You're the one who sounds pissy . I'm just pointing out a missed opportunity. Not losing any sleep over it.
it's funny how i levy a general criticism and someone takes such offense that they believe themselves to be the subject of my statement

what's wrong with you? jfc

The rumours were that they will implement Sony IMX 903 1" sensor into Pro/Pro Max, but instead they used IMX 803. I really cannot understand that, why they're not using latest sensor?

Because they want more profit. They have no competition in high end phone market. Samsung profit has dropped like 99%, Pixel is not a big deal at all just very small market share. You can expect Apple uses very similar camera sensor in next 3 to 4 years.

That is so true. :D

But China. Apple sells lots of phones in China, and there is a lot of competition from Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo. Apple has to continue to move the iPhone forward or they will lose lucrative market share and cachet there.

But the Chinese government can easily push deals and promote those brands over Apple, isn't that way Apple is trying to target the Indian market instead

It seems that they have competition, but they don't. Trust me, I was looking for Sony Xperia Pro-I and Xiaomi 12s Ultra both with IMX 903, but they cannot achieve the same picture quality, dynamic range, details, etc as iPhone 14 Pro Max even... Yes, the phone is not only camera, but I'm a photographer and aside my Nikon D810 I want to have pocket camera. Other than that, my Android experience was always awful. From the Android phones, my Sony Android TV, Nvidia Shield Pro. Same goes to Microsoft and Windows.

Huawei cannot make any high-end phone anymore and no Android system, its latest flagship is like 3 years old tech with a iPhone Pro price, only China lover would buy it with China passion. Vivo, and Oppo are more for middle level phone. Apple uses iPhone 13 (which is still in Apple store with discount) and SE to fight for that market share.

Different brands share the market pretty equally now. Even though the market share is not big for Apple, but I am pretty sure Apple wins almost 100% for high-end market. Almost every ok rich Chinese uses iPhone. It is almost impossible for Apple to fight in low-end market like RedMi phone is like $100 to $200, Apple would never make a phone for this price range. Apple should earn more in 1 pro phone than Xiaomi earns in 20 low-end phone.

Everything between 1x and 5x is realized by cropping the main sensor.
Then I need to take back my statements from above. If I would be a potential buyer I would first wait to see how good or bad the photos are with the zoom between 2x to 5x.

The level of details won't be the same of course. You cannot have the same level of details between 48 to 12Mpix.

It’s even worse because you don’t have the 3x optical zoom lens for the range between 2x and 5x.

And the phone should just use main sensor and chop for you even you choose 5x but not having perfect enough of light

Stagemanager tactics all over again. Same S with the 12/13 back then improvements of cameras only made available to newest models.

cheers. Sold my camera for the 15pro (and the 1" sensor), but looks like it will be a 15 pro max buy and then again next year if we get the 1" sensor. hey ho...

You do realise even the 14 Pro (1/1.28) had a sensor not that much smaller than a 1 inch type sensor? Any bigger and you start going into pointless territory without making the glass in front of it larger.

Here are the hard facts after doing some research:

  • The main 1x camera on both new Pro models is exactly the same as on the 14 Pro / Pro Max. No new sensor, no new glass.
  • The ultra wide 0,5x camera on both new Pro models is also exactly the same as on the 14 Pro / Pro Max. No new sensor, no new glass.
  • The 3x tele camera on the 15 Pro is exactly the same as on the 14 Pro / Pro Max, which was already exactly the same as on the 13 Pro / Pro Max. Again, no new sensor, no new glass.
  • The 5x tele camera on the 15 Pro Max is indeed brand new. Sadly, it replaces the 3x camera instead of being added. So on the Pro Max, you now have native optical focal lengths of 13 mm, 24 mm and 120 mm. For my personal use cases, this is actually worse than the native optical focal lengths trio of the regular Pro at 13 mm, 24 mm and 77 mm. The gap between 24 and 120 is huge and for me 77 is a more frequently usable focal length than 120.
All other photography-related improvements mentioned in the keynote are indeed software based. Will they come to the 14 Pro models as well? Probably not.

Long story short, from a hardware camera / photography point of view, the only real reason to get a 15 model is if you know you‘ll use the 120 mm tele lens from the Pro Max a lot.

Edit: If you want to call this a „hardware improvement“, there is apparently a new nanoscale coating on the wide-angle lens to reduce lens flare. Better than nothing, I guess.
Nonsense. All the parts of a camera work together to facilitate captures, so claiming "cameras are really disappointing" without having yet used the new iPhone 15 Pro cameras is total nonsense. Absurd even. New chip, new tele lens, etc. are obvious hardware changes, and the software, OIS, etc. are no doubt also new.

Make your "cameras are really disappointing" claims after testing the new iPhone 15 Pro Max camera. Until then this thread OP is nonsense.

What you are going to do with the newest chip? Rendering 4K videos from your GoPro on your iPhone :D

So what happens when you 'zoom' to about 77mm distance? Is it taking the main camera and cropping? The 5x zoom camera is fixed to 5x/120mm?

Truth is it is very much about the competence of the chip. We are capturing images using pissy little lenses that come as part and parcel of a flat smartphone we carry in our pockets. Those captures are totally facilitated by computational photography performed by the chip.
