I completely agree with the OP. Gave my 2018 12.9" iPad Pro to my daughter and used an iPad 6th generation thinking, no big deal to go smaller. Big ***** MISTAKE! Now I had to buy an M1 iPad Pro 12.9" (on sale at Best Buy today only $300 off if you are a My Best Buy member). Can't wait to go big again.

Congrats! That’s a great deal.

Anyone use the 12.9 for travel and any tray table issues 😄? I need a new iPad. Love the larger one but nervous of air travel with it …

I have a second generation iPad Pro 12.9 that is probably a brick when compared to these newer ones. I set it up on the tray table and it works fine. I've stopped traveling with my MacBook and just bring the iPad along.

i own both 11 and 12.9 M1 ipads . To be honest i ended with this setup after many many combinations :
11 for youtube , gaming, reading ebooks, manuals, anatomy and surgery apps ( much mor easier as holding my 12.9)
Macbook pro 14 for watching movies in bed ( much less amount of blooming, more angles of screen )
Macbook pro 14 + studio monitor (at home) and 2 ext monitors at work for some serious work

I used my M1 12.9 this summer in economy class and it worked fine with the Magic Keyboard. You might not be able to use the best angle depending on the angle of the seat in front of you, but the MK is much more flexible than the smart keyboard or the Logitech ones... Work perfectly with a smart cover too, if you don't need to type...

I swapped from a 12.9" M1 after a year to a 11" M1, I had the 2018 for 2 years before that, I get much more use out of the 11", tended to use my 13 max more when I had the 12.9, next phone will get a smaller pro.

I have only ever had the 11" iPad. I have always loved it for traveling, which is the only time I ever really use it, because I always found it a bit small otherwise. Everytime I used it, I always thought it was a little tiny to be an actual work device. So, it has always been relegated as a travel companion and served that purpose well.

Got the 12.9 when the new ones came out recently. Wow. I am really surprised at how useful this thing is.
  1. Sidecar with my 16" MBP is incredible. It is literally a secondary display that I now use all the time. I had no idea how much my MBP workflow could benefit from having an iPad as a second display. I'd tried the 11" before for this, but it was just always oddly small.
  2. Continuity is awesome. So there are times where I want to be able to use the iPad as an iPad, but still have it as a secondary display. Continuity allows this in the way that I want. I don't even have to set it up. It just works automatically. I can have a document open on my iPad, use the Apple Pencil to mark it up, and move my mouse over to my MBP when needed, type on my MBP even if I'm typing on something open on my iPad. Awesome.
  3. The Apple Pencil. This thing makes reviewing and marking up documents so much more pleasing and almost enjoyable.
  4. Games are better on the larger iPad. I have more space. Just better.
  5. The iPad has also definitely replaced, in many instances, my MBP for just browsing webpages on the couch. It's a smaller device and is more enjoyable in many respects to use for this purpose.
  6. Typing. I have the Magic Keyboard. The first time I pulled it out and used it I tested my typing speed at 90 words per minute. Then, I tested myself on my MBP that I have used for years, 90 words per minute. So, no loss there. The trackpad on the Magic Keyboard makes it like having a MacBook, minus the function row keys.
  7. I have noticed with my increased use of the iPad that I often end up trying to touch the MBP to do something. This is because for many tasks I end up preferring that style of input. It feels more natural and quicker at times.
I am traveling in a few weeks and will take my iPad with me. It's definitely a bit bigger than the 11", but I'm looking forward to it. I have a small backpack that holds it well and I'm looking forward to making use of it. If anyone is on the fence about the functionality of the iPad or is concerned about moving from the 11" to the 12.9", maybe this will help sway you one way or another.
I'm glad you're enjoying the bigger iPad! For all the things you've mentioned, it's fantastic.

Ultimately for mobility, I prefer the 11 and feel like I can do everything you've mentioned.

Traveling with a backpack, only using it for desk sessions or around the house ... 12.9 seems good. Walking around the office or the city taking meetings using it as your paper notebook replacement instead of a full fledged laptop ... 11" all the way.

Anyone who uses anything other than a smartphone or iPad Mini at a coffee shop is a pretentious clown. Just saying. 😬🤡

I hope the rumors about a 12.9 inch iPad Air are true. That would be interesting to me, because the price of the 12.9 iPad Pro plus Magic Keyboard is just too steep for my liking …

If you fly economy class, smaller is better to be safe as some airlines really got small trays.

The local Starbucks or public library (whichever is more convenient) tend to be favorites for telecommuting when the home internet is down and one's cellular signal is crap. :p
Lucky for us it's rare our home internet goes down and we have 5G anyway.

good point on the MK, wonder how the apple folio is, I like it as minimal as possible.

lucky! I like the 12.9 for surgery apps.. more realistic.. :) equally love my 16" for writing and big things..

Yeah I brought mine with me when I flew out to Lake Tahoe (via Reno, NV). It was around a 3 hour flight and I used it for my own inflight entertainment. Sure with the Magic Keyboard it’s heavier than a MBA, but it’s an easy travel device.
awsome! Love tahhoe too!

This will make the pro more expensive and you will get with the Air a ”crippled” pro.

I totally agree. It’s overkill, but I EDC and travel with 12.9 in Magic Keyboard and 11 in Smart Folio. I use the 12.9 when reading news, writing, presenting, zoom, and laptop like work, while I use the 11 as a super-capable, Internet connected Moleskine notepad.
