Unfortunetly, Apple, in it's stupidity, decided to stop selling the one laptop that sold 20 units for every 1 17" laptop that sold.

Nah, they did the sums, they realise that switching to plastic will yield them more profit$ out of these said 20.

I personally thought the 12" PowerBooks were adorable. If I was a college student looking for the right small laptop and the MacBook Pro was 13" I would buy it because of the looks and the case. With my old PowerBook I was not half as afraid I am to hurt this MacBook.

, I wouldn't mind seeing a 11" subnote.

I love my 12"PB for the size and sweet keyboard. I also have a 12" ibook and while it's certainly a fine computer it's bulkier than the 12"PB.
Both are a little bulkier than I'd prefer. I carry the PB around a lot.
I think there's a market for a 10-11" sub-notebook.
A friend of mine has a Nokia 9300i cell phone that essentially a subnote but it's too small and the keyboard tiny. Very slick unit none the less.
I think some kind of Ipod/subnote/cellphone might be on the horizon.

I love my MacBook, but it's nearly as big as the old 15" TiBook! Besides that, the notebook line is perfect...

It's not going to happen. There's not a big enough gap between the top of the line MacBook, and the specs for a 13" MacBook Pro. Plus, all the ads talk about the laptop line being complete. I wouldn't expect one any time soon.

True, there isn't room to differentiate between an MB and a MBP at 13". Yet.

When Merom comes out, as well as the new Intel integrated graphics (GMA 965, I think it's called), there will be plenty of room.

It's anyone's guess as to whether it would happen, but if it was my call, on the day that Merom ships (and Yonah's price drops), we'd see this line-up

15" and 17" MBPs get the Merom.
13" MacBooks don't, but drop $100 in price.
new 13" MBP with Merom and higher end graphics (still integrated, though).

Apple chose not to throw the lowest Yonahs into the MB, and that's probably good. But once Intel brings out the next gen, there will be plenty of room to differentiate 13" MB and MBPs.

(Actually, MBs wouldn't drop price under any scenario before the college free iPod deal ends in September).

Funnily enough I don't know a single person that's liked a black MB in the flesh. They all thought it reminded them of a cheap old computer from back in the day. :S

I know quite a few who do like the black MB. I myself would have opted for one but...read my sig. :)

I observed a few at the local Apple store. They definitely didn't look cheap or old. How many old lappies do you see that are so small in length X width X height? Or is it the color? I dunno, but I can't remember the last time I saw a modern BLACK thin 13" notebook, especially from Apple.

Maybe more threads like this will show Apple that people really want a 13" MBP. I love my 12" Powerbook and I'm very sad that it won't be updated like the rest of them were. It's great because I can plug it into a monitor while at home and have a decent sized computer, and also have an ultra portable laptop for when I travel. Sure the Macbook is a good machine, but the truth is I don't want a plastic computer. Although the chances aren't great, I'm hoping that someday Apple will change their mind and bring back the laptop for people that need professional level computing power in a smaller form factor.

arent all the new mac laptops one inch thick?
Nope, they are both over one inch thick:
MacBook -> Height: 1.08 inches (2.75 cm)
MacBook Pro -> Height: 1.02 inches (2.59 cm)

1.0 inch = 2.54 cm. :p

Sony Vaio S Series, now that was a damn sexy machine, also with a 13.3" and now there is the even more sexy SZ Series. So there you have it, thin, wide and black. I love those Vaios...

Anyway, im not slating Mac, they beat Vaio in almost every respect. But we do need a smaller MBP, im not saying that a 11" subnotebook wouln't be great but, what i am after requires a smaller that 15.4" screen like a 13.3" but without the MAHOOSIVE border which is pants :( Know waht im talking bout...;)

Finally I have arrived.....
I just wish MB at least sport the PC card slot as that would increase the expandability (such as WAN card). I also like how Apple designed the upgradability for Ram and Hard Drive for MB as it seems it is very easy to do so almost by anyone with normal intelligence.

By the way, I saw the white pull strip when you pull out the OEM hard drive from MB. When you install the new hard drive, how do you attach that white strip? Is it attached to the OEM hard drive with glue? Is so, how do you take care of that part? I think if you just push in the new HD, it may be difficult to pull it out with that pull strip.

How can you possibly say that?

Do some searching and you will find the very same being said about Apple moving to Intel processors or using Integrated Graphics.

There are few occasions when the word "never" can be used when predicting the future - Especially with technology. If there is a market, and there clearly is (Hello Apple?!?), then they would be pretty stupid not to fill it.

Everyone mentions the integrated graphics has the back breaker, but there are very few instances where the IG really cripples the performance of the MB. Benchmarks show that the graphics hardware makes ZERO difference when it comes to FCP.
Very few instances? Maybe, but actually they are important ones, like when the UI on my old iBook is smoother than the one on a 2 month old MacBook (Dashboard, Exposé, etc), and when the GMA offloads all the work it's supposed to do to the CPU.

The reason why the Macbook is on par with the Macbook Pro in terms of rendering speed despite the integrated graphics, is simply because those applications are not designed to use the GPU for rendering. Any task that requires full GPU acceleration will the Macbook lag behind miserably.

dongmin said:
Remember that the 12" PowerBook never had the best graphics hardware either. It lagged behind the 15" and 17" PowerBooks and was only marginally better than the 12" iBooks.
Actually, no, the last iBook had a better GPU than the 12" Powerbook.

Anyhow, I personally expect Apple to release a small Macbook Pro, even though they said "The Family, Now Complete". But we're talking about the same company that said: "Don't expect a video capable iPod anytime soon", and "We're not going Intel", and so forth :)

(I know all my post is purely subjective, with no tangible proof for my claims. But I'm quite sure of everything I said :p )

Who says a new child cannot be born?

I would really, really, really love to own a small 13" MacBook Pro. I went to the Apple store last night and I had the mindset of wanting to purchase a black MacBook. After looking at them for a good 15 minutes, I decided I just can't pull myself away from the sexy design of the PowerBook/MacBook Pro. The MacBook just looks cheap compared to a MacBook Pro. Sorry to say it but it really does. I've owned 4 PowerBooks during my Mac days and each one has totally womped all over the iBooks.

In the end, I may just end up purchasing another 12" PowerBook if I can find one at a closeout price. The current 12" I have was taken from me by my adorable girlfriend. :(

it would be nice.... it may be 13" or smaller and it may run hot as a pizza oven, but it would be nice. Apple doesn't have the chips to differentiate adequately at this point but you neever know, with Merom around the corner they will have the ability.....

I think it's unlikely that Apple will step into another 12" ibook/powerbook situation again and produce a 13" macbook pro.

I do think that they might end up producing a 11.1" ws macbook pro at some point. I think there is definitely a market for it.

I'm currently looking for a replacement for my 12" pbook but the black macbook isn't quite there for me (close but not quite and the price premium for the same spec as white is a little silly).
