Also why would the 12.9” ever produce a smaller picture than the 11”? The 12.9 is bigger in every dimension.
Sorry, I was stating something that I was pretty sure I had read more than one person write before without fact-checking it. Checking Apple's tech specs now, you are correct that the iPad Pro 12.9" is both taller and wider than the iPad Pro 11", so even the widest of widescreen movies will provide a larger image on the 12.9" vs the 11" model. So, regardless of what we think/know about the ideal aspect ratio for human vision, any suggestion that the iPad Pro 11" might ever offer a larger image for movie watching is incorrect. It may "fill" its screen more fully, but the end result will still be a smaller image. Sorry for contributing to the misinformation there.

I also did more searching regarding the aspect ratio of human vision, and still came up pretty empty. Just the same sort of information I alluded to in my last post. So I'll fully concede that you might be correct in your position that 4:3 may closer to it than 16:9 would be.

Again, I personally enjoy watching movies that are wider-than-16:9, but I'm doing that inside of my house on a very large widescreen pull-down screen (~2.35:1). If you don't have the 12.9" iPad Pro too far away from your face, you may get a similarly immersive experience.

Also, I'll even retreat from my previous assertion that we won't see a return to 4:3 (or something narrower than 16:9) anytime soon (well, I still don't think it will be anytime soon, but it might happen over time). In fact, there's a lot of new "content" that is filmed in portrait mode on smartphones. I believe some apps allow for recording videos in a square resolution, too (better for posting on Facebook, I believe). These typically bother me, but a lot of that reason is because I'm watching it on a screen that is wider than it is taller. But with an iPad or smartphone, we have the ability to easily rotate the device to best fit whatever content you're wanting to watch. It actually wouldn't shock me if people stopped buying/installing so many large-screen TVs in the future, and we instead had a world where everyone just watched things on their own device, even when sitting together in the same room to watch the same thing (each person watching it separately on their own device).

I should note that I'm also a fan of the promise of Virtual Reality and own both a Sony PSVR and Oculus Quest (and prior to that got an Oculus Go). I'm not really a heavy gamer, though, so I don't fire them up that often. You can watch Netflix (and other streaming services) on the Oculus Quest, but the PQ is awful, compared to my front projector or what you'd get with an iPad close to your face. I expect resolution, comfortability for wearing for extended periods, etc. will improve over time, though. I'm interested to see what Apple has planned for their AR glasses. I'm hoping that they are also exploring VR, and not just AR.

Some facts regarding watching 16:9 movies on both iPads.

The 12.9" iPad has 40.56% larger display area compared to the 11", but when watching 16:9 movies the 12.9" has only a 31.06% larger display area.

So you still have a larger movie image on the iPad 12.9", the 11" has only smaller black bars.

Just for the record, I don’t really like to watch videos on my iPad either. To me, watching on my tv while relaxing on my couch is the ideal movie watching experience.

If vertical videos become long form, I guess they could also make TVs that rotate. Would be strange.

I watched a movie in vr for a few minutes. At first I thought it was silly to watch 2D in a 3D world, but it was an interesting experience because theoretically you could create for yourself an ideal viewing environment, and make the screen any size you want, to become totally enveloped. But like you said, resolution was lacking. I think it didn’t have hdr as well. It will probably be awhile before it starts to compare to as a high quality tv or projector. They need to figure out good sound too.

Well, some seem to think that I’m going on here, while I thought that this was the place to come to to discuss the sizes, where others had the same issue or had already made up their minds, so I apologise. Feel free to read my post or skip over it.

The 11” arrived and I’ve been doing a few comparisons with my 12.9”. These are some initial thoughts. (o.k., so I opened it).
The 11’ is cute and light, after using the 12.9”. If I didn’t have the 12.9” and I was coming straight from the 10.5”, I dare say that I’d be quite happy.
I don’t have the new MK for either size here to compare them, but I have the ASK 12.9” (daughter’s iPad) and ASK 10.5” to compare those with previous version iPads. I can type on either, but the experience is a little better on the 12.9” with fewer mistakes. I think that I could adapt to either keyboard.

I’m not so sure about the side by side apps on the 11”. I notice that the macrumors forums get a lot of white space (unless I pinch to zoom) in Safari when using it side by side. On the left is macrumors in the Tapatalk app and on the right is Safari.
Videos and YouTube are good on both.
Kindle app is better on the 11”, but then I have other devices that I can read on anyway.

Keep going. I am actually interested indeed in posts like this where people do have them both side by side and share tidbits from their personal usage. I think that it helps more than the general youtube tech reviewers you know.

Question for people like me :D . How does it feel setting up Face ID on 11 inch and 12.9 and do you see difference in terms of cases where facial recognition does not work and you need to enter your passcode?

Thank you. I’m happy to share more photos if there is anything you’d like to see? I spend a bit of time on macrumors, so I have been including that in my comparison. When using Safari with macrumors, the with of the forum content looks to be the same in landscape.

I think you should feel free to waffle away and change your mind to and fro. This is a forum to discuss the pros and cons of the two sizes of the iPad Pro and that’s what you are doing. I have read all your recent posts and totally understand how difficult it is to choose. I think you‘ve done the right thing opening up the new 11” to compare alongside your 12.9”.

It’s unlikely that you’ll get a 100% match for a particular size for your needs. You choose the one that matches more for the things you use it for and the amount of time you use it. Just looking at your last photos and there is more content shown in a better way on the 12.9”. If you use split screen a lot, then you’re also getting improvements.

However, the 11” is ‘cute’, lighter and easier to hold in one hand. I believe that when you add the AMK to the mix, neither iPad will be light. I also think the keyboard on the larger iPad (screen, SKF or AMK) is better for me. I’ve been tempted by the 11” with AMK, but I love the screen estate on the 12.9” even though I have a MBP 13” (different OS, different uses for me). I will be sticking with my 2018 12.9” and buying the AMK. You also have a 10.5” that you could use for more portability.

This is just my take on your recent posts and my experience with my decision making. I’m sat in bed now, using the iPad propped up on my knees and the on-screen keyboard and it’s just great! I passed down my 2nd gen 12.9 to my husband when I got this 2018 12.9” and I asked him if he could cope using the much larger iPad (he had a 9.7”). He looked at the screen and said “It’s bloody gorgeous. I don’t care. I’ll find a way to cope!” He takes it everywhere and doesn’t care about the size (body is larger than this 3rd gen).

Sorry, I‘ve waffled too much as well, just tapping away nicely and feeling comfy too!

Keep going with your thoughts and updates. I hope you manage to choose the size that’s right for YOU. Take your time and use your return window well, but most of all, have fun and enjoy ?

Btw is it my Internet (currently hotspot from the iPhone and gets reconnected every 30 minutes and makes me smash somewhere the phone), your camera or there is difference of the color temperature in the two devices.

12.9 inch seems cooler to me (more in the blueish hint) while the 11 inch seems more in the yellow tint/pink tint. Cannot explain it properly and I have some issues with seeing colors properly anyway but for me they look different.

Very interesting. Is it just me or does it look like the text size is basically the same size on both, only difference is the 12.9 shows more of the sentences when going horizontally?

Thank you for your response Mandy, I really appreciate the detail and time that you took to respond to me.
My thoughts were that I wouldn’t open the iPad box if I wasn’t going to keep it as I kind of feel that I’m wasting Apple’s money if I just do it for the sake of it. But the responses on here were encouraging, then my husband also said that I really should try it. I’m glad that I have as it has been helpful.

While I think that the 11” is cute and light, I think that I’m leaning more towards the 12.9”. You are right in that the content displays better on the 12.9”. I would mostly use a single app, but do sometimes use two or picture in picture, so video while browsing. Those videos are actually quite a bit larger on the 12.9” too.

You are right in that neither iPad will be light with a MK. The 12.9” would provide a better typing experience though. I may end up leaving the MK at home most of the time though and just take the 12.9” to work with the Smart Cover. The reason is that I’m more likely to consume content during my lunch break than create. However, if I started using my iPad again for meetings then I’d take the keyboard. I haven’t done that recently as my work brought in inTune profiles and that controls a few features on my iPad that I’m not sure that I’m comfortable with.

My daughters love the 12.9”. One has the 2015 and the other has the 2017. Both were my hand me downs. My husband has the iPP 9.7” and prefers the smaller size for himself, yet he uses his iPhone 95% of the time and a regular iPad would be suitable for him, but he also has my hand me down, so that has worked for us too.

You are also right that I have the 10.5” for portability. If I stick to the 12.9” size, I‘lol just end up holding on to that until it breaks. I had it swapped by Apple for the white spot issue, but this one is still going strong with no white spot.

One thing that I did notice about the 11” was that the battery was very slow to drop. My 12.9” drains faster, but it is also 17 months old. It’s not too bad though, I just noticed the difference.

Thanks! You forgot to answer my question about FaceID usage on both devices :).

You are so right, I did forget, sorry. Keeping in mind, the limited time that I’ve spent with the 11”, I feel that the Face ID is similar, but potentially faster on the 11”. The 11” I am trying is the 2020 one though, while my 12.9” is the 2018 one. It was nice and easy to set up on the 11” as it’s so light. But if both are laying down flat, then I had to tilt them up towards my face for Face ID to work. My testing is non scientific, but it was immediate on the 11”.

The colours of the 12.9” and 11” are a similar tone. I am in a dark room with a dim yellowish light, so I am not sure if that impacted anything in the photos. If I turn the brightness up to full on both iPads though, the 11” is much brighter. I have also compared my 10.5” screen. They all have True Tone turned on. The screen of the 10.5” is more yellow, but the 12.9” and 11” are similar. Of the 3, I would say that the 11” has the nicest screen due tot the brightness level. It’s gorgeous.

I have changed the text size in both iPads to be on the smallest text setting, so it looks like Apple displays the text the same. The difference is then caused only by the width of the screen.

I’ve gone back and forth between the 11 and the 12.9 over the years (waffling uncontrollably!) and the psychology has been really interesting. Before the 12.9 first gen, I had the 9.7. So when I switched to the 12.9 there was a “holy crap this is comically big!” Moment when I first opened that baby up. But then I got used to it and it became the norm. I didn’t see it as big anymore and whenever I saw the smaller iPad, it seemed comically small. Like almost silly small like a toy.

but then I just got...fatigued? Using the 12.9 and trying to pull that big thing out all the time. I noticed that I was less likely to pull it out and just use my phone because it was just...kind of a hassle? I had to do more to justify bringing it out. So after a couple years I switched down to the 10.5 and it felt like a sweet spot. Then the 11inch pro came out and I was just in absolute heaven. Little bit bigger without being bigger!

the perspective shift is really interesting. When I switched to the big one, I got used to it and looked at everything else different. When I stepped down to 10.5, my perspective changed and the 12.9 seemed silly large to me. When I got the 11, I got used to it to the point I felt I could do all my work on it. So in a way, I feel like when I look at both sizes, I have to compensate for these “perspective shifts” and really ask myself...what do I use it for? How do I use it? Do I use my iPad more if it’s 11 inch or enjoy it more at 12.9? In the end, I got used to the 11 inch and use it far more. Just like that video I sent you, you could see that a lot of the usable real estate was white space on webpages, black bars on videos or just a little bit extra space on files. It didn’t seem that big to me. But that’s just me.

interesting experiment for ya: put away your 12.9 for a few days. Just a few days! Use the 11 like it’s your only one and erase the other iPads out of your mind. See how you feel at the end of a few days and go from there. You might have a perspective shift

You‘re very welcome. I agree about not ordering things from Apple and not opening them if you have no intention of keeping them, but in a few circumstances, people need to try different sizes of iPhones, iPads and Macs etc in their own home, and especially now since many Apple retail stores are closed (All here in the UK). I’ve enjoyed reading your posts and look forward to your updates. The only thing I returned was a Smart Keyboard folio for my 12.9”. I just found that my bluetooth magic keyboard and Magic Trackpad 2 worked better for my use and I didn’t need the keyboard on the go at that time. I use the simple smart folio. It doesn’t add much weight and I find the micro fibre on the back to hold the iPad in place on my lap or beanie bag.

The main reason I would like a AMK is for the backlights and built in trackpad, but it’s expensive. I haven’t ordered one yet, but watched lots of review videos and read opinions on Mac Forums. I think it may transform my iPad and it may just feel like a whole new setup with just the purchase of an accessory that would keep me going for another 2-3 years before upgrading. I am waiting to see in the next week or so what will happen with my work and travelling etc before I order. I feel I need to be 80% sure I will keep it before ordering. I wish I could see one in person.

I realise I’m now mainly talking about an iPad accessory so I should probably post this in that forum, but anyway, please let me know your thoughts on both iPads and AMK when it arrives. Thanks ?

interesting experiment for ya: put away your 12.9 for a few days. Just a few days! Use the 11 like it’s your only one and erase the other iPads out of your mind. See how you feel at the end of a few days and go from there. You might have a perspective shift

I agree with this! Great idea ?

Also, just use the AMK for that iPad for the few days maybe?

I’m binge watching comparison videos on YouTube because of coarse I am lol I noticed in this video he talks about Face ID being a little worse on the 12.9. Go to about 4 minutes in

[automerge]1589372624[/automerge]

I understand what you are saying. I’ve also switched sizes a few times, including having a mini 2 as my main device. That only lasted 6 months though before I got an Air as well as I missed the larger screen. I had the same reaction when I got my first 12.9”. After switching for a few days, that device becomes the new normal. I tried that last weekend when I used my 10.5” all weekend to think about how I’d go with the smaller iPad. It felt quite small at first and then, by Sunday night, the 12.9” seemed huge.

For the past 17 months, the 12.9” has been my main iPad. I had also felt somewhat fatigued about carrying it as it goes in my handbag to work and everywhere. So if I go shopping after work, I still have the 12.9” in my handbag. I would also get my iPhone out in some situations, even though my iPad was in my bag. I reached a point after 10 or so months where I started to think about switching to the 11” when the next release came out. But then I seemed to recover somewhat from the fatigue and it began to bother me less to have the 12.9” in my handbag again. Then covid-19 happened and I started working from home, so the 12.9” was great for working from home. But due to the MK, I started reconsidering sizes again. I got used to carrying the 12.9”, but that was without the MK.

I also use the 12.9” with just the Smart Folio. I ordered and cancelled the MK for the 12.9” a few times before ordering the 11” and MK this past Saturday. The 11” arrived today, only 3 business days later. The MK was estimated to be 3 weeks away, so I can’t try it with the 11” unless I decide to keep it. I had flipped so much and had also thought about cancelling the 11” again after ordering it, but it was too late. I could only cancel the MK. I intended on sending the 11” straight back, so I have the MK for the 12.9” on order again. Now I’ve opened the 11” and it’s cute and totally usable. It likely suits my use cases the best, but I just love the big 12.9” screen, just not the weight in my handbag.
I’m in Australia and we are beginning to lift restrictions now. Apple stores opened everywhere except Sydney last Thursday. I could have ordered a MK online for pick up as I saw them there, but I’d prefer to ease into going out again slowly. I’m on immunosuppressants, so easing into it is a good idea. Besides, the closest store is around 45 minutes drive away, so not ideal if I’m not certain that I’ll keep it.

I’m giving the 11” a try tonight and could do so again tomorrow. If I’m going to keep my 12.9” in addition to the 11” though, I might just end up in a situation like I was in already where I take one or the other iPad to work with me. So I’m not sure if that will work. I think I’m leaning towards returning the 11” and keeping the MK order for the 12.9”.

Okay, I understand. I suppose I think that the only reason to stick with the 11” is for the smaller AMK since you already have a 10.5”. I believe you will still have the best of both worlds with the 12.9” and AMK and other more portable options. You will miss the 12.9” screen if you go with the 11”, but then you would have the 12.9” at home. I think you should just keep using the 11” for a few more days. It’s a shame there’s a wait for the AMK. Have fun and enjoy ?

Just wanted to say this is fantastic advice and it's basically what I am doing, except I am doing the opposite. Since I have always had the smaller iPads, 9.7 and 10.5, I am currently ONLY trying the 12.9 and acting like I don't have the smaller ones. I want to see how I feel about it after a while of every day use. So far I like it in use but sometimes I don't want to pick it up and use it due to size. However I still can't get over how much more I like typing on the bigger one.

Thanks for this! This is interesting! When I asked the question I was wondering about the rate of errors - meaning do you have to enter more the passcode on 12.9 inch or 11 inc but interesting that it is also a bit slower.

millydog said:
You are so right, I did forget, sorry. Keeping in mind, the limited time that I’ve spent with the 11”, I feel that the Face ID is similar, but potentially faster on the 11”. The 11” I am trying is the 2020 one though, while my 12.9” is the 2018 one. It was nice and easy to set up on the 11” as it’s so light. But if both are laying down flat, then I had to tilt them up towards my face for Face ID to work. My testing is non scientific, but it was immediate on the 11”.

Got it. Yeah my question is related to how easy it is (based on the size) to get accurate Face ID reading and to not to have to enter the passcode.

I see. Maybe it is just the lighting and their positioning.

This is exactly what I’m doing, and I think it’s slightly larger than I want it to be,but I love the screen estate.

I came from an iPad Mini 5, which I used for a year, to a refurb 2018 IPP 12.9, and I love love love this big size. The Mini is very nice and fast, but now its size looks hilariously small after moving up to the 12.9. I also don't use portrait mode on my iPads; always landscape with a keyboard case for laptop (on a pillow) use, and my iPads never leave the house.

12.9 is the only way to go. One look at that screen and there’s no turning back. Just received mine and it has the wow factor that should come with a device you are paying $1,000 for. I’m coming from an Air 2 and 10.5 Pro.

11” does not give the same impression as the 12.9 yet you are still paying basically $1,000 for the base 11” ($799 + Apple Care + Taxes). If the 11” was more like $599 or $650 then possibly. However, if you’re spending close to $1,000 anyway you might as well get the most for your money. Saving $200 for the 11” over the 12.9 over the course of 5 years or longer (how long we can realistically use these) is peanuts per month.

Go big or go home.

The 12.9 is not cumbersome at all. On the couch, you’re sitting down so it’s on your lap or in a smart folio with tilt stand. Portability? It fits nicely in most bags an 11” would. Carrying around is no problem, you’re not jogging with it.

There is no replacement for displacement.

12.9” is the definition of what the Pro should be.

after hemming and hawing, my 11” is in the mail on the way back to apple. the 12.9 suits my iPad only life more and realizing its no less portable with the keyboard than a Mac, and when I want to kick back I detach it

For me, other than the period of time when 9.7" was the only option, the software has dictated what size iPad I needed. Around the time of the original iPad Air I started wanting to go iPad-only and quickly found out that iOS just wasn't ready for what I really wanted to do. There were a few years in between that iPad and the first iPad Pro where I had given up on the device as something I could ever use as my main machine, so I just got an iPad mini and went back to my Macbook.

Then the iPad Pro came out and I had a glimmer of hope. But for the first three generations I was pretty convinced that the smaller one was best for me. I wanted it to be a more hold-able tablet when off the keyboard, but big enough to be able to do laptop type stuff when it's on the keyboard.

That remained true until I started really jumping in to the Affinity apps, LumaFusion, ProCreate, etc. Those apps are all just way better and way more usable on a bigger screen. So this year I jumped up to the 12.9" model, and it's pretty liberating to have all that canvas.

Side note: I find it crazy that this is the first year that the smaller sized iPad was the same dimension as last gen. If you've been buying the smaller model every year, like I have, you went 9.7", 10.5", 11". I have to wonder if Apple has gone back and forth a little bit internally on whether or not to even HAVE a smaller iPad Pro model.

Quite a feat in denial. Do you have any colleages who make “only” 30% more than you? ? That’s a huge gap in size man. These devices are not in the same class once you discuss screen size. The only confusion is caused by Apple’s incredible job of designing the 12’.9” to be so compact.

In Apple's marketing materials and even sometimes in person at stores, I mistake the 12.9" model for the 11" model at first glance. If I'm just passing by, I have to look at how the Pencil is sitting to figure out which one it is. That's how close they LOOK in size in casual observation. I think a lot of people consider 11" to be "normal sized" for an iPad and 12.9" to be "the huge model". In reality, like they said in 2018, the 12.9" model is the size of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Over time when actually using one, that starts to feel like the "normal sized" iPad and the 11" starts to feel like "the small model". Looking at my son's 9.7" iPad Air 2, it looks more like a mini to me now, and my other son's ACTUAL iPad mini looks dink and borderline unusable.
