Micro scratches is the risk I take by going naked, I am ok with that, Its a completely different experience using the phone naked vs changing it appearance and texture. Apple now offers unlimited occurrences, I can change the screen when the scratches become an issue.

I really like the naken feel of the screen oppose to the glass on the screen protector.

What’s the difference from your perspective? It’s not something I’ve ever been able to tell myself. My fingertips aren’t too sensitive to force changes in the friction coefficient of such slippery surfaces lol. It’s got to be fractions of a milligram.

At what point does Apple draw the line in deciding whether or not they are responsible for screen replacement?
Is one "microscratch" enough? Two "microscratches"?
A deep scratch?
A gouge?
A shattered screen?
They must have limitations somewhere, or do they just replace the screen upon the customers request regardless of how minor the damage is, or how it occurred?
Anything goes?

I already had a screen protector and Apple case ready when I received my iPhone. As soon as I removed the protective paper from the screen the protector went on immediately.

I have no doubt that the OP's wife was not careless. However, I know from experience how easily sharp objects come into contact with the screen. Zippers, jean rivets, metal watch bands, and other metal electronics on your desk are all possible ways your screen can be scratched even without a noticeable collision or noise.

The change in policy to unlimited is due to the huge profit margins for Apple, So yes anything goes.

I'd like to see one single valid argument for not having a screen protector.
They're inexpensive, replaceable, protective, only unattractive if installed crooked or with debris beneath them (not the fault of the product).
So what's the problem?

So on that basis, in effect, we ALL get to pay for it!

A screen protector is is the first thing that goes on my phone right after I peel the white plastic covering the screen off. The next thing that goes on the phone is a case. This is a $1000+ electronic device that can be destroyed by dropping it. I don’t see a reason not to protect it. I guess if you’re just made of money or super careful but I’m neither 😂

No unlimited doesn’t mean anything goes. It means unlimited amount of repairs that meet the qualifications for repair. You can’t just go in and say oh no my phone is scratched. I need a new one!

This being said, if you’re dishonest there’s nothing stopping you from smashing it with a hammer and then taking it into the store

I don't like damage at all, so I like to prevent it as much as is reasonably possible.
Even were I to have Applecare+, it's 125 miles to the nearest Apple Store for a repair, and then I would be concerned that the "repairer" wouldn't do a proper job of it, leaving no damage behind, and properly sealing the phone.
Better to avoid all of that!:D

Not sure about since the change, but I've heard on even deeper scratches that they wouldn't do an AC+ Claim. I think the rule should be if it would fail as a trade-in, it should be repaired under AC+ if the customer has it.

It’s about 60 miles from where I live to the nearest Apple store. Of course that’s 120 miles round-trip. In the USA we have Best Buy that is supposed to be able to do the same repairs but I’m not at all confident with them. I’ve been to Best Buy and no offense to anyone that works there but I wouldn’t trust them with my phone. Some of those guys are nice but others act like they don’t even want to help you. I know when I go into the Apple Store I’m going to get some of that courteous and professional.

This is one reason I’m so glad I have an iPhone instead of an android phone. I just had a friend that got his phone repaired with a cracked screen. The aggravation he had to go through to get that done was insane. I’ve had two screen replacements done at the Apple store, and the experience was very pleasant.

I was not aware of any such policy, I have had my screen replaced with Micro scratches, no questions asked and this was before the unlimited occurrence policy. There are no qualification criteria for repairs, unless you can site or post to the contrary.

Best Buy is an authorized repair center, about an hour wait and your done.

Not sure why anybody would not put a screen protector on immediately? It’s not worth the risk when a grain of sand in your pocket or a rivet on a pair of jeans can do the damage so easily.
I never use screen protectors. I take very good care and have never had any of my iPhones scratched. Even the original.

Nah it takes a grain of sand and something else to grind into the screen
True, but that could just be grabbing it with the screen down against a car seat and the motion of dragging it. Most of the time when people pick up something they’re not super careful, touching the sides and lifting up gently. They grab it, put a little bit of downward pressure and then pick it up.

What’s even more fun is car keys in the same pocket as the phone 😂😂😂

I’ve run a case on only one of my phones. Not worth it. I hate the feeling of the case and the devices are on a 2-4 year upgrade cycle anyway.
I think it’s much easier to make an argument against a case than a screen protector.

I’m just the opposite. I don’t like the feeling of the naked phone. I feel like it’s slippery and I’m going to drop it. The cases I buy have a good grip. Of course this is my personal opinion and everyone is different with what they like. I can completely understand someone not wanting to use a case.

I'm pretty careful (rarely drop my phone, and keep it in a pocket where I never put anything else), and in my 12 years of using glass smartphone screens without screen protectors (6 of those years without a case either), I've only ever gotten a noticeable scratch once (on my iPhone X, from the metal corner of my iPad cover), and it was only noticeable with the screen off or in really bright lighting. That said, I keep my phones a lot longer now (3 years) than I used to (3-6 months lol), so for my 14 Pro Max, I decided to use a screen protector for the first time. Actually, I started 3 months ago with my 12 Pro Max because I was going to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and was worried I would scratch my screen there, and I noticed so little difference that I kept it on until my 14 Pro Max, even though I had intended to take it off after the climb.

TLDR: It's very possible to use a phone without a screen protector and never get a scratch, but, if you have a screen protector, you don't have to be as careful and you also have nice peace of mind.

You're done IF they do it right.
Some are better than others, and it's tough for me to trust any of them.
I'd MUCH prefer to avoid all of it, and it's a simple & inexpensive matter to do so.
Even the Apple Store can screw up.

Don’t put your phone screen down and don’t put it in a pocket with keys in it.

Yes I’ve done both in the past. I don’t any more.
