Mine has definitely been the photo app. It’s so close to finishing (and my phone is cooler today). I have… a lot… of photos. Right now it’s paused in the “photos curated” stage which only runs when the screen is locked and connected to power. I think that’s the last step on the photos, finally.
But, the background activity on photos in my battery section has been what’s been eating up the greatest percentage of my battery (and I’m sure that’s what the heating up has been).

The heat issue is common occurrence I see every year when people start getting their phone on the 1st day. I am seeing this post like this one pop up every year since Iphone 3GS .

I’ve seen it very often also and never paid much attention to it. But I’ve never seen it this dramatic related to phone use, high heat and substantial battery drop all occurring at the same time.

Heating up now while doing some video outside on a cool day. I have a case but the screen is getting hot.

Give Apple a chance to “fix” the problem by a software modification that will cripple the performance of a $1,200 phone?

I’m sick of Apple making consumers beta testers for Gen 1 products. And, I’m even more tired of seeing these same consumers giving Apple the benefit of the doubt time after time.

My 15 Pro seems ok. No overheating detected. Also used a lot as a hotspot this morning: no problems.
Surfing the “X” I noticed that this problem does occur more frequently on the Max (also someone stated this) but it could simply be due to the fact that it sold more…
My brother has a 15 pro as well and he didn’t have problems with the exception of the first day of use

Phone got a little warm (definitely not hot or uncomfortable to hold) while syncing iCloud Photos, It actually paused for a few minutes due to heat. Been fine since then.

I’m not too worried overall, but this is an area where it seems like Apple can improve. Top notch chip, top notch materials/display, it would be nice to see them improve the cooling architecture. I wonder what the trade offs are (other than cost, of course).

If the only trade off was cost I think Apple would have improved thermal management years ago.

Perhaps to make a real dent in the heat it would take up too much space and Apple has determined the trade off isn’t worth it yet.

Do you know anything about the vapor chamber cooling

Being in a cult does have its downsides.

My 15 ProMax got a little warm while syncing then completely normal. My 13Pro would, on occasion get really warm. I never looked into it other than to shut it down for a few minutes and restart.

I think you can get a clue of the generation of the iPhone 15 from its name.
I think you you can get a clue as to the meaning and intent of my comment from the context. Waiting for the second gen of this 3 nm chip seems prudent given that this first try by Apple has compromised the phone.

But since it appears you’re incapable of recognizing nuance, let me explain slowly that I was referring to the first gen 3nm chip which (I’ve read in several articles about the technology) seems to be causing excessive heat under heavy loads.

We don't know what's causing it. For example, it could be a bug in iOS 17, where a service is running too often.

Dang, I spoke too soon. I’m finding my phone much warmer than my 12pm with my daily usage. I’m playing Spotify in the background and spending the last 15 minutes browsing reddit/internet when it’s been getting warmer. I’m even typing this while holding my phone next to a mini fan.

First the car play issues and now the warmer than usual phone, I’m kinda bummed. There’s always some snags and, personally, I haven’t experienced many in my years of iPhone ownership but experiencing some at once in the first week is a bummer lol I’ll stick it out and hope a software update can help.

Geekerwans review at the 15:50 mark

Very informative video. The A17 Pro draws a lot of power. Power = heat. And the titanium certainly isn't helping with the heat dissipation vs aluminum or stainless steel. This unfortunately results in a hotter than normal iPhone.

This is extremely concerning as someone still thinking about getting this new phone.

And even with this off and on overheating issue happening now on new owners, I'm sure this is not helping the battery health already. If there is one big enemy to any cell phone battery, it's heat!

You can always just get the normal iPhone 15 and not the Pro version? That's got the A16 chip which is the same chip as the 14 Pro models.

That is exactly what I'll do if they do not fix that within the next 10 days.

I've got all the iPhones since 2008 and this never happened. It's ok some overheating during setup (or heavy tasks) but 5 days are gone and it still get burning hot during normal calls (10 mins +) and consuming 30 % points of battery per hour 😭.
I do not consider "heavy task" a call for a phone.

My 15 Pro is for sure warmer than my 14 Pro Max. I’m not too concerned about it, as it’s still cooler than my 13 Pro Max was.

No such issues on 15PM. All phones will get warm on initial setup and for a short time thereafter as things settle in. Battery life since I received it last Friday has been outstanding. Most overheating is related to a specific app, find that app and you’ll fix the problem.

if the regular 15's are also affected this means we can assume that its a software issue and not a hardware one (not A17's culprit). And that would be great news!
hope this will get fixed soon.
