I actually said I’d get a MacBook, thats me not them.
Plus if they are holding it all the time it will be heavy, your saying a 12 but have no idea if the person is large or small, strong or normal.
I wouldn’t want to hold a 12.9 all the time, you might I wouldnot.
I bet they get the 12.9 as it’s the big new toy and return it for the 11.

Honestly don't find the 12.9" iPad without a case heavy at all, with a case absolutely, but it's not a deal breaker, I'm always resting my iPad on my leg, stomach, couch and so on, so weight is a non issue.

@uktom1986 id have a read of the thread below, it’s 50-50 in the poll roughly so it’s your call.

Don’t understand how a poll is going to help him, if his main use case for a ipad is media consumption, then it’s the big boy all the way, if anything it’ll confuse him even more ?

Thanks for all the replies. The consensus here seems to be the 12.9 and to be honest, my heart is saying the 12.9, because of the display, but my head is saying the 11. Portability is not really an issue as it will only used at home, and either on my lap or propped up in bed. I do have a MacBook for work stuff, so this will only be for consumption.
Think I will bite the bullet, and the 12.9 and see how I get on with it. If it is too big, can return and get the 11.

thanks all

Once you go with the 12.9" there is no going back, the apple folio case comes in handy for popping up the iPad, put mine in kick stand mode while lying in bed and rest it on my stomach lol, on the couch i stand it up on the arm rest.

Deep navy or green, you’re welcome ??

I had a 11” for 2.5 years and have had my new 12.9” for a week now, my wife still has a 11”. I could never go back the 11” looks like a mini next to it. I have had every iPad and this is the best one yet.
Just get it you won’t regret it.

The mallard green is supposed to be nice, looks teal. I bought a surf blue off eBay still sealed, and it looks great with my silver iPad.

Hello all

know this has probably been discussed but I would like some help deciding whether to get the 11 or 12.9 inch iPad Pro. The device will only be used as a tablet- web browsing, watching you tube, playing a few games, and streaming Netflix/prime. The device will never be used on a desk or with a keyboard case - just a folio cover and will be used either on the couch, resting up on my legs or when sitting up in bed. I have a 10.5 inch iPad already which is a lovely size, but now want to upgrade to either of the 2 new pro’s. If apple had made the 11 inch mini led, then my decision would have been easy, but as it’s only on the 12.9, I am considering this size too, but am wary this will be too cumbersome to use.

Does anyone have or have used a 12.9 just as a tablet, never on a desk, and without a keyboard case. If so how comfortable is to use on the sofa / bed.
Or has anyone tried both and decided on 11 because it is the perfect size.

Thank you in anticipation

I have both (12,9” 2020 and 11” 2021) and for your use case (similar to mine) I do recommend the 11”. The 12,9 is a good choice for desktop use only. For this reason this year I am selling the larger one and enjoying the iPad 11”.

I have both 2018s, and I use both for work and pleasure. If I had to choose, it would be 12.9 pretty easily. While I love the compactness of the 11 for throwing in my purse, realistically when I am at home (the vast majority of the time) I always go for the 12.9 unless I actually lying down. Sitting up, in bed or on the couch, the “bulk” of the 12.9 just isn’t a thing. I’m essentially curled up and it is resting on my legs. I am addicted to Civ 6, and the bigger screen size is just so much nicer.

I just bought a used 2020 12.9 off here for my dad. He’s older and strictly will be using it for YouTube. I know, wasted. I wished they made a non-pro 12.9.

I also wrote an email and thought the exact opposite. It depends how you use it. As a desktop better the 12,9 keyboard, as a tablet better the 11” keyboard…?

I own both the 11” and 12”9 and think the opposite. The 12,9” is somewhere in between and doesn't excel as either a laptop or a tablet. So in my opinion better to have a “real” laptop and a “real” tablet (11").

I have both an 11 and a 12.9 (and a MBP and a Windows gaming machine) and I also think that typing on an 11 is cramped and typing on a 12.9 feels comfortable. I do use it as a replacement for some “laptop” type activities and think that for my uses (which is really the only thing that matters to me) is that it does not excel as a laptop, but that is something that could be remedied by a few improvements to iPadOS. Whether we get them or not is up to Apple. I use my 11 iPad strictly as a consumption tablet and it excels at that. I am a bigger guy and could use the 12.9 as a tablet but am lucky enough that works buys my tablets for development so I get the best of both worlds.

I've used the 12.9 for a couple of years, and just downsized to the 11. I can see both positions about the keyboard... if I were typing in "desktop mode" with the iPad horizontal and propped up with a smart cover style case, yeah, the 12.9 would be easier. But handheld vertically, it's far easier to thumb-type on the 11.

Do you not find the 11” slightly too large to thumb type in portrait mode? I find I can’t comfortably hit the center keys. I’m honesty not sure why Apple did away with the split keyboard. It seems like a really good solution no matter what the size.

I have resigned in the fact that my brain will troll me no matter which route I go. I had previous gen 2017 10.5 and 12.9 iPad Pros and I used the 10.5 WAAAAY more, but when I did use the 12.9 (namely for sheet music and gigging, as well as some art) it was way better for those specific applications. I use my iPad in bed and lying around the couch a lot and the old 12.9 was just way too obnoxious for that.

That being said, I got the 11-inch pro and I keep telling myself that maybe I can get used to the 12.9, maybe I should swap it out while I’m still in the return period. Then just today I went to Best Buy to pick up a few (non-Apple) things and I compared them once more. Best Buy has this funny way of making big TVs and devices like tablets seem way smaller than they really are, I think it’s just the really open environment, because when I went to the table that had iPad Pros the 11-inch looked like a Mini, hah.

Anyway, I tend to one-hand my iPad a lot so I did the test that I’ve done so many times in the past while beating myself up trying to figure out which one I like more. I held the 12.9 in one hand while messing around with the Apple Pencil and within a minute it was already annoying. I know the 12.9 isn’t *that* much heavier, but it’s certainly bigger and it acts like a longer lever, so the extra weight is further exaggerated. Anyway, I one-handed it for a good few minutes, it was getting annoying. I then picked up the 11 and one-handed it - IMMEDIATELY it felt so much better, I could one-hand it all day long without any problems.

It was then that I was okay with my decision, I was happy that I had originally went with the 11. I could now be content with my decision.

Then I went home, kicked my feet up, sat back with my iPad and starting thinking “dang, that 12.9 screen really is nice… maybe I should have gone with that…”

Yeah, I hear you… baffling decision to get rid of the split keyboard (and just on the Pros for some reason!). But I thumb-type pretty easily on the 11… a little bit of a stretch to reach the middle keys, but far easier than how it was on the 12.9.

Also if using the 11” MKB it’s too small v the 12.9 version, knuckles hit the iPad using the no row.

Rubbish, not everyone needs a laptop. We have both 11” and 12”.
Exactly. There is no way I could give up my 12.9 for a laptop because its primary work function is for writing on an online whiteboard, and while I can get on with my 11, the 12.9 is much nicer. I have to set up elaborate logic problems for my students and then get them through five or six questions that follow it. I need a lot of space!
