I ordered a MK for the 12.9 that should arrive in a week or two in addition to a cheap magnetic Apple folio case knock off from Amazon (was under $20 and works great). Also have a TomToc carrying case for the 12.9. Thought is I’ll keep the iPad in the MK (will give it additional structural reinforcement to help prevent any bending issues) and also keep the folio case in the kit as well (which should barely add any bulk or weight). When I go from MK to tablet mode, its a simple process with both cases being magnetic... keeping the iPad protected at all times. I’ll try out keeping the empty folio case under the MK for quick access when using the iPad for productivity work on a desk.

Could you please tell me the make of the case from Amazon?

This is the carrying case I ordered. In the front pocket I have my Apple pencil, Hyperdrive usb c hub, 3’ usb c and lightning cables (for the iPad and my iPhone), and a 45W PD usb c and usb a portable power bank for fast charging both on the go.

And this is the 12.9 folio case I ordered and am currently using as I wait for the MK... no complaints at all.

I have both... a work supplied 2018 11” pro and a personal 2020 12.9” pro. Honestly, I feel like the 11” is the better pure tablet experience. It’s easier to hold, especially with one hand. I also prefer the aspect ratio, to me it looks more aesthetically pleasing in addition to it being better for media consumption.

But the 12.9” is a better jack of all trades IMO, and better blurs the lines between the tablet and laptop experience. And with iPadOS continuing to offer features that make it more and more a laptop replacement, it was the choice for me.

My main use case is as a tablet, I have a windows laptop for work and a MacBook Pro at home already. The 12.9” also makes a great tablet, but yes, the 11” is lighter and more portable. This has been my dilemma.

Half way through the day and I went way way and then the other again, so basically I’m undecided again. Luckily we get 14 days to decide. It’s Friday, so I’ll be able to think about it more over the weekend when I’m not having to work.

Not sure if this will help, but when using one try not to compare it directly to the other, but when using it does any issues creep up or little things nag at you. Maybe with the smaller one as you’re performing any of your tasks, do you feel like the small screen is limiting and getting in the way?

With my 11” I know I would really like the screen on the 12.9 and could benefit from it in some areas, but when using mine I don’t feel restricted by it in those same areas.

Yep--this was my exact reasoning. I have always appreciated the smaller models for their pure tablet-ness--I do still want the iPad part to be an iPad--but I use my iPad Pro as a laptop AND a tablet. It's my main go-to machine for everything, so I feel like in that situation 12.9" is the way to go.

I judge it by how I like at night when I just want to watch something or read a book. For the longest time I thought the 12.9" would be too clunky for that, but I was wrong. I LOVE having the larger screen for those activities. I feel that if you just pop it off the MK and use it "naked" in tablet mode without any extra bulky cases, it's wonderful.

Because I'm very paranoid about damaging the iPad, I just put a skin on the back, the camera housing, and the sides, so it still feels like I'm holding it without any extra bulk at all. I love it, and can't believe I didn't do this more often before. I think the inability of the MK to fold all the way back has forced people to explore their options more as far as what to do when they don't need the keyboard, and this has been the ideal setup for me.
For me it's an accessory device, so the 11” works great. I didn’t really need the iPad when I got back into it this past month, and I guess I still for the most part don’t.

But, currently, I use it to wind down after dinner, as a second computing device on my desk that I can poke at while I play a game, as an all in one way to take quick calls while i work, and as a travel device on the occasional trip. It has value by simply existing to fill in the gaps in my routine, not as something I need to extract the most value out of while I’m using it.

Well I used the 11” all day and just picked up my 12.9”. The 12.9” seems bigger after using the 11”. I’m trying to work out if that’s a good thing. I have some use cases where the big one is better, but it’s still a matter of trying to figure out portability vs larger screen.
Putting the 12.9” away again for more time with the 11”.

Lol keep it put away for a few days. These constant reminders of what the 12.9 feels like are tainting your experiment! ?

Ok, so when I said that I used the 11” all day, it was broken usage as I was working from home. I finished work a few hours ago and then got a solid couple of hours with the 11”. I then picked up the 12.9” to check an email and wow, it hit me how big the 12.9” felt. It reminded me as to why I was looking at the 11” in the first place.
I guess it does take a couple of days to work it out and it helps to put the other one away too. After all that, I’m going to keep the 11” and I just opened the packaging that contained my new Smart Cover. I had been resting it gently on the doona or the back of the 10.5” Smart Cover until now. I have also just restored the 11” from the 12.9” backup. I hadn’t done that yet, I’d only set up a few apps to try out. I’m going to have an extra 5 days wait on the MK now as I’ve cancelled the 12.9” MK again and ordered the 11” MK now. Oh well, at least I’m getting this sorted. Thanks for the advice.

Milly do you think you're sticking with the 11 now? Been following your story with interest as I can't decide either

So it’s not just me? This has been quite a hard decision. I feel like as soon as I make up my mind, I think of a reason, watch or read something that changes my mind again.
What are your thoughts and what device do you have now?

I think that the best option for me is to keep the 12.9”, I feel that is the option that I’m least likely to regret.

I have an old 10.5 at the moment and not sure which iPad to upgrade to.

The cheaper 11 would mean I could get the keyboard too, so I'm trying to convince myself what I could use the keyboard for

However

The 12.9 has a bigger screen and I work in Graphic Design, so it could be useful for that but it's more expensive so I probably couldn't get the keyboard too

I even went as far as cutting the two sizes out of cardboard and holding them on the sofa, in bed, various places to see how they fit, but that didn't seem to help!

I think that I’m going to stick with the 12.9” and get the MK for it. I went into this wondering if the 11” could be the goldilocks size for me, but it is feeling squashed in landscape mode and I’m almost sure that I’d miss the bigger screen.
As you are in Graphic Design, I’d suggest the 12.9”. It will last you some time, so you can always get the keyboard later on. It sounds like, to me, you want to start out with the 12.9” and an Apple Pencil. I use the Apple Smart Cover and also a best skins ever (clear) skin on the back and sides of my iPad too, but there are cheaper options on Amazon if you prefer.

I’m the same, not totally convinced that I need to upgrade from the IPP 10.5 if I went with the 11”.

I’ve been wavering, but it keeps coming into the back of my head when I picked up the 12.9 one in the Apple Store when the previous ones come out how big it was compared to the 11.
I think I’d be making a mistake (personally) if I did go for the 12.9 as love how my 10.5 feels to hold and use.
... the only thing I see of benefit with the 12.9 is the split screen, and really don’t need that on a day to day basis, and the 10.5 does it well enough so I think that would be fine on the 11.

I keep coming around to the fact that the 11 would be the right size. It’s so nice!

I just dabble in graphic design with Affinity Designer and I can tell you 100% that the extra screen space is MUCH appreciated for those kinds of projects.

11” is the perfect portable size for my use cases. It functions as a cookbook in the kitchen, news/book reader in portrait, workout companion for at home exercising/yoga, audio recorder w/ GarageBand, iWork companion with the magic keyboard, handheld gaming, etc.

The MacBook feels like a fragile piece of glass next to the iPad, which in turn makes it a not so portable device when bringing it around places. Here’s to hoping the pro apps rumor for WWDC is true.
