have enjoyed my phone for the past 10 months & will continue to do so until Apple release another phone which gives me an incentive to spend £1000 again.

To those who held out on X last year, but getting an XS later this week - enjoy

So, iPhone X owners... don't be so happy and don't feel better about your investment. You are not better. But the XS is.

Except your friend has essentially had the X (which is very similar to the XS) a year earlier than you and therefore got to enjoy Face ID, OLED screen etc a year longer so I don’t get your point tbh.

Also you say the “S” phones fix all the problems from the previous generation. Yet you fail to mention all the battery problems the 6S was plagued with which made apple have to issue a replacement program to replace them.

Colour is subjective and tbh in my opinion space grey looks better than gold so in my opinion the XS does not have a “nicer” colour.

I also don’t get why you say the 7 was the worst upgrade in the entire line up? The 7 was a bigger upgrade over the 6S compared to the difference between the X and the XS. If anything the XS is the least worthy upgrade in years as it hardly adds anything new from the previous generation that you will notice in day to day use.

Granted it is worth upgrading if you have a 7 or older, otherwise there is literally no point in upgrading if you have an X (Unless you want the Max of course).

Exactly where I'm coming from.

I’d feel much better if I’d picked up an X in the last few days and saved £200 though lol.

I picked up an X 256GB in August from Smartfonestore, a UK based reseller - they resell phones traded in via Fonebank, unlocked the price was £720 plus £5 delivery..... Grade B but when it arrived it was in perfect condition and has 8 months warranty left. I'll take an X before an XS and that level of saving!
