My 15 Pro Max heats up considerably without even taking a single picture. The other night I opened the camera app, sat it down on my desk and walked away for about 10 minutes and when I came back the entire backside and side rails were really warm. Not burn danger warm but warm enough to be of concern. It may be worth noting that I’m running iOS 17.1 and my device wasn’t in a case at the time. I closed the camera app and it cooled back down. I force quit all background apps, restarted the phone, opened the camera app and again, major heat up within 5 minutes. I wiped the phone and did a clean restore which didn’t help, the phone continues to heat up every time the camera app is open and at one point it got warm enough that my brother said the room smelled like burnt electronics when he walked in.

I don’t know what to think at this point, these phones aren’t cheap and the main reason I chose the Pro Max was for the camera system. I’ve owned a lot of iPhones over the years and never had this problem. It’s weird that it only happens with the camera app, I’m on my phone a lot, sometimes hours at a time consuming media, playing games, etc and the phone feels as cool as it would if it was powered off. The Apple Store is not close and based on past experiences at the “Genius Bar” I would hate to make the trek and jump through the hoops just to be told it’s normal and send me on my way without any resolution.

That happened to me with the 15 PRO. When I opened the camera, even if I didn't take photos, in 2 or 3 minutes it was already hot. It didn't happen to me with the other Apps. In my case I returned it

try to take like 100photos at 24mp with 1-2s between them and let us know.

why would I do that? Very few would do that or ever need to do that! If that is what you are doing to overheat your phone, I can’t blame the phone. Some expect way more that what the phone was designed for. That would required a lot of processing power and that makes heat, a lot of heat. It is about physics. LOL!

I don’t use it like this, as I mentioned in the beginning, I open camera app and take some photos, as in I use my camera normally, and within 2 minutes it starts getting noticeably hot. Very normal usage, not trying to do anything extra. And if I wanted to do more, it still shouldn’t be overheating, apple literally just advertised that they shot an entire keynote with one of these, so we should be able to expect it to perform without getting excessively hot, dimming the screen to the point you can’t even see anything and rapidly draining the battery. It’s not okay and needs to be addressed by apple. “LOL!” ?

It might be time to take it to the Apple Store. If it is getting hot then it has to be using a good bit of battery while doing it. Let Apple run a diagnostics on it and see what they say. Let us know here.

It’s probably heading in that direction… for me, the issue immediately presented after iOS 17.1, so before making the trip to Apple, I’m going to see if 17.1.1 gets the camera app under control again.

Lol, yesterday while waiting for camera replacement on my 15 Pro Max, I saw someone who was getting his iPhone 15 checked for heating issues.

The genius bar executive's contention was "Did it give any warning that phone is hot, the iPhone 15 owner said NO. Genius bar executive quipped, then how do you know it's getting hot?" The owner said because its hot (In fact it was, I also held it briefly).

Then the Genius Bar executive explained... it has sophisticated circuitry, and sensors, it knows when its hot,..... and blah blah....

That gentleman walked away satisfied, but a bit confused.

Ridiculous. The sensors will go off when it is too hot operate and you are unable to use it until it cools down, that does not mean it’s not running hotter than expected under normal use and excessively draining the battery. That’s just being arrogant and hiding behind excuses, seems support is declining.

Did the camera replacement help?

My original 15 PM was replaced with new phone due to aggressive brightness dimming outdoors.

The snaps on replacement 15 PM, telephoto camera were having a grey blotch on all the images. Genius bar was forced to do a Camera replacement.

How did you assess your camera for this problem? I've heard iPhones since the 13PM has been having these random issues with grey blotches on the cameras.

Hi Guys, Sorry for the Long story...

Had a unique exchange with Apple advisors. My 15PM is 1 month old now, so I've missed the boat for a direct 1-1 return / exchange. But after the 17.1 and 17.1.1 updates, I've noticed my phone EXCESSIVELY hot after using the camera app for just 1 minute. So hot that I wouldn't trust handing the phone off to my 5-year-old to take photos (Which she loves to do!) because I'm worried the phone could potentially hurt her, or surprise her enough for her to drop it.

I S/T an Apple advisor over the phone - and it took a lot of convincing, but she eventually agreed to send out a replacement (I just don't have the time to make recurrent trips to the Apple Store), but she wanted me to pay a small call-out fee. I asked to S/T her manager to finalise details thinking I could waive off this fee or something, and the manager then said he couldn't do a replacement after all, and wasn't sure why the advisor agreed to it! I just couldn't believe one customer rep could renege on a deal already offered by another customer rep. What kind of customer service is this...??? It's so unprofessional. I mean I paid more than a grand for this phone and no one at Apple seems to know what they're doing...

It's SO, SO frustrating. Anyways, the conversation ended with me having to return to an Apple Store to have it 'checked' formally, with no promises of an exchange. This is something I loathe doing, because I know what they're like and I am sure they'll most certainly say some BS along the lines of "iPhones get hot cos they're awesome", or something ridiculous like that, but I do feel this phone heating up problem is REAL. I've used iPhones for almost a decade and I've never EVER had such issues before. I hesitate taking a photo using my iPhone and prefer to use my wife's phone for this reason. I mean... I paid a grand for this phone and I have these doubts... It was so hot once after taking just a few Potrait photos that my thigh burnt up and I had to remove the phone from my pocket to place it in front of a fan for a few mins to cool it down.

I'm just hoping a swap to a new phone fixes it. Maybe they've sorted out some manufacturing flaw. But I'm travelling in just 2 weeks, so I hope this can be done within the next 2 weeks. What can I say to convince Apple?

Could you please give me some feedback / pointers here? Am I being unreasonable? I mean I've been an avid fan of Apple products. I have an iPhone, iMac and MBP. They're usually all great devices. But this iPhone situation has me a bit worried that Apple's reliability here is taking a turn for the worst.

OMG I Have this EXACT same experience!! I thought I was going crazy by being the only person with this issue! It's only 4 portrait photos before my phone starts burning up like crazy. Like excessively hot for just 4 quick photos!!

Take pictures of clear sky with all the lenses one by one. Carefully examine the snaps.
Thanks! Do you need to put the screen settings or camera settings on max brightness or anything like that? Or zoom in to find the blotch?

Select native 0.5x, 1x and 5x levels to take three snaps of clear sky. Avoid taking snaps facing the sun. No other setting needs to be changed.

Unfortunately I experienced this exact same thing from Applecare regarding a different circumstance. And like you, I was shocked as well, never known Apple to not stand by a previously set expectation before. I guess this is how it’s going to be, a lower level customer support experience going forward. :/
I’m a huge Apple fan and buy just about everything they release, I guess if there’s a silver lining on this iPhone 15 pro max/applecare experience, it is that I am going to save money, because I wouldn’t dare buy the ridiculously priced Vision Pro now. I cannot even imagine how badly they might screw that up, and especially with the new company over customer mentality they have regarding product support, no thanks, I’m good.

Interestingly, if I switch off Location access to the camera, it's not even warm. There's definitely something going on here with regards to software. My 2 cents....

Wow very glad I found this thread.

I have been using a Pixel 6a since February, but after passing my work exams I decide to treat myself to a 15 Pro.

When it arrived I loaded on my usual apps, but when playing around with the camera I noticed that the animation in landscape mode was really jerky. Then I realised the camera app buttons were unresponsive until you flipped the phone into portrait mode again. Then, I noticed the phone get quite hot.

I called Apple and arranged a replacement, which arrived today. Exact same issues as the old handset.

Both phones were wiped and restored and were both running 17.1.1 and then 17.2. No change.

I must admit that this whole experience has put me off Apple. I only bought the £300 Pixel 6a as a stop gap after my iPhone SE smashed. If a £300 phone is giving me a more reliable service than an £1100 phone I have to question whether I should just keep the Pixel?

Maybe best to keep the Pixel if you are not having any joy with the iPhone.
