I took my IPhone 12 Pro in because the day I received it I dropped it and nicked the bezel just a little. It wasn't real noticeable but you could see it. I had Applecare+ and I was told that they would not replace it. This was just my experience...yours may be different. Hopefully it is..

I think people are falling into the rabbit hole of; ‘I do it this way, so it’s applicable to everybody’. At the end of the day I doubt any of us really care if some stranger on the internet scratches their iPhone screen or smashes the front or back glass. We aren’t paying for it at the end of the day. We just do what we need to do with our devices and it’s entirely subjective.

I don’t want to be worrying about what surfaces I put my phone down on or the damage when I drop my phone onto a hard floor which happens weekly. Or going through bizarre rituals of wiping down the iPhone with microfibre cloths and banning my kids from touching my phone. That works for others and that’s fantastic, but I’m happy with a case and screen protector. I don’t like the feel of an iPhone without a case and a screen protector feels exactly the same as the glass it sits on in my experience. It’s worth the small expense to avoid a huge one for me. Others seem to like a naked iPhone and have decades of experience not scratching their iPhones and that’s fabulous . One size doesn’t fit all.

What’s the difference from your perspective? It’s not something I’ve ever been able to tell myself. My fingertips aren’t too sensitive to force changes in the friction coefficient of such slippery surfaces lol. It’s got to be fractions of a milligram.
I just like the bare feel of the screen. I don't like screen protectors because it eventually creates a border scratch on the glass if you take it off (I do notice that with dust attractions and you try to clean). I also don't like the border feel of it when you run your finger through. So that's just a bit of annoyance I have with the screen protector. But of course to each their own. I'll never use screen proctector as I like the bare feel of it. Plus, with 12, 13 and now 14, no scratches whatsoever.

That “oleophobic “ coating wears down pretty fast.

I’ve used screen protectors on every phone I’ve owned. No “border scratches” ever. Same with “border feel”. They go just about right to the edge.

You must be using poor fitting or poorly installed screen protectors. You won’t even notice a high quality and properly installed protector is there.

That would make a good death metal band name 😆

I wonder why Apple stopped offering those $20 matte belkin screen films as opposed to $40 glass ones? Matte was really cool looking, light and even easier to slide your finger on the screen vs bare.
Those are the ones I use. I currently have one on my 13 Pro (and had it installed at the Apple store). I guess Belkin didn't manufacture it for the 14 line (on Apples's website it for the 13 series & below)

So I'm going to to go for the Belkin glass protector for my 14 Pro, but I really liked the matte version.

Always used screen protectors since my iPhone 3G days, but never a case. I’ve used cases on other devices before, but on my own phone that goes into my pocket every day, it never felt right

Not sure why anybody would not put a screen protector on immediately? It’s not worth the risk when a grain of sand in your pocket or a rivet on a pair of jeans can do the damage so easily.
A dozen years of using screen based phones here. Never once did I use a screen protector. Never once did I consider it. And you guessed it, I’ve never had any scratches.

It’s easy. Empty pocket, insert phone.

My iPhone is in a Caudabe sheath case so the edge of the screen protector can’t be seen. Your method works for you though

That’s definitely a first in the 26 years I’ve participated on internet forums, a creepy anonymous video addressing me like this is some kind of ransom deal to get my iPhone back. I couldn’t care less whether you use a screen protector or not mate, I really couldn’t.
What was supposed to be entertaining and humorous became a hostage situation perpetrated by a creepy villainous character dreamed up by your paranoia.

That's definitely a bizarre ritual.
I dunno why he made a video if it. Just makes it sound even worse.

When switching from the SE (2016) to the iPhone mini, I noticed that the display glass had become much more prone to micro scratches. The feel of the glass surface is also very different between the two. My guess is that with Ceramic Shield, Apple is prioritizing crack resistance over scratch resistance. The harder the material, the less it scratches, but the more prone it is to cracking under shock, and vice versa. It is a trade-off. I’m not saying that this is the cause of the OP’s problem, just an observation.

I’ve never used a screen protector. I don’t ever remember seeing any scratches on my screen. Honestly I thought screen protectors were a thing of the past. I clearly need to get out more.

I was not aware of any such policy, I have had my screen replaced with Micro scratches, no questions asked and this was before the unlimited occurrence policy. There are no qualification criteria for repairs, unless you can site or post to the contrary.

Best Buy is an authorized repair center, about an hour wait and your done.
I’ve seen people post complaining that Apple wouldn’t cover cosmetic damage but I don’t have first hand knowledge because I never tried to get a repair for cosmetic damage.

This is interesting though. I wonder if the person at the store gave them the wrong information? Maybe the policy has changed or it was just some confusion between the Apple store employee and customer?

Edit: I did a quick search and found this. Perhaps the store representative can wave this though.

Apple will not provide Hardware Services or ADH Services in the following circumstances:
(a) To protect against normal wear and tear, or to repair cosmetic damage not affecting the functionality of the Covered Equipment
