I have a 15PM. I had zero issues so far with overheating no matter using CarPlay or Waze or video or audio calls. The only time this phone gets hot (like any other I had before) is when charging it in a closed space (car middle console) and heavy load, e.g. running navigation/CarPlay.

What’s interesting there is it appears regular 15 models with A16 chips are affected too. That (hopefully) points to a software bug as being the underlying cause. It at least rules out this being a A17 only problem.

I’m personally doubtful of that. Even though focus may be on Pro’s and Pro’s may be selling better the anecdotes for regular 15 and 15 plus seem really slim

I have a phone that is 15 times slower than this 15 Pro and it handles navigation perfectly, navigation is not a heavy load

Lots of people on X are talking about how 15Pro and pro max are getting so hot they can’t even be held without a case

Has that been your experience?

Seems even if not a17 pro runs hot in general

Kinda disappointing given all the 3nm hype
But I think it will be magically fixed by next gen

"lots of people"

Think about how many Iphone Pro/Pro Maxes Apple has shipped so far...now think about "lots of people".

My iPhone 15 Pro Max felt a bit warm when I was restoring from an iCloud backup, but after that it was fine. I wonder if it could be related to MagSafe charging versus cable charging or perhaps it's a regional thing. I am in the USA and am not experiencing over heating issues.

Been using my Pro Max since Friday night and it hasn't got warm. Only after taking it off the charger (Wired) but that's normal.

I posted 44 degrees yesterday, today I can update the record with MagSafe. lol.

The eSIM only versions (including US) have swapped around chips on board to make for better heat spreading. The SIM tray area on yours is a NAND chip instead.

I get that but anecdote wise not hearing many people complain about 15 or 15 plus in general

Exactly. And in the 9to5Mac article they say the 15 Plus overheated after "demanding use" like benchmarks and games. This article is also the first time I'm hearing of a regular 15/15 Plus getting uncomfortably hot.

Contrast that with the countless reports of people on social media saying their 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max phone is easily overheating. And not just after benchmarks and gaming, people are talking about their phone overheating to the extreme after doing regular stuff like using the GPS, using social media apps, charging, etc.

This year I'm in the market for a new phone. All these reports or overheating phones and disappointing battery life made me cancel my iPhone 15 Pro pre-order. I'm going with a regular iPhone 15 instead. I'll probably miss the faster USB transfer speed and 8GB or ram (the main two points why the Pro model was interesting to me – the camera on the Pro seems very nice, but honestly all the features I'll actually use frequently are already on the regular 15 model), but at least I'll have a phone that's fun to use on a regular basis and that won't burn a hole in my pocket.

The article literally has thermal imaging of a 15 regular overheating.
Yeah, both 15 Plus and Pro max testing. Around 116º F
Whatever is happening, I assume a software patch can fix this...hopefully?? For the current owners, I hope Apple can spit this out in the next week!

I still want to update to Pro Max (I want those camera upgrades) -- but nah...not right now. Maybe Nov., Dec. I can wait until these kinks are smoothed out.

You could always consider the 14pro if you’re wanting a pro model but not the current one due to its numerous issues.

I continue not to have any kind of heating problems with the 15 Pro. Is it possible that some are affected and some not?
Just wondering. Don't insult me lol

Is that the temperature of the iPhone or the charger?

If you remove the charger from in between the iPhone and your meter, which one feels warmer to the touch?
It is pointing at the phone, you can still see the faint red dot at the edge of the thermometre. The charger itself is hardly reaching 35.

If this is not software bound and can be fixed, Apple is in deep ****. 48 degree Celsius is in the ballpark of 2nd degree skin burns with contact of over 15 minutes I believe. They will face massive lawsuits if the units are not recalled.

Given not everyone is experiencing it and others are would likely mean some are affected some not. Remains to be seen whether hw, sw, or some combo afaik

Yeah, I don't think it's everything. And I'm not sure it's a continuing problem. First 2 days my 15PM got very hot frequently, and I was concerned and started looking for posts, convinced I had an issue. The last 2 days though, it hasn't gotten that hot - the only time it felt extra hot was last night when I was putting a kid to bed with music playing, my flashlight on, and playing a game. And even then, it wasn't as hot as the first 2 days... so I suspect it has more to do with initial setup than anything. But maybe not. For those first 2 days, that was about as hot as I ever remember an iPhone getting.

if the regular 15's are also affected this means we can assume that its a software issue and not a hardware one (not A17's culprit). And that would be great news!
hope this will get fixed soon.
Yes, that would be great news. I read that article, but I haven’t seen anyone here complaining about heat in the regular 15’s. Has anyone else?

I was considering going to the Plus, but I think I’ll wait to see how this sorts itself out.

Maybe, but honestly I think I'll be more than alright with the regular 15. Nearly all the features important to me are on the regular 15 model. Including the camera features that I'll actually regularly use.

I know I won't miss ProMotion. It's nice, I like it on my Macbook Pro 16-inch and my iPad Pro, very smooth motion... but my current 60Hz phone is also very smooth. I'll be alright.

Like I was saying I'll probably miss the faster USB transfer speed and 8GB of ram (two features that aren't in any prior Pro iPhone models as far as I know), but I guess these things are more in the "nice to have" category. I'm sure the regular model will be fine.
