What's the alternative? Are they just going to replace it with a cheaper watered-down 14 inch? I hope not.

13" MacBook Pro with M2 - Why?

No alternative. The 13" MBP is already a great seller for Apple. They made a point in stating so during the keynote. I don't see them killing it given the sales numbers. More likely they'll possibly update the chassis with the M3.
