I sorta doubt it... weren't they saying after the realease of the 17" that "the macbook pro family is now complete" or something?

Maybe I'm completely wrong but that's my thought on it.

Unfortunetly, Apple, in it's stupidity, decided to stop selling the one laptop that sold 20 units for every 1 17" laptop that sold.

Apple is confident that anyone that really wants a SMALL laptop bad enough will find the MacBook (13") well suited to satisfy their needs at a very reasonable price, so I highly highly doubt youll see a 13" mbp

Nope. Apple mixed the lines together and IMO the high-end MB is good enough. If they made a 13" MBP it would basically be the same thing in a silver case. There's no point.

It's not going to happen. There's not a big enough gap between the top of the line MacBook, and the specs for a 13" MacBook Pro. Plus, all the ads talk about the laptop line being complete. I wouldn't expect one any time soon.

The thing is; being logical about it, there really is no need for a 13 inch MBP. Or if there is a need, it's not a massive market.

I personally applaud Apple for putting the best they have into a small consumer machine. They have very cleverly managed to avoid the whole "arggghhh, the ibook is catching up to the powerbook" situation by defining clear roles for the respective units.

If you're a pro: You need a graphics card...you need a big screen - BAM! there you have it.

If you're a consumer: You need consumerish things: email, web, office etc...you don't need a graphics card - BAM! Save Loads and buy a strong machine that will outlive most XP/Vista portables in sheer longevity.

The only people who suffer are gamers. My answer (although I love a little C & C generals) is that if you love games, buy a MBP. It really is that simple!

Why would you wanna 13" MBP? What would it be? Same processor, RAM 'n sh*t. It would be in a silvercase, have a backlit keyboard, and perhaps a 64 MB X1600. So? What would you need it for? The MB has overall nearly same performance benchmarks as MBP. BTW, they won't, proven here. "Meet the family, now complete".

Like a small MacBook pro then? Wouldn't all us MacBook Pro owners be kinder annoyed that we just spent £1500 and up on a laptop when you can get virtually the same thing for £750, but smaller?

well

if there was a 13.3 inch MBP with a better video card than the current MB, and a case that does not stain after two weeks, i would have probably purchased one. instead i went with the 2.16 15 inch MBP with 256 ATi x1600, 2 GIG RAM and the 100 GIG 7200.

I like the MBP case much, much better.

As long as there is no macbook with a dedicated graphics card I don't think the MacBook replaced the 12" PB.

They should make a 13" MBP as the 12" PB should always have been, a decent graphics card with dual link out, a 7200rpm drive, dual layer superdrive, no border around the border of the screen, i.e. like the 15" and 17" mbps, backlit keyboard.

I'd buy that in a heartbeat!

Not at all - There are other "features" that differentiate the two product lines. I won’t buy an MBP simply because it’s too big - I want a smallish laptop that just slides into my backpack with enough power to run Final Cut on an external monitor when I’m editing. Arguably the MacBook does this, but it’s not ideal with its integrated graphics. So if I want a Mac laptop, sorry "notebook", either way I go, I won’t be 100% happy with the product, which is a shame. Torn.

Buying a MacBook in early September... *crosses fingers* Come on Apple, give me my GPU!

The "Family now complete" thing makes me think there won't be one, but that makes me sad. I have a 12" Powerbook and I love it. I bought my fiancee a 13" MacBook and even though I can see it's faster than my computer in every way, I still prefer this.

Why? I think it comes down to the smaller form factor, the lower weight and the keyboard. I absolutely love this keyboard.

I would love a MacBook Pro at 13" - or even smaller.

Maybe you see more of them "around the palce" because the 12-inch is more portable... hmmm? If you have a 17-incher, you probably wont want to bring it to class and Starbucks every day.

Obviously - But that’s my experience. Can you say honestly you know more people with 17 than 12?

20x sounds hard to believe, but I think it's widely believed that the 12" was the largest seller in the family. I don't know about the iBook, although I see predominantly 12" ones.... But then again a 12" iBook could be a G3 or a G4, right, whereas a 14" one is only a G4?

I want to believe you, I find it hard, but I will.

Even if I am wrong, hasn’t Apple always "prided" its self in education and made up a large proportion of its market share and profit.

If students want a 13" MBP, we should get :p Apple should makes computers its customers want, not what it thinks we want. Many of us have demanding graphic needs, and crave portability. It’s not a crime to want a product to suit both, nor should we feel guilty about being annoyed Apple aren’t providing – Apple is not a charity.

Forgive me; I wasn’t suggesting 20x was an accurate figure. I was implying that I feel the 12" model is more popular.

lol told him.

I personally believe that they will not bring in a 13" mbp because of the complete family thing, and because the macbook and pro are now even closer together specs wise.

I do however wish that they would lol ;) That would be the end to all my decisions (macbook or pro... ) You see i need to carry a smallish notebook around all day and use it on a limited space (school u see ;) ) but i need the power to edit photos, play the occasional, but high powered, game (cough - quake 4) and handle alot of data for school, photos and music. So, what i really need is a smaller Pro.

Shame it wont happen...:( so i will probably have to just cope with the extra size and slight exess in weight for the pro... :)

Batman. :D

Exactly! Give us our 13" Pro!

Everyone mentions the integrated graphics has the back breaker, but there are very few instances where the IG really cripples the performance of the MB. Benchmarks show that the graphics hardware makes ZERO difference when it comes to FCP.

http://creativemac.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=43717

Even with 3D apps where you'd expect the discrete graphics to give you a big boost, the advantage is minimal.

http://creativemac.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45392#

Remember that the 12" PowerBook never had the best graphics hardware either. It lagged behind the 15" and 17" PowerBooks and was only marginally better than the 12" iBooks.

I agree that the PowerBooks were nicer, with the aluminum finish, backlit keyboard, etc. But as far as performance and functionality is concerned, I just don't see how a pro 13" would really differentiate itself from the cheaper consumer version.

Now, since we have 17", 15", and 13" laptops, I wouldn't mind seeing a 11" subnote. The MacBooks are an improvement over the iBooks in almost every way except for the larger form factor. Seeing how packed in the insides are, Apple probably didn't have much of a choice. But I'd like to see Apple introduce a 11" subnote (with a 1028 x 768 display) that maybe takes out the optical drive and uses a smaller battery to get at the smaller form factor. Give it an aluminum finish and market it to the Road Warriors as the ultimate complement to your desktops, as opposed to a desktop replacement which the MacBooks basically are.

I certainly see way more 12" PBs than their bigger brethren, even the 15" PBs and that's had a longer life than the 12"ers.

I don't know anyone in RL who would even consider a 17" MBP. Some like the idea of getting a 15" MBP but of those half only say that because there isn't a smaller MBP and the 15 will have to do.
Its the integrated graphics and the cheaper build that put most people I know off the MacBooks. The girls love them but the guys want to play games. I mean they want to play current games at decent framerates and they want to be able to play next year's games. The MB may be ok for the occasional non FPS dependant game such as WoW but anything more and it can't keep up. By 'cheaper build' above I don't mean that they're actually built with cheap stuff, I mean that they feel cheaper. The keyboard feels cheap (I'm not talking about how good or not good it is, I'm talking about how it feels) and there's just too much plastic around the place. The MBPs have a very thin border around the lcd panel whereas the MBs have quite a thick border, just like cheap widescreen Dell laptops with smaller screens built into chassis that can take larger ones.
Also I know a good number of people that would simply prefer it in aluminium. They're fashion conscious students and the alu look is simply way more bling. Funnily enough I don't know a single person that's liked a black MB in the flesh. They all thought it reminded them of a cheap old computer from back in the day. :S
