First of all. You can uplaod a photo or video to FB via email.

If you asked the vast majority of users in the world whether a computer is defined by its ability to transfer an MP3 or by its ability to interact with most of the the internet, create relatively basic content, or play computer games what do you think their answer would be?

Elwood is absolutely correct, the iPad and most any modern smartphone is a computer.

Sorry, but no.

The iPad is a computer. It is capable of running the Mach kernel and basically the same subsystem as OSX. It's a computer.

I suppose a PS3 isn't a computer either?

Bought the base model 11.6 model mba at best buy just 2 hours ago and cant get myself to open it. dont get me wrong its beautiful but i cant get myself around to understanding why i paid $1070 tax included for such an underpowered machine. I was back and forth between this and an ASUS G60JX for extreme gaming and the asus is only 799 refurb with 6gb ram, i5 ,500gb HD and Nvidia 360 GTS 1gb dedicated. Such a beast of a machine for 200 less. Im at a crossroads... already have an ipad and imac.

Part of the problem is you are trying to compare hardware across operating systems. It doesn't work that way.

Also the Macbook Air is not even close to being underpowered. You have to understand there is much more to a computer then the hardware specs, its all what the OS does with the specs that it has. The fact that I can do HD modeling in ZBrush (meaning modeling with 1 billion polygons) is incredible.

The shiny fishing lure got you... lol don't feel bad, but as stated above, if your looking for a gaming laptop. Take it back.

I'll disagree. While it's obviously not the best gaming computer money can buy, if you want a really small Apple laptop that can still game well, this MBA does do the trick.

I've played Far Cry, Tiger woods 2008, and Left4Dead (all using bootcamp) with my 1.4ghz 11-inch Macbook Air. All three of those games can run in full resolution, full detail without hiccups.

All these games are just a couple years old, so it's not like they're ancient.

So, to say it's not a 'gaming' laptop, is not quite right, by my experience.

Its not about hardware numbers its about performance, portability, and usage. Take it back!! you don't deserve one

I'll make a decision for you. Just return it. I noticed you posted the following comment in the other thread:

trash, 999 for a 64 gb slow 1.4 processor or 100 more for a 13.3 macbook pro with almost double everything. Ill pass.

You even said the new MacBook Air is a "trash..." and "Ill pass."

EPIC...FAIL

What a laughable thread!

I'd return it simply because you did not get the four gig ram option...

no resale value.

As for underpowered, it has a better video card than the original MBA, more ram potential and smaller form factor...

if it only had firewire I would have one in my hot little hands by now.

Anyway, return it. Think about it. But get the four gig ram option if you rebuy.

I didnt come here looking for sympathy.
Then I am unsure why the post in the first place.
Im a big boy and make my own decisions when it comes to what i want to buy.

Oh really? then what's this about?
Im at a crossroads... already have an ipad and imac.

I would think im smart enough to distinguish my needs vs my wants.
Something tells me you may not be the person you think you are because ...

The reason im confused is because im not sure how much i really need a gaming computer and how much will i invest into gaming on it.

Which is why to me the MBA is gonna serve the same purpose my iPad does.
Good workout of logic here, kinda late though.

Kudos for just coming out and saying it...but of course I expect nothing less from a person with a pumpkin butt as an avatar

I've learned to control what used to be a very impulsive tech purchase urge to at least realize that if I can't come up with the answer to that question, wait until I can. If I am honest with myself and that answer does not come, well therein lies my answer.

Brilliant! This works in an interesting way though: if you don'ts spend that money and let it grow, you'll be able to buy a nicer piece of gear later.

The OP should follow your advice.

An Ipad is a computer.

It's got a computational unit, Ram, storage system using multiple I/O interface with a specific bus. It runs off the assembly code used and lower level languages are similar to that of any other modern computer. It is clocked at 1GHZ, with 256GB of ram at a 16/32,64 Flash Hard drive variant.

It's file system is there but not accessible to the user is it is hidden within the operating system.

It's a computer. CPU + Memory + Storage linked by I/O interface which can handle mutiple computation commands such as Add subtract and multiply is the use of fetch decode execute methodology is sheer definition of a computer.

It's just not a powerful computer.

You may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. This is not logical, but it is often true." -- Spock

Just open the damn box. .... I promise you, the computer will have that 'new mac smell' and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. :p

Look at it this way: The closest in terms of portability and price is not the Asus or the Vaio Z, but the Vaio X. And the Vaio X sucks badly when compared to the Air: keyboard, CPU, GPU and screen are much worse.

The C2D gives you a great thermal design, and with respect to speed it is in the same league as last year's MBPs. Thus, you will be fine for a portable system.

If you are a portable gamer then you should look for the Alienware thingies, but if you want a system for writing, internet surfing, presenting, light programming and so on: this is it. The question is not if there are faster systems out there. The 11.6 Air might just be the best overall package. It is the only ultraportable with MacOS, after all...

The iPad is no computer.
Yes it is
Well, technically even the universe is a computer, in the sense that it can do computations. However, the iPad is no PC, and this is probably the point. For me, the iPad is a glorified media player. Yes, you can compose an eMail on it, and in a pinch, you can even take notes. But for productivity? Not this year.

First you can't compare the ipad to the MBA as they are totaly different machines with different OS's.

But imo if your going for hardware spec wise and dont care about the Mac OS beauty, by all means i would say go for the windows machine :)

I myself LOVE APPLE PRODUCT FTW !!!!! ARRRGGG LOL

Take it back and get the MBA13!

Then take the MBA13 back and get the ASUS!

I'm surprised no one else gave you a logical response.

An iPad is NOT a computer....

It is not a computer by definition

Both of you need to take a time-out. The iPad is very much a computer by definition.

Computer is a very generic term. The definition goes : "a device that takes inputs, runs it through a program and produces output while offering storage". This definition is not worded the same from dictionary to dictionary but it always comes down to these 4 basic requirements.

Again : Input (touch), Programmable (Yeppers!), Output (nice display!) and Storage (NAND Flash, RAM, indeed!).

The iPad is a computer by the very definition of a computer. So is your microwave's microcontroller or the ECM in your car. What they are not are Personnal Computers™ (notice the capital letters and trademark, this is referring to the PC platform. Many computers aren't PCs, like my Sunfire boxes from Sun (Fujitsu Sparc processors) or my HP 9000 series (HP PA-RISC processors)).

Try to remember you're on a forum with tons of IT specialists that actually know about these things and have degrees in Computer Science.

Sorry, but no.

Can you help me ? I'm pretty sure this is a computer but I can't seem to find a Flash plugin for it Here's the info on it :

# uname -sr
HP-UX B.11.31
# print_manifest
...
System Hardware

Model: ia64 hp server BL870c
Main Memory: 81889 MB
Processors: 8
Proccesor(0) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(1) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(2) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(3) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(4) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(5) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(6) Speed: 399 MHz
Proccesor(7) Speed: 399 MHz
OS mode: 64 bit

Is this thing a computer ? Because it can't run any Flash content...

Seriously, you people should stop trying to find specific tasks to claim whether something is a computer or not. Generic term is generic.

jessica while I find your pumpkin butt avatar and you cat balls analogies interesting, if a bit perplexing, I will have to side with those saying that -of course- the ipad is indeed very much a computer, under any definition of computer, broad or limited.

I will have to slightly disagree with Knight though, in that I think we would say that a microwave contains an integrated circuit, rather than it has a computer, although the way he states is very much acceptable too. I think the lines blur a bit there, but there's no doubt that an ipad is a computer for sure.

While older microwave ovens had circuitry and no programmable logic (it was all hard coded into the actual electronics using gate logic), modern microwave ovens pretty much fit the definition of computer and while no public SDKs exist, they are programmed using C on a microcontroller type architecture, probably using PIC processors.

So yes, while a stretch depending on the actual unit, a Microwave's controller is very much a computer. It is a very broad and generic term and trying to limit it to fit a smaller scope goes quite contrary to its purpose.

...an iPad for bedroom, pooping, travel use, and a MacPro for the heavy lifting.

You win serious intraweb cred for 'full disclosure.'

I mean, everyone who owns one does it, but what happens in the bathroom stays in the bathroom.
